Creating a school newspaper as a means to promote media literacy

This dissertation deals with the theme of the school magazines in grammar schools. Specifically, it examines the influence of independent school magazines production on the development of pupils' media literacy. The thesis is divided into two parts - the theoretical one and empirical one. Theoretical part briefly defines the term media literacy, explains the growth in use of the term and describes its anchoring in the Czech educational system. It pays attention to definition of media education in educational documents of the Czech Republic and further talks about possibilities of its inclusion into classes and its expected impacts. It briefly compares media production within guided media education and independent school media production created by pupils itselves. The second part is devoted to the survey carried out by three editorial boards of Pilsen school magazines that emerged from pupils' initiative. It explores functions and processes of magazine running, shows differences in each editorial board, its incentive, goals, author's primary expectations etc. Further, the research analyzes the contributions of school magazines independent work to development of pupils' media literacy. Media literacy and media education as a theme of classified research

This thesis aims to explore important research projects conducted in the field of media education and media literacy during approximately the first decade of 21st century in Europe. It deals with research studies covering three areas: research as a tool of consensus, research of media education at schools and research about children and young people and their access to new technologies. The thesis looks into initiatives and legislative measures by the European Union in the area of media literacy development, informs about progress in the field of research projects dealing with media education and presents also the EU Kids Online project. Further it compares 2 research studies conducted in Great Britain in 2010 and introduces the British regulator OFCOM and its research production on the subject of media literacy of children and adults. Based on the presented findings a research study for Czech Republic is proposed on the topic of parental mediation in the internet environment.
Media literacy and children younger school age

Annotation: The diploma thesis occupies with the Media Education, its realization in families with preschool and primary school children and its link-up to the Media Education taught at primary school. It follows more aspects to find out how children are protected against the risks that media provides. The theoretical part solves the basis of the theme using the explanations of concepts regarding of media, its usage, positives and negatives and its way of learning the media literacy. The practical part comes out of parents' and pupils' utterances about the Media Education realized in families. The teaching of the Media Education at schools was found out by questioning of teachers at primary schools. The results of my thesis could point out the risks that media can pose and against which children are not sufficiently protected.
Role of school libraries in development of media literacy in the Czech Republic

This diploma thesis examines the possibilities of involving school librarians and information specialists in the process of growth in media literacy at Czech schools. The theoretical part of the thesis briefly introduces the general issues of media education and media literacy in our country and abroad, while the practical part of the thesis based on its own research, focuses on a particular target group - Prague secondary schools ("gymnázium"). Using a questionnaire and five case studies conducted at selected secondary schools in Prague, it conducts a survey of the current situation of implementation of media education in the Czech Republic. The end of the thesis deals with some ideas of how to involve graduates of the Institute of Information Studies and Librarianship in teaching media education according to the American model of a "teacher librarian".
New media education at secondary waldorf schools

The thesis deals with the history and the present of waldorf schools founded by Rudolf Steiner. Also describes media literacy with an emphasis on new media. It covers the way how the new media education is embedded in the Czech educational system. As a particular example served curriculum of the school subject Information and communication technology of the waldorf secondary school in Prague. The thesis also describes the way of media education in Germany. In the second part of this thesis can be found an evaluation of the questionnaire made in secondary waldorf schools in Prague and Semily which had to learn the status quo of (new) media literacy of the students and their relationship with modern technologies. The end of the thesis deals with the suggestion of improvement of the tuition based on the German model.
Old People and new media

This thesis deals with problems of media literacy of older people. Its main goal is to capture the way seniors can reflect and evaluate new media. It does not attempt to provide specific and universally valid reply to observed problems, but the intention of the work is rather to understand phenomena and conditions of the problems. The text is therefore divided into three main sections: theoretical, practical and analytical. In the theoretical part key information and concepts associated with communication, media literacy, and age and growing old are introduced. Special attention is paid to the description of relationship between seniors and new media. The practical part is devoted to qualitative research. Information about the way older respondents use and evaluate new media is acquired through semi-standardized depth interviews. The analytical part results from the findings presented in the previous two sections. It serves not only as major conclusions of the work but also as notes and recommendation for further studies or researches. All relevant and essential facts are summarized in the conclusion of the paper.
Approach to University and Non-university Media Studies in the Great Britain and Germany

This Master thesis called Approach to university and non-university media studies in the Great Britain and Germany: A comparative study compares the approaches of Great Britain and Germany to tertiary education, which is thematically linked to the media. The thesis shows specific concepts in this field of study in two different environments that have developed under different historical circumstances and as a result of different processes of adoption of media studies as a university subject. The boundaries of this subject are not specifically stated, which provides countries with an opportunity to put their own concept into this subject. This thesis examines tertiary education connected to media institutions of higher education, within individual study programs, in leading professional publications, in the national assessment of educational documents and in approach of multinational organizations. The text defines relevant bodies and syllabi, identifying core competences of graduates of these studies, the processes through which they become experts and educational activities connected to media education. Methodical tools for teachers in area of media education

The focus of this diploma thesis is the question of media education in Czech Republic. The work tries to set a theoretical frame for media education and media literacy. It describes different approaches to the realization to the media education and states the history and development in Czech Republic as well as worldwide. Possibilities of tutor education in this field are also mentioned. Furthermore, the work analyses the state of the art in this field in Slovakia in comparison with Czech Republic. The main objective of this work is to assess the themes used in several chosen printed methodical materials in the field of media education and reasons for favoring specific thematic ranges. Presence of different media in these thematic ranges is evaluated from the viewpoint of their usefulness in teaching and practice of the methodical-didactic approach. Based on the discovered facts the work summarizes the overall situation of media education in Czech Republic.
