The Narrative Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Category Of Space And The Category Of The Character In Jan Čep's Early Prose
Hejnicová, Anežka ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Hrdlička, Josef (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is to examine the narrative categories of space in Jan Čep's early short story collections. From the hermeneutical point of view, the methods of narratological and semiotic analysis are mainly used. In relation to the topic of literary space, the thesis also aims to provide a general overview of the perspectives from which literary space can be viewed. By looking at different approaches to the category of space, we will find out what themes and motifs fictional space brings in Čep's specific stories and how closely the category of space is connected with other narrative categories, especially the categories of characters and narrator. The analysis of the selected stories should conclude, that in Čep's fictional world, rather than "space-time", what is important is a specific relationship between the development of the space category and the formation of individual characters.
Space and Locations in Czech Poetism
Nováková, Barbora ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee)
The bachelor thesis aims to describe the processes and possible motivations for the creation of fictional environments by the authors of the Devetsil group in the 1920s. It will particularly focus on the environments that, by using proper names of places belonging to the sphere of the real world (e.g. Paris, Prague, New York, Russia, Java, Italy, etc.), thematise the relationship between it and the fictional environment as its variant. For individual environments situated in different places, it traces what is selected as their proxy features and what is suppressed, how this selection of features and their meanings affects the resulting images of environments, how these features are combined within and across environments, and how images of environments are transformed as a result. Based on their comparison, it observes what the environments have in common, how they influence and converge with each other, how the preferences of different ones evolve over the decades, and how they relate to environments referred to as Prague or domestic. It relates these findings to the aesthetic and ideological tendencies of poetism, as well as to contemporary attitudes to travel, and relationships to and orientation in space-time. Keywords poetism, representation, exotism, exotic environment, urban environment,...
Blending of Opposites: Jaroslav Kolman Cassius' Love Ballads
Klaus, Jan ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
The master's thesis Blending of Opposites: Jaroslav Kolman Cassius' love ballads aims to bring attention to the mentioned Czech writer and journalist, whom I consider unfairly overlooked. It focuses on the late phase of his work, i.e. the love ballad, and tries to describe the reasons that lie in the structure of the work, thanks to which they arouse aesthetic pleasure in its readers. It is above all the poet's register of motifs, which are deeply rooted in the tradition of love ballads, but here they function on the principle of contrasts taken to the extreme and on the basis of combinations and permutations permeate entire collections, making individual ballads, with a few exceptions, "variations on one theme". The thesis pays attention not only to said polar contrasts, but also to sudden exceptions and their effect in the structure of the work. In addition to intratextual analysis, attention is also paid to the relationship of Kolman's work to the tradition of the ballad as a genre (with a focus on the Czech interwar ballad) and works with literature dealing directly with the discourse of love relationships themselves.
Predicting the outcomes of tennis matches. How important is the factor of different surfaces?
Sklenička, Jan ; Kurka, Josef (advisor) ; Palanský, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis focuses on predicting the outcomes of ATP tennis matches with the aim of investigating the effect of different tennis surfaces. We define nine surface variables based on two different clustering methods, and incorporate these variables into models that were estimated using logistic regression. Such approach allows us to robustly observe how the effect of specializing on a spe- cific surface translates into the match winning probability. The accuracy of the models ranges from 63% to 65%, with the models incorporating the effect of surface specialization displaying a superior predictive accuracy. Based on several evaluation metrics, the results confirm that surface specialization is a crucial variable when predicting tennis matches. We are also able to identify that the most accurate metric to measure surface specialization is the difference in normalized winning rate. Moreover, the analysis reveals that the specializa- tion on grass courts is the most important compared to clay or hard courts. Lastly, we formalize betting strategies based on the predicted probabilities from the models, and we are able to achieve positive out-of-sample return on invest- ment (ROI). Accounting for the effect of surface specialization increases ROI on the non-naive betting strategies. JEL Classification...
"Immense Beauty, Tremendous Trap": the Roman Journeys of Josef Svatopluk Machar and Jaroslav Durych
Horský, Jan ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
This thesis deals with the tradition of literary reflections on journeys to Rome and Italy by comparing two Czech essayistic travelogues that fall into this tradition - Josef Svatopluk Machar's Rome and Jaroslav Durych's Roman Journey. Both of these texts present very specific and contrasting representations of the traveller's experience and stay in the "eternal city". On the basis of the genre and Italian-travel contextualization of both works and the theoretical conceptualization of the two basic themes (the issue of movement in travel writing and the concept of Rome as a text or palimpsest), it was possible to analyze the common features of both works as well as significant differences in a comprehensive way. Both author-travelers bring with them to Rome their own, very specific and highly exacerbated view of Italy, history, art or religion, and these dispositions are strongly manifested in the way they elaborate their experience of travel and Rome in their texts. Josef Svatopluk Machar traverses Roman history, creating a strong opposition between antiquity and Christianity, and is completely captivated by Rome. Jaroslav Durych seeks his place in an incomprehensible world through intimate, poetic reflections. Both travelogues, with their distinctive portrayals of Rome, continue the tradition of...
Popularity of Online Computer Gaming and Its Relation to People's Lifestyle in European Countries
Hlinka, Vladimír ; Šíma, Jan (advisor) ; Voráček, Josef (referee)
Title: Popularity of Online Computer Gaming and Its Relation to People's Lifestyle in European Countries Objectives: The aim of the thesis is to find possible associations between the popularity of online gaming, expressed as the number of players per 1 million inhabitants, and indicators of healthy or unhealthy lifestyles. If a statistically significant relationship between the variables is found, it is appropriate to further investigate the nature and strength of this association and compare the results of the thesis with other research in this area. Methods: Linear regression was used to analyze the secondary data. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients and Shapiro-Wilk normality test were used to test the assumptions of the regression analysis. Statistical significance of the data was tested at the significance level α = 0,05. The regression models were constructed after prior testing of the assumptions of the regression analysis using Jamovi. Results: After evaluating the assumptions of the regression analysis, a total of 4 regression models were constructed for the following variables: Smoking, Participation in Cultural and Sporting Events, Working Out and Not Drinking Alcohol. A significant relationship between the independent and dependent variables was observed in the case of...
The importance of the Scuderia Ferrari team for the F1 World Championship
Martinec, Jan ; Voráček, Josef (advisor) ; Waic, Marek (referee)
Title: The importance of the Scuderia Ferrari team for the F1 World Championship Objectives: Main aim of this thesis is to analyse and identify the reasons for the Scuderia Ferrari's important position in the Formula 1 World Championship through the historical events of the team and to vindicate or disprove the general fact why Ferrari is an essential, hardly replaceable part of the F1 championship. Methods: The following methods used in this thesis are: extensive research of available sources on Scuderia Ferrari, methods used to produce a historical work - direct method, deduction method, progressive method, comparative method, biographical method and collective biography method. Results: Scuderia Ferrari is one of the pillars for the F1 World Championship. Ferrari has its DNA based on Grand Prix racing, unlike the other manufacturers operating in F1, and it also carries values referring to the beginning of the championship when it was formed. The team's culture, derived from its Italian origins, makes it different from other teams based in Germanic-speaking countries. It also confirmed that behind successful organisations there are strong personalities that have shaped the history, position and perception of Scuderia Ferrari. The team has also been instrumental in the politics of F1 throughout...
