Translation with Commentary: Queer Fiction - The Ambiguous Emergence of a Genre

The aim of this thesis is to translate the text Queer Fiction - The Ambiguous Emergence of a Genre and make a commentary. The commentary is divided into four parts. The first one is an analysis of the source text, it is followed by a description of the method of translation I used. The third part threats the main problems I faced while translating, including their solution and their explanations. In the final part, I analyse shifts between the original and translated texts.

The thesis contains a translation of the chapter The hungerstrikes 1980-81 from the book Making Sense of the Troubles by David McKittrick and David McVea and a commentary on the translation. The first part of the commentary includes a translation analysis of the source text on different levels. The second part consists of a typology of translation problems on those levels and an overall approach to translation. The third chapter describes the translation method and specific strategies for dealing with the outlined translation problems. The commentary is concluded by a typology of translation shifts.

The first part of this thesis is a translation of the Preface, the Preamble, the first 15 Laws and Appendices A and B from The Laws of Cricket. The aim of this translation is that it will be used by Czech speakers while playing cricket in the Czech Republic or elsewhere. Cricket in the Czech Republic is not a widespread sport and thus several new Czech terms had to be created. The second part analyzes extratextual and intratextual factors of the original text according to Christiane Nord, describes the main translation problems and their solutions, shows the translation method and lists shifts which occurred in the translation.

The aim of the present thesis is to translate Chapter IX. "The Rise of Terrorism" from Bernard Lewis's The Crisis of Islam from English into Czech and to lay out an analysis of the translation and the source text. The theoretical part includes source text analysis, typology of translation problems, typology of translation shifts and description of the selected translation method. A copy of the source text is attached.

The aim of this thesis is to translate an extract from Tony Howarth's book Twentieth Century History - The World Since 1900 and subsequently, to comment on the translation. The commentary consists of four parts. The first one is a translation analysis describing the specific aspects of the source text on the basis of analyzing the extratextual and intratextual factors. The second part is dedicated to the translation problems typology. Here, the specific linguistic as well as cultural problems linked with the translation are described and a defending of the respective translator's solutions is included. The third part decsribes the translation shifts that appeared during translation and the last part describes the translation method.

The aim of this bachelor work is to adequately translate a passage from Understanding Muhammad: A Psychobiography; a book written by a Canadian Iranian author Ali Sina. The translation is accompanied by a commentary in the form of an academic study. The commentary includes an analysis of the original text with regard to the aspects relevant for a translation, a description of the method used in the translation and a typology of problems and necessary shifts in translation.

The thesis contains a translation of the first chapter of the book Penguins of the World by Wayne Lynch published in 2007 in London and a commentary on the translation. The aim was to preserve in the translation the function of the source text as well as the author's style with respect to different conventions of the genre in source and target languages. The commentary includes translation analysis of the source text, analysis of translation problems and typology of translation shifts. Commented translation problems and shifts are supported by concrete examples. The commentary is concluded by a chapter on the translation method.

The commentary consists of four parts. The first part is an overall translation analysis of the original text. The second part discusses the typology of translation problems, analyzing specific problems of cultural and linguistic non-equivalence and explaining the translator's decisions. The third part comments on the typology of translation shifts. The fourth, final part describes the translation method that has been selected. The source text is to be found in the annex.
