Hillová, Sarah ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The diploma thesis titled "Themes resonating in the Czech presidential elections 2023: Content analysis of interviews and debates with candidates Petr Pavel, Andrej Babiš and Danuše Nerudová" examines the form of pre-election presidential debates and interviews in 2023. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the changes brought about by digital media, and at the same time confirms the strong position that debates still have in the media world. Although various elements and segments have been incorporated into the debates with the intention of reaching a wider audience, the tradition of the debates still remains. The practical part of the thesis consists of a content analysis of the speeches of the selected candidates. Sources come from both traditional and digital media. The thesis sets the main agenda of pre- election debates and interviews, which consists of seven topics. Quantitative analysis showed that despite Petr Pavel's greater media space, Andrej Babiš was able to surpass him in the length of his speech.

Floriánová, Eliška ; Konrádová, Marcela (advisor) ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (referee)
This master's thesis explores the involvement of influencers in the Czech presidential campaigns of 2023 from the perspective of political communication. It analyzes the phenomenon of influencers' engagement in political campaigns through shared content on social media platforms. The theoretical part of the thesis examines the current issues surrounding social media and its successful creators, influencers, who have the ability to influence the opinions and attitudes of their followers. The thesis relies on the concept of the celebritization of politics, which explores the process by which politicians adopt communication strategies and elements associated with celebrities and the entertainment industry to gain greater public attention. However, a part of the celebrity culture theory also involves celebrities entering politics, which will be thoroughly examined in the theoretical section. The research is conducted using two quantitative methods: content analysis and questionnaire survey. By employing these research methods, the research questions will be answered, which investigate the most common forms and methods of involving influencers in political campaigns during elections. The research will clarify the role of influencers in contemporary political communication and their level of ability to...
Pre-election TV debates on the example of the 2023 presidential election
Preissová, Viktorie ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This master thesis deals with the pre-election TV debates before the second round of the presidential elections in 2023 in the Czech Republic, when Petr Pavel and Andrej Babiš stood against each other. The thesis draws on political communication theory, normative media theory, agenda-setting theory and previous analyses of the TV debates. Using quantitative content analysis, the three selected pre-election duels are examined in terms of the moderator's agenda setting, the types of moderator's questions and speeches, the candidates' agenda setting, the candidates' running away from the topic, and the type and tonality of the candidates' messages. The results of the analysis show that each moderator gave different importance to each topic. However, the moderators most frequently focused on the presidency itself, the conduct of the election, the communist past of both candidates, security issues, and the current government. In most cases, their speeches were neutral and did not take the form of a question. The debate on Czech Television, moderated by Martin Řezníček, had the most even distribution of replicas on each topic. Nova and Prima TV had a less even distribution of topics, and two topics dominated both of them. On both Nova and Prima, the most frequently communicated instructions were those...

Sova, Matouš ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The present thesis "Media entertainment and politainment. Case study: Presidential elections in the Czech Republic" analyses political communication in the presidential election campaign in the Czech Republic. Political institutions are increasingly dependent on mass and new media. The notion of politainment is now an integral part of political news. The main aim of this paper is to introduce this concept in the context of the contemporary nature of political communication. The elements of politainment are analysed in the campaigns of the two most successful candidates applying for Head of state of the Czech Republic, Andrej Babiš and Petr Pavel. My primary focus is on the television appearances of both candidates in televised debates on Czech Television, FTV Prima and TV NOVA, which were the highlight of the entire presidential campaign. I was interested in the content of both candidates' messages and the overall character of the debates. In this thesis I am going to answer the following selected questions: What is the role of political communication in politics? How has its form changed since the 1990s? What do we mean by the term "politainment"? What are positive and negative aspects of politainment? What were the issues raised during the presidential campaigns? Can we consider the historic first direct...

