Graded Readers in Foreign Language Teaching

This diploma thesis focuses on literature and how to implement it in teaching a foreign language. The theoretical chapters discuss the teaching of Czech language and literature, reading literacy and also the teaching of a foreign languages in the Czech Republic. Moreover, they deal with the use of literary texts in teaching foreign languages, the advantages and disadvantages of authentic texts and simplified foreign language texts, as well as the possibilities of using these texts in practice. Last but not least, there is a chapter on Montessori pedagogy and its basic concepts and approaches, as well as the approach of this pedagogy to English language teaching. In the practical part, this thesis focuses on simplified foreign language literature. It deals with research of popular books in this category and their subsequent analysis, research among students, which focuses on what students like to read and how is a foreign language text in teaching perceived by an English teacher. The last point of the practical part is the processing of original story based on all information form the research.
Differentiated teaching in foreign language lessons

The aim of the Diploma thesis is to examine the concept of differentiated instruction. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part offers a closer look at the theoretical aspects related to differentiation. The attention is paid especially to general principles, process of learning, the role of the teacher, cooperative education, advantages and disadvantages of differentiation, evaluation and preparation of students and parents for the system of differentiated class. The second part focuses on the implementation of differentiating strategies into second language teaching. Based on the theoretical learning from the first part, several activities which can be used in a Spanish high school class are proposed. The thesis includes a research carried out through a questionnaire which aims to map the teacher's knowledge of differentiated instruction and its usage at Czech high schools.
The development of methods in foreign language teaching from the mid 19th century until present

This diploma thesis scrutinizes development of foreign language teaching methods as well as their conceptions and usage. The aim of this thesis is to provide a complex insight into the issue. The thesis works with a few hypotheses such as influence of age (of pupils as well as teachers) on choice of methods. Even more attention is dedicated to eclecticism and communicative methods which are believed to be predominant in today's teaching. The theoretical part is focused on explanation and clarification of methodologic terminology, all the methods and didactic approaches existing in foreign language teaching, which are presented chronologically. There are also influential psychological and linguistic movements important for development of the methods summarized. Then the research based on survey for teachers follows. This part explores which techniques, typical for particular methods, prevail in contemporary teaching. The aim of the research is to find out which methods and techniques are chosen by teachers and what factors influence their choice. The practical part functions as a sort of evidentiary test. TITLE: Teaching English and Pupils with Special Educational Needs AUTHOR: Janka Kociánová DEPARTMENT: Department of Special Education SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Lenka Felcmanová, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis deals with the teaching of English of pupils with special educational needs, focusing on pupils with specific learning disabilities (SLD). The issue of pupils with SLD and didactics of English language are described in the theoretical part. The aim of the practical part was to find out how pupils with SLD are taught English in primary schools, which forms of education, the most frequently aids (textbooks, materials, etc.) and methods are used. Quantitative as well as qualitative methods were chosen for the research - the questionnaire survey (the questionnaire for teachers), aids and analysis of materials, interviews with teachers and case studies. On the basis of the obtained data, the effectiveness of the various activities is evaluated and a list of the recommended teaching aids, materials and resources is presented. Effect of specific support from the founder on the conceptual changes in the language education in primary schools This final bachelor thesis deals with the examination of the influence of targeted support by the founder in the area of language education in primary schools on the basis of the assessment of qualitative values of education results, based on the implementation of conceptual changes in the area of language education included in the school education programmes, on the basis of enlargement of the scope of foreign-language education and on the basis of increased use of the areas of communicative approach in teaching foreign languages. This thesis follows from the basic forms of education financing, from the use of direct methods of language teaching and from the current knowledge in the area of language education. The research part is preceded by the evaluation of the initial conditions preexisting the initiation of the system support of the language education development. Characteristics of the Czech language of Russian students(with a focus on selected phonetic and morphosyntactic phenomena)

Language adaptation of foreigners is always accompanied by a number of problems connected to the acquisition and the use of the language which becomes the primary communicative tool in the new environment. Ignoring and underestimating these problems typical of a particular language community can result in a failure to master the target language and consequently in the unsuccessful integration in the new society. This thesis is aimed at specific problems in the area of morphosyntax and phonetics, characteristic of Russian-speaking students of Czech. At the same time, it warns about the danger of overestimating positive transfer from Russian and emphasizes the necessity of using special didactic approach in teaching this group of foreign-language speakers. The analysis of the chosen language phenomena is based on the data from the Database of the voice recordings of spoken Czech by native speakers of Russian and the Database of language mistakes in Czech made by speakers whose native language is another Slavic language, which were created, among others, for the purpose of this thesis.
