The thought legacy of the František Drtina

This diploma thesis deals with the thought legacy of the Czech thinker František Drtina (1861- 1925) who excelled mainly in the field of history of philosophy and pedagogy. He was educational reformer, university professor, scientist and politician. The reconstructed thought legacy of the thesis shows that Drtina significantly contributed to the understanding of the history of philosophy and pedagogy, although he did not create his own philosophical system, but brought his own pedagogical intentions. He devoted most of his writings to these scientifical disciplines. The first chapter deals with his life and follows his life destinies. This is an extensive chapter and reconstructs his life picture. This is how František Drtina is supposed to appear to a reader. The second chapter contains a thought legacy, which is set in the context of his time. There is also an analysis of his philosophical and pedagogical works. Part of this is also an evaluation by authors of the time, who are better to grasp Drtina's thought legacy. The thesis is written objectively, but with the author's interest in Czech philosophy. The work must be seen as a contribution to the history of Czech philosophy.

Building an Intelligence Information Network in 1914-1918 on the example of "Czechoslovak Independence" and "La Nation Tchéque"

The diploma thesis analyses the topic of building a foreign intelligence network and its activities during the First World War (1914-1918) on the example of the Československá samostatnost and La Nation Tchéque magazines. The introduction maps the steps of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk after his emigration in 1914. Masaryk was the main personality of the whole foreign affair, but the thesis also deals with other representatives of the foreign resistance, such as Lev Sychrava, who was responsible for the issuing of Československá samostatnost, or Ernest Denis, who together with Edvard Beneš edited La Nation Tchéque. The work is based primarily on archival sources with special regard to the collection of the Editorial Offices of the Československá samostatnost and La Nation Tchéque, which is stored in the Military Historical Archive. This collection contains correspondence from both editorial offices, draft articles for both papers and other auxiliary materials from which the content of both papers was formed. The content of the entire collection is gradually revealed in the thesis. 99 Summary Buberův kulturní sionismus a Masarykův humanismus - komparativní studie Buber's Cultural Zionism and Masaryk's Humanism - Comparative Study Marie Venclová This thesis deals with various aspects of understanding the term nation, its roots and dimensions in the works of Martin Buber and Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. The comparative study is based on analysis of Buber's Three Addresses on Judaism and Masaryk's Problem of a Small Nation. In these texts the philosophers present their attitudes and ideas about the meaning, origin and content of the existence of a nation. The results of the comparison show, that their points of view are similar in more than a few aspects and what most importantly bonds their ideas is the moral, spiritual and cultural understanding of the meaning of a nation. Furthermore, they both stress the responsibility of each and every individual part of the society for implementing such ideas into practice. Buber's cultural Zionism as well as Masaryk's humanism are also concepts based on critical self-reflection and need of education, which serves to broaden horizons and identify positive values in one's own nation. The Diploma thesis "Thomas G. Masaryk's journalistic activity" aims to analyze Masaryk as a journalist. The thesis describes the process of Masaryk's evolution from childhood and school years through his university studies in Vienna and Leipzig till his move to Prague, where he worked at the local university. It emphasizes all the major aspects that formed his personali-ty. It focuses mainly on his position in the magazines Athenaeum, Čas and Naše doba, which then influenced many events. The issue is settled in the historical and cultural social context of the second half of the 19th century.

Work of Jan Hus and his assessment of the various historical periods from the perspective of textbooks and important personalities