Pásler, Šimon ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the pre-election TV debates before the second round of the presidential elections in 2023. Based on Functional Theory, the aim of the paper is to identify the types of messages that candidates Andrej Babiš and Petr Pavel used in the pre-election television debates ahead of the second round of the 2023 presidential election. Furthermore, the aim is to compare these results with the findings of previous works analysing the pre-election debates of the 2013 and 2018 presidential elections. Furthermore, the time allocation given to the candidates in the debates is compared. The theoretical part of the paper first focuses on the link between politics and media, public and private ones and political communication, political actors, media campaigns and negativity. Next, the emergence of pre-election debates in the United States and the presidential election in the Czech Republic is described. The thesis includes a review of research on pre-election debates and a description of the Functional Theory used. Next, the thesis continues with the methodology. The practical part includes a description of the debates analysed on Czech television, on CNN Prima and on Nova. The practical part of the thesis used a content analysis based on W. L. Benoit's Functional Theory. Based on Functional...
Media communication of presidential candidates on Twitter
Dvořáková, Daniela ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to map and evaluate the political media communication of the candidates for the 2023 presidential elections. In the research I first try to outline the situation and circumstances that were related to the period before the 2023 presidential elections and at the same time I introduce the presidential candidates - Andrej Babiš, Petr Pavel, Danuša Nerudová, Mark Hilšer, Pavel Fischer, Karel Diviš and Tomáš Zima. In the empirical part of my thesis, a systematic and structured approach to data analysis was used, with the main emphasis on the method of content analysis using coding. This analytical method enables the identification of key patterns, themes, and relationships in textual or image data. Content coding was conducted as part of the thesis, which involved assigning categories or codes to individual Twitter posts of political candidates in the 2023 presidential election. The first part of the research included posts by seven candidates from November 25, 2022, to January 14, 2023, while the second part of the research included posts by only two advancing candidates from January 15, 2023, to January 28, 2023.
Self-presentation strategies of political candidates in the Czech presidential campaign 2023
Balážová, Zuzana ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Konrádová, Marcela (referee)
The bachelor thesis examines the role of visual communication in politics and the formation of self-presentation strategies of selected candidates during the Czech presidential elections in 2023. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces visual political communication, cognitive processing of images and the formation of political image through visual frames and relevant dimensions. The analytical part of the thesis uses quantitative and qualitative content analysis to explore the self-presentation strategies of candidates Petr Pavel, Andrej Babiš, Danuša Nerudová and Pavel Fischer on Instagram. The aim of the study was to find out how the selected political candidates used the social media Instagram for self-presentation and which visual frames they emphasized. An analysis of 1,371 Instagram posts of the selected candidates reveals a preference for the ideal candidate frame over the populist candidate frame. The analysis equally reveals gender differences in the use of the dimensions of compassion. The work further explores users' interactions with different visual frames and dimensions, and slight differences in the number of interactions are noted.
Discursive analysis of political communication in the discussion of the amendment to Act No. 329/2021 on the provision of childcare in the 2017-2021 electoral period
Černá, Jitka ; Hejzlarová, Eva (advisor) ; Angelovská, Olga (referee)
Children's groups are one of the effective family policy tools for reconciling family and working life. At the same time, within the current system of pre-school care in the Czech Republic, they supplement the insufficient capacity of kindergartens. In 2014, Act No. 247/2014 Coll. on children's groups was approved, which basically defined the conditions and standards in which children's groups operate. Tools for reconciling family and working life, which include children's groups, came to the fore following the adoption of the European Directive 2019/1158 on work-life balance. Children's groups were funded by the European Operational Programme Employment, but this could only be drawn on until 2022. Therefore, in 2021, the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic discussed the need to reconsider the funding of children's groups and, at the same time, to revise the conditions for running children's groups. The thesis aims to investigate the communication strategies of political actors on the topic of children's groups using the method of discursive analysis, at the same time comparing the communication of children's groups with the way of communication of other topics from the remit of social affairs in the election programmes of the then parliamentary parties in the 2017 and 2021...
Affective turn of political communication on social media
Zápotocký, Jan ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Havlík, Vlastimil (referee) ; Charvát, Jan (referee)
1 This dissertation examines the transformations of political communication through the lens of the affective turn explaining the interrelationships between the energy of the political leader, the subsequent intersubjective process of emotional energy production among his supporters, ritual and parasocial relations, and the establishing of political fandom. The thesis explores individual phenomena through virtual ethnography, taking the paralinguistic and phatic aspects of communication as the defining features of affective expressions. The analytical part of the thesis explores the Přísaha movement, its leader Robert Šlachta and the movement's Facebook community as representative of this broader phenomenon. In particular, the dissertation highlights the uniqueness of the resulting synergy creating political fandom and the fact that despite strategically managed and inauthentic communication, the resulting emotions of the supporters are authentic, and they experience intense feelings of hope, courage, love or care. The energy of the leader himself is the primary stimulus that draws followers into the movement, and encourages their activity. The emotional energy experienced, which in this case is the unifying substance and the cause of the emergence of interaction rituals in the structure of online social...
Populism as a discursive strategy: an analysis of the communication of selected populist actors in the Czech political arena
Křovák, Jan ; Charvát, Jakub (advisor) ; Just, Petr (referee)
This paper analyses the concept of populism as a discursive strategy. Therefore, it uses the view of populist discourse as discussed by Ernesto Laclau and other authors in their works. The author analyses the communication practices of four selected Czech political actors on social networks (Facebook and Twitter) in the period before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in October 2021. For the analysis, the author chose representatives who are commonly labelled as populists, i.e. former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, far-right populists, i.e. Tomio Okamura, and then two politicians representing mainstream parties - Markéta Pekarová Adamová from TOP 09 and Vít Rakušan from STAN. In the theoretical part, the author describes in depth the phenomenon of populism on the basis of expert literature, and in a comprehensive way points out the relationship between populism, social networks, media and political communication. In the practical part, the author conducted a so-called critical discursive analysis of posts of the politicians on the above-mentioned social media and then compared their dominant communication practices. The author then places the data and results of the research in context of the populist narrative described in the theoretical part of the thesis.
