Involuntary celibacy in a natural habitat: incel forums, identity and race
Báča, Václav ; Collins, Jonathan (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
Primarily active in online spaces, involuntary celibates (incels) are mostly male individuals who experience frustration through their perceived inability to establish romantic or sexual relationship. In recent years incels received increased public attention because of acts of mass violence, perpetrated by self-identified incels. The thesis uses Robert Kozinet's methodology of online netnography to examine the intersection of involuntary celibate identity and race. Utilising Van Veelen's Integrative Model of Social Identification, the project focuses on the construction of incel identity among the largest incel forum - incels.is. Providing an inductive analysis of the race-related content collected directly from the forum, based in the principles of Charmanaz's Constructivist Grounded Theory, the study investigates the construction of incel identities, uncovering the nuances behind both individual and collective incel experiences. Concluding the findings of the analysis, the thesis contends that race is the central feature through and around which incel identity is constructed among non-white incels. Simultaneously, it argues that for different subgroups of incels, the central feature differs, largely depending on individual context and background. Furthermore, the thesis puts forward the concept...
Shaping IR discourse: the case of Telegram in Slovakia in the light of Russia-Ukraine war
Salíni, Michal ; Földes, Kristián (advisor) ; Martinková, Viera (referee)
Social media, such as Telegram, have been playing an increasingly important role in shaping the public discourse in Slovakia and abroad, including the issue of the perception of the main actors and practice of International Relations. This thesis explores the process of construction of identities of such actors in the most popular Telegram channels in Slovakia, which have been labelled as spreading disinformation or misinformation narratives, in the light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Theoretical approaches entailing post-structuralist perception of IR, Mental Models, Social Identity Theory, and Symbolic Interactionism are employed to understand the role of the examined narratives in shaping the foreign policy perception in Slovak society. When it comes to methodology, Qualitative Content Analysis is employed to identify the narratives portraying individual actors and their occurrence. Secondly, features of the Discourse-Historical Approach, complemented by van Dijk's classification of analytical categories of discourse structures, are used to examine the discursive strategies the posts used to convey the message to the audience. The outcomes of the analysis show a rather high degree of occurrence of the war in Ukraine as a topic and pinpoint Russia and Ukraine as the most frequently...
The relationship between social identity, belonging, and motivation in the decision-making process of dropping out within one year of starting university studies among first-generation students
Ambrušová, Orsolya ; Machovcová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Škanderová, Taťána (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is dedicated to the study of first-generation students who decided to drop out of university within one year of starting their studies. The aim is to examine the reasons that led them to make this decision, the positive aspects of their studies and their subsequent completion and, finally, to identify the key moments and barriers to continuing their studies at university. The theoretical part of the thesis examines social identity, the phenomenon of belonging, motivation and support from family and the university. In addition, the harmonisation of work and study habits and the occurrence of imposter syndrome among first-generation students are discussed. The empirical part describes the qualitative research from the research problem to the methods of data interpretation. Nine respondents participated in the research and the qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews, then analysed and interpreted using the method of reflexive thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2013). The findings show that the reasons for dropping out of higher education are many and varied. These include a fading sense of belonging, a search for stability in life and financial optimism. Furthermore, there was a discrepancy between the idealised image of university life and its real...
Complexity of social identity in relation to self-efficacy: analysis of hierarchy significance within a corporate environment
Křížová, Lucie ; Heider, David (advisor) ; Machovcová, Kateřina (referee)
In this paper, we examine the complexity of social identity in the corporate environment and its impact on individuals' perceived self-efficacy. We explore this relationship within the framework of a corporate hierarchy consisting of two identified groups: the BO group (non-technical and support experts) and the FO group (technical and business experts). The perceived prestige of these groups corresponds to a division between the high-status FO group and the low-status BO group. In the theoretical section, we discuss the definition of basic concepts to better contextualize them within the present issue. These concepts include social identity theory, self- categorization theory, the definition of in-group and out-group, and the status of groups. The aim of this endeavor was to investigate the relationship between the degree of identification with the in-group and perceived self-efficacy, how the relationship between identification with the firm as a whole and perceived self-efficacy manifests in the context of low-status/high-status groups, and the relationship between an individual's identification with the in-group and their identification with the whole group. To achieve this, we conducted a questionnaire survey in a specific firm (N=64), using methods that track subjective self-perception in an...

The crucial chapter deals with the social categorization as a key mechanism for building and maintaining the social identity of the deaf. The following part is devoted to the collective identity, where two ideal types of the deaf collective identity are presented. The work is based on the qualitative research, which was conducted through semi-structured interviews with the deaf, simultaneously translated into Czech. From a methodological point of view, the presented study is based on the principles of the Grounded theory. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The motive of justice and its social psychological correlates
Homolová, Pavla ; Hnilica, Karel (advisor) ; Blatný, Marek (referee)
The thesis aims at social psychological aspects of the justice motive. Its purpose is to outline the links between justice motivation and social context, primarily to socioeconomic status, social identity and culture. Major differences between implicit and explicit justice motives are presented, the focus is mainly on the belief in a just world as an important indicator of the justice motive. Distributive and procedural norms of justice are described considering their social dependences. The justice motive and evaluation are viewed from the perspectives of theory of social exchange and equity, social identity theory and theory of system justification. In the empirical part the relation between SES and BJW in Czech society is tested in two studies. The analysis results of the quota public opinion survey (Aktér 2015, N = 926) indicate that people of high SES believe explicitly in a just world more than people of low SES. The estimated contradictions to the results of studies carried out in American context are discussed. The findings from the Czech survey may be relevant especially in the context of less socially differentiated societies. The analysis of data stemming from online quasiexperimental study (N = 82) of people aged 18 - 33 does not confirm these results, possible methodological...

Kdolská, Helena ; Doubek, David (advisor) ; Bittnerová, Dana (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to conduct qualitative research aimed at psychological aspects of tattoos in the form of ethnographic study. The research follows a relationship between an individual and his tattoos with the main topics being a motivation for getting a tattoo, meaning of the tattoo for the owner, and the relationship between the artist and his client. Data were gathered using unstructured interviews with an emphasis on building trust between the researcher and the interviewee. The study concludes the motivation can be distinguished into internal and external. The internal motivation represents the benefits tattoos can bring to his owner while the external motivation shows the ways an individual can use the tattoo to send a message to others. As for the owner-tattoo relationship, results show variations in how can one perceive his tattoos and what tattoo could mean for the owner. Some of the respondents viewed their tattoos as just a body decoration, others used them as symbols of their own deeper thoughts and lifestyle. When exploring the artist-client relationship, it has been found out trust and mutual sympathies as well as setting up proper boundaries to keep the relationship on the professional level all seem to play an important role.
