"Vítání občánků": Social Analysis of a Czech Baby-Welcoming Ceremony

Vítání občánků which translates to "Welcoming of Little Citizens" is a rite of passage celebrated by Czech parents with newborns at their local town or city council. It was invented during the Communist era with the aim of replacing baptism. A reason for its continued popularity even after the shift to democracy is its function as a rite of passage at a difficult life situation but also its successful re-invention. Transition to parenthood is difficult in contemporary society due to high societal expectations of parents as well as contradictory ideals. Rite of passage helps ease the transition for the parents, but it also involves the broader community and the newborn. In addition, it puts one's life journey into a bigger perspective and provides a platform for a family gathering and for using symbolic language. Both its invention and re-invention were done by inducing a sense of continuity via elements invoking past traditions and universal values. Thanks to that, the desired new meanings and values have been accepted by the public. A crucial role in the (re)inventing process has been played by a so-called institutional entrepreneur, an actor who has the skills, resources and motivation to achieve it. Teachers versus totalitarianism: Pedagogical faculties and their activities during the breakthrough year 1989

The thesis deals with the involvement of five pedagogical faculties in the Czech Republic in the Velvet Revolution in 1989. These are the Faculty of Education of Charles University, the Faculty of Education in České Budějovice, the Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové, the Faculty of Education in Pilsen and the Faculty of Education in Ústí nad Labem. The focus is mainly on the activities of students after the events at Národní třída on 17 November 1989, such as the announcement of a student strike, the establishment of strike committees and the beginnings of student self-government. However, attention is also paid to the atmosphere at the faculties during the 1980s and the activities in which students were involved during this period. One of the chapters is also devoted to students as important actors in our history. The historical development of higher teacher education in Czechoslovakia is not omitted. Other chapters are logically divided according to the individual faculties of education and include the historical development of the faculty, the atmosphere in the 1980s, the course of the student strike and the further direction of the faculty after the Velvet Revolution. "Katolická akce" as a tool of communist propaganda for christians in Czechoslovakia in 1949-1951

The aim of this thesis is to show the specific elements of propaganda that the communist regime used to speak to Christians in Czechoslovakia in the years 1949- 1951 using the so-called Catholic Action. This movement was a tool of the communist regime that wanted to subjugate the Catholic Church and use it for its own purposes. Catholic Action was artificially maintained for almost two years and used in the press primarily as a supposed mouthpiece for all Catholics. Eventually, it disappeared from the pages of the newspapers. This thesis describes selected elements of propaganda using specific examples from periodicals of the time. The results can help us to gain insight into the mindset of the former communist regime.

How Does Generation Z Perceive the Communist Regime in Czechoslovakia?

This bachelor's thesis examines the attitude of Generation Z towards the former communist regime. In the first section, it introduces the reader to the communist history of Czechoslovakia, followed by an overview of communism as an ideology, and also revisionism. The next section describes the methods used to collect data. Those data are then used in the third section to verify the truthfulness of the established hypotheses. These hypotheses aim to find out the attitude of Generation Z towards communism and whether the field of study at the individual's university also plays a role in their perception.

Letters from Milada Horáková - their path and media coverage following 1989

This bachelor thesis focuses on the letters from Milada Horáková, their journey from writing to getting to the hands of her family and their publication, and the associated post-1989 media coverage. The thesis thus aims to describe the different stages of the letters' path and to uncover a part of their journey not known to the public. Furthermore, it sets out to analyse the post-1989 media coverage of the letters up to the present day, using qualitative content analysis of documentary films and series that mention the last letters and were produced after 1989, and relevant national print media articles published after 1989. Along with this, it compares the description of the path of the letters in the analysed material to the one in this thesis. The introduction contains a historical context in which the topic is set, the life of Milada Horáková, and the political trial, therefore the events leading up to the writing of the letters. The following chapters cover the contents of each letter and their publication in 1990. The journey of the letters is further detailed in the thesis, along with the fact that the letters were secretly taken from the General Prosecutor's Office and safely hidden by JUDr. Lubomír Štěpán for twenty years, before their handover to the bereaved family, information not yet...

Analysis of film and television content referring to the Czech underground produced before 1989

The bachelor thesis Analysis of movie and television content referring to the Czech underground produced before 1989 focuses on the elements of communist propaganda in the nationwide campaign against the Czechoslovak underground in the 1970s. The thesis examines film and television content produced about the underground movement in the 1970s using qualitative discursive and content analysis method. In the theoretical part, I draw on literature and contemporary newspaper articles to add the historical context. I also present events that had an impact on the development of musical genres in socialist Czechoslovakia and the creation of the underground as a way of life. The next part presents a short history of the bands The Plastic People of the Universe and DG 307 and introduces the circumstances of the Kapela event of the clandestine State security. The last chapters of the theoretical part are devoted to propaganda and its use in film. In the practical part of the thesis, the film Atentát na kulturu (Assassination of Culture) and the episode Mimikry from the 30 případů majora Zemana (Thirty Cases of Major Zeman) TV series are analysed. Stated-controlled culture Czechoslovak theaters at the time of normalization Abstract This thesis gives a comprehensive picture of cultural policy during the so-called normalisation period. The aim is to present the functioning of Czechoslovak theaters under the ideological supervision of the ruling party. The first part deals with the socio-historical context and selected events that further developments. The entry of Warsaw Pact troops into Czechoslovakia forced a change in the countrys circumstances, and power and censorship were consolidated. The second part focuses directly on the description of the cultural state apparatus, the individual institutions and their activities in the given period. It deals with how the state regulated culture and what censorship regulations came into force. It directly presents, through selected theaters, the impact of change in political situation after 1968 not only on the artistic and staging direction.