The introductory chapters describe the reasons for the economic, social and political crisis, resulting in the unrest in Europe in the early 15th century and is shown activity Hus's predecessors Konrad Walhauser, John Milíč of Kromeriz, Matthew of Janov, Vojtech Raňkův from Ježov, Thomas Štítný of Štítné. The diploma thesis is also engaged in the work of John Wycliffe, who influenced the thinking of scholars throughout Europe, including Bohemia, where from his thoughts and opinions drew Jan Hus. The diploma thesis shows the influence Hus's thoughts and actions in education and elementary education in the 15th and 16 century. Hus influenced the development of the Czech language and spelling. The thesis, called Czech films based on well-known criminal cases: from reality, newspaper news to feature film and film reviews. Murder in Polná - Case of Leopold Hilsner, deals with a criminal case which took place at the break of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. A young girl, Anežka Hrůzová, was murdered in the Březina woods outside the town of Polná. At a time when anti-Semitic sentiments dominated the society, a Polná resident and a Jew, Leopold Hilsner, was accused as the perpetrator of the crime. He was later convicted of this crime, and another one of a similar nature, even though there was no relevant evidence or testimonies. The period news outlets played a significant role in spreading the anti-Semitic tendencies. This thesis describes the course of this real-life case and focuses on the methods the media used to inform about it. Director Viktor Polesný made a film on the issue, Zločin v Polné (Murder in Polná), which is analysed in the thesis, along with the reviews written about this film, including the reception by viewers. The thesis Dr. Jan Herben - Journalist and Politician (1857-1936) maps the life of this distinguished journalist and politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries from his studies till the end of his professional career. It is based on literature about Jan Herben or about the period of turn of the century, on periodicals of that time, and archive materials found in the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague and in Herben's summer house in Hostišov. It focuses mainly on the period of publishing the Čas periodical which under Dr. Jan Herben became the main daily of the Realist Party of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, on affairs linked to the publication of Čas, including the disputes over the authenticity of two ostensible early medieval Czech manuscripts, a wave of protests following publication of the first editorial Our Two Questions by Hubert Gordon Shauer, the Hilsner affair, or Dr. Jan Herben's accusation of embezzlement of funds collected for orphans in the town of Most. Historical Examples and the Search for National Identity in texts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Roman Dmowski. A Comparative Study

The doctoral thesis deals with comparative analysis of historical examples in the search for national identity in texts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937) and Roman Dmowski (1864-1939). Both Masaryk and Dmowski belonged to prominent representatives of public and political life in their countries at the end of the 19th and in first decades of the 20th centuries. The question of national identity is a theme often associates with their life and work. Masaryk and Dmowski influenced Czech and Polish politics, political and intellectual thought before 1914. During the First World War, they were leaders of Czechoslovak and Polish politics in West European emigration (Masaryk as the president of the Czechoslovak National Committee, Dmowski as the president of the Polish National Committee). Nevertheless, in the postwar period, their career diverged. Masaryk became president of Czechoslovakia and symbol of the Czechoslovak identity, Dmowski represented rather the opposition against mainstream development in postwar Poland. Diploma thesis "Leaving of Czechoslovak democracy giants; comparison of media images of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk's and Vaclav Havel's death and funeral in Czech Press" aims to compare the media images of the presidents' death and funeral in broadsheet and tabloid newspapers of that time. In this matter, media analyzed the lives of these great personalities, their work, political views, their acceptance and renown abroad, their merits and their critical reception as well. The study itself is divided into two main parts. The first one being the theoretical part informs about the political and social context of the time in which Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and Vaclav Havel lived and worked and it discusses their personalities in more details. Furthermore, the methodology used in the thesis is included in this section as well, representing and explaining the method of the media research. In the second practical part, the thesis provides the characteristics of the chosen broadsheet and tabloid newspapers - Lidove noviny, Poledni list and Blesk. By using qualitative analysis the thesis seeks to determine how media presented the presidents at that time. Journalism Karel Capek and his "quiet voice" at the time of threats to democracy (1935-1938)

In my bachelor thesis on "Karel Čapek and his ‚quiet voice' at the time of danger for democracy" I will analyze his journalistic texts published between 1935-1938 in the journal Lidové Noviny, České slovo and the magazine Přítomnost. I'll be watching Čapek's development in specific years while noticing how his journalistic work was transforming with the approaching year 1938. Particularly, I will watch Čapek's activities related to the fight to save democracy in Czechoslovakia during the gradual expansionof fascism. To better understand the significance of the texts I give the socio-historical background as well. The aim of the work is mainly to find out how the Čapek's literary works reflected the historical events of that time and if Čapek's "silentvoice" was sufficient warning, concise and striking. This work does not deal comprehensively Čapek'swork, it only selects the most significant texts of a certain period.
