Migrant women as active citizens
Jenková, Pavla ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Uhde, Zuzana (referee)
Diploma thesis tries to offer a new insight into migration and integration of migrant women living in Czech Republic by means of life-story telling of ten such women. By using this approach the author tries to deconstruct stereotypical understanding of migration as a threat or a security hazard for the accepting society, on the contrary she tries to picture migrant women and their life-stories as tales of people who consider Czech Republic their second home and who actively participate on its development. Citizenship is understood as a membership in society of which migrant women are also legitimate and active members. The thesis should contribute to building positive attitude towards migrant women in general and it also offers recommendations for the public as well as integration policy creators as to how migrant women can be reflected in context of migration.

Sládek, Jan ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee) ; Bernard, Josef (referee)
The goal of this text is to provide understanding of the role that locally organized citizens have in changing general political behavior of Czech people after 1989. The text combines knowledge of urban sociology, political and urban transformation, and citizen/political participation in post-1989 Czech Republic. Theoretically, the text is based in critical reception of urban sociology showing its rather low rate of understanding when analyzing the role of citizens in urban change. The text works with the concept of transaction activism, using it to analytically evaluate the forms of examined collective local action of citizens. Last but not least, attention is paid to the role of ICTs, notably the Internet, in forms of local citizen engagement. To provide the necessary context, the text reflects on main events in political participation on state level as well as it reflects on main urban changes after 1989. Methodologically, the work is based on data from two representative questionnaire surveys and fifteen interviews with representatives of citizen organizations. The main theses are following: (1) low direct experience with political issues leads to predominance of "the politics" as portrayed by mass media, yet it is rather easily unmasked by direct political experience; (2) Although the public opinion...

Pochmanová, Martina ; Kaleta, Petr (advisor) ; Tóth, Andrej (referee)
The bachelor thesis titled 'Students from Polish territories at "Vysoká škola obchodní" in the interwar period' makes an attempt to chart the presence of Polish students following aspects such as their nationality, place of birth, religion and citizenship. The thesis' research is based on archive materials from the Czech technical university, where repositories from the "Vysoká škola obchodní" were used. The thesis focuses on students who were either born in former Poland or had written evidence of polish nationality or citizenship at the University of Commerce. The repositories put to use are dating back to the academic years 1918 to 1938. During research, frequent changes of both Polish and Ukrainian names and surnames were noticed, and in some cases there were linguistic adaptations towards Polish language while in other cases towards Czech language. Evidence of respective nationality did not begin to show on records until 1925, when mostly due to geopolitical developments it became clear to what country the students belonged. An interesting chapter, accompanied by graphs, tackles the question of religion. Surveyed students from Halič were mostly Greek-Catholics, while the rest were either Catholics or Jews. Individuals from other religious groups, such as the Czech Brethren or Baptist Church...

Hlubučková, Kristýna ; Hřebejk, Jiří (advisor) ; Uhl, Pavel (referee)
Rejection of an application for citizenship of the Czech Republic due to a security threat Abstract This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of a minority opinion, based on the thesis that a restriction of procedural rights of applicants for citizenship whose application was rejected due to a security threat is not fully in line with the principle of poportionality and the fair trial right. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the procedure of the Ministry of the Interior in assessing the positions of the intelligence services of the Czech Republic and the Police of the Czech Republice and the role of the Constitutional Court and the Ombudsman in the proces of reviewing potential interference with (fundamental) rights and freedoms of citizenship applicants. For the purpose of the analysis of the statements outlined above is used: case law of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic on the provisons of Article 22 Paragraph 3 and Article 26 of Act No. 186/2013 Coll., On Citizenship of the Czech Republic, and the Explanatory Memorandum to this Act. Gastronauts of Eastern Europe: Experiencing and Digesting Luxury Gastronomy in the Czech Republic
Hajdáková, Iveta ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee) ; Eyal, Gil (referee)
This dissertation is based on a research of luxury gastronomy conducted in two luxury restaurants in Prague. The main focus of analysis is on gastronomic experience as an affective commodity and a vehicle of social, economic and political transformation. The study examines how affect is produced, commodified and how value is generated in luxury "experiential gastronomy." It also analyzes the role of affect in transformation of individuals, the society, consumption practices, entrepreneurial practices, and labor. It shows how experts on gastronomy educate the public on appropriate consumption practices and eating habits. Eating and dining serve as "technologies of the self" (Rose 2004) through which individual and social health and well-being are achieved. Cultivated affect becomes a vehicle of the "purification from socialism" (Eyal 2003) and also plays an important part on the formation of ethical consumer and citizen (Muehlebach 2011). Changing the approach towards citizenship in the United Kingdom due to migration
Kycltová, Barbora ; Lukešová, Anna (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is a one-case study of the approach to citizenship in the UK and the way it has been transformed by naturalization policies and migration. The issue of citizenship became the subject of many academic debates at the turn of the millennium due to the large influx of migrants and racial unrest in the country, and the subsequent introduction of citizenship tests was met with considerable controversy. The aim of this work is to map the much-discussed issue of naturalization in the UK and based on an analysis of the content of preparatory materials for the citizenship test, provide a very unique and comprehensive picture of how the approach to citizenship has changed over the years. The method of qualitative document analysis is used for the processing of publications for civic tests, and the manuals are examined by applying a predefined typology of citizenship and integration approaches in the theoretical part. The thesis assumes that due to concerns about the lack of integration of immigrant communities and the consequent tightening of measures to obtain citizenship status, there has been a change from a liberal and multicultural approach to more restrictive forms of approach to the concept of citizenship. Based on the established analysis of the work, it is concluded that the...
