Gender Analysis of Christian Magazine IN! - dívčí svět

The thesis presents a qualitative gender analysis of a Christian girls' magazine "IN! - dívčí svět" and explores how femininity is constructed in the magazine and how the results of the analysis can be interpreted using feminist theology. An important starting point of the thesis is the belief in the existence of asymmetric power relations. The study of the literary-media text, thus, allows showing whether the power relations are strengthened or subverted through it. The main analytical category of this thesis is gender. In the theoretical-methodological part, the basic concepts and methods used during the analysis are presented. In the analytical part, the method of resistant reading and critical discourse analysis is used. The analytical part consists of fifteen selected texts. Finally, the collected data are summarised.
Gender roles in fairy tales

Fairy tales have an educational and socialization impact on children. In fairy tales children find answers to questions, problems and situations, that life brings them. Fairy tales reflect true life - people come into the world, fall ill, die, get poorer, steal, get jealous, love and hate to death and they are willing to lay down their life for helping others. A child feels genuineness of story, finds something what it had experienced itself. Children identify themselves with fairy tale characters and their characteristics, heroes of stories are their models. So naturally children create their hierarchy of values, because moral message of fairy tales is clear and that is its advantage for children. Fairy tales interfere in all aspects of life and education. One of the aspects is the area of gender. In my research I presented the children a traditional fairy tale and less traditional fairy tale, where male and female roles are reversed. The aim of the research was to find out how boys and girls perceive the division of roles in fairy tales. I led structured interviews with children and compared the collected data with the gathered theoretical information.
Gender and Media in the Age of Post-Modernity: Revealing Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary Czech Advertising Discourse

ENGLISH SUMMARY The main objective of this thesis was to provide a complex perspective on the mutual relationship of gender and media in the age of post-modernity with a special attention to the stereotypical gender portrayal presented to us by the contemporary Czech advertising discourse. We chose to demonstrate this problematics through the methods of semiotic analysis on the analytical sample of 5 advertisements (consisting of selected TV commercials) representing various aspects of stereotypical gender images appearing in the today's Czech advertising contents. We then subjected these selected advertisements to the analytical methods in pursuit of finding the answers to the questions related to the media image of men, women and our society that the stereotypical gender depictions contained in these advertisements help to construct. Although many of these advertisements appear to be openly sexist or even misogynic on the first sight, using the mechanisms of semiotic analysis we came to a rather opposite conclusion proposing the analyzed contents are rather pro-feminine tending toward an extensive masculine critique. Gender aspects of children's literature

The relation between literature and gender themes has been studied from the first half of twentieth century especially in America and Great Britain. At the beginning it was concern of feminism orientated activists who focused on folk tales and their influence on female identity. Later the range of scientists focused on gender became wider just as the range of themes related to gender did. From the end of last century we don't consider the theme of gender as a specific theme of feminists wanting equality of gender. There are some new topics as for example new models of family and their presentation in children's literature. As new models of family we understand living in divorced family or living with parents of the same sex. Authors of these books want to help children to deal with this new situation but they want to impress the public as well. The most important books focused on this theme were published thirty years ago in the USA and Great Britain but we still can't find this in our bookshops. This finding seems understandable with books with gay and lesbian themes, because it's not so long since the registered partnership was legalized and there are probably not many families with parents of the same gender. The fathers on parental leave in the Czech Republic

This diploma work is focused on the situation of fathers on parental leave in the Czech Republic. The aim of research is to find out how fathers feel on their parental leave, what is positive or negative for them and how they evaluate this experience. The theoretical part describes the legislative framework of parental leave and parental allowance and explains the concepts such as femininity, masculinity, maternity and paternity. Then I deal with gender stereotypes and situation on the labour market, and their influences on the decision for starting parental leave. Then I formulate arguments for more father's participation in taking care of children. The empirical part is focused on a qualitative research. The research was realized by interviews done with 10 fathers on parental leaves, and analyzed by coding. Then I made a connection between new data and theoretical resources which are described in the first part. At the end I indicate the posibility of doins some other research, for example with both parents.
Gender stereotypes in TV car commercials

Gender stereotypes and the prejudices associated with them are a frequently discussed issue in the society as well as in the academic world. Even though there is certain evidence of the changes in the media presentation of masculine and feminine roles, the stereotypical illustration of men and women still persists and the media have a significant impact on gender socialisation (Renzetti, Curran, 2003). TV advertising is a typical example of a media format presenting masculine and feminine genders unequally. This thesis examines this assumption focusing on the TV advertising of cars. I also follow-up on my bachelor thesis in which I dealt with the gender stereotypes in the TV advertising for children. In the research background and theory I concentrate on the general understanding of the biological and social views of gender, gender development and gender socialisation. I also provide a short introduction to the media as well as TV advertising theory.
