Lifestyle and relationships in the subculture of ballet
Erben, Jakub ; Buriánek, Jiří (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the lifestyle and relationships among professional ballet dancers. Previous studies that have focused on this group, have not focused on the lifestyle as a complex phenomenon, the goal is therefore to supplement existing knowledge in this matter. Given the recent research coverage problem, the work uses explorative approach to the conceptual level based on the concepts of lifestyle and subculture and it uses methodologically a qualitative approach. In particular, the conceptual basis in the form of subculture largely determines the orientation, the process and the structure of the paper. It figures as a tool that allows us to organize a view of professional ballet dancers, and at the same time during the work the suitability of its application to this group is empirically validated. A view on professional dancers is also structured with biographical perspectives on the assumption that the form of life in this group is largely determined by the element of time. After defining the concepts related to ballet and introducing the factual account of events enabling to look into the historical and institutional context in which the Czech ballet dancers act, followed by a description logic of its study in this paper, including basic concepts of introducing subculture and lifestyle,...

Šimčáková, Markéta ; Vanek, Marián (advisor) ; Presslerová, Pavla (referee)
1 ABSTRACT Ballet is a risk environment for the development of eating disorders. The causes of these pathologies have not yet been sufficiently explained. The objective of this paper was to test the risk factors specific for the ballet environment which might be connected with the development of eating disorders. Participants were 181 female students from dance conservatories in Czech Republic. Two questionnaires were used. The objective was to assess abnormalities in eating behaviour and specific factors of ballet environment which might cause body dissatisfaction. A high risk of eating disorders according to the EAT-26 test was found in one third of female students. The statistically significant correlation between the factor and the higher risk of presence of eating disorder was found in all eleven factors examined. Students who displayed body dissatisfaction caused by relevant risk factor had higher average EAT-26 score than students who did not display body dissatisfaction induced by the same factor. Factors which caused body dissatisfaction among the highest number of students were: Comparing body shape with other dancers, Ballet ideals and Mirrors in classrooms. Nine out of eleven tested factors caused body dissatisfaction in more than half of the participants. A programme focused on preventing the...

Stibor, Eva ; Nováková, Tereza (advisor) ; Maršáková, Kateřina (referee)
Thesis title: Work related musculoskeletal disorders in professional ballet dancers Objective: The high demands of the ballet dancers' profession are reflected especially within the individual dancer's musculoskeletal body system which is repeatedly exposed to a physical load that is specific for classical dance. The objective of this thesis is to find out what are the work related musculoskeletal disorders ("WRMD") in dancers who work in the Czech Republic, what risk factors prevail and which preventive strategies are applied to avoid the occurrence of WRMD. Methods: The stated objective was achieved by means of a questionnaire survey, during which randomly selected women/young adults with vocational training in ballet who are/were professional ballet dancers voluntarily filled in a questionnaire. In total, 56 ballet dancers within the region of the Czech Republic took part in this survey. The questionnaire consisted of open and closed questions and its conception was based on the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire ("NMQ"), with selected questions adapted to the specifics of the ballet profession. The first part of the questionnaire consisted of questions related to sociodemographic data, the next part aimed to gather data on the musculoskeletal disorders suffered and preventive strategies...

Title: Menstrual Disorders in Ballet Dancers and Orienteering Runners Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to determine prevalence of selected menstrual disorders in ballet dancers and orienteering runners. The data were analyzed and compared to available literature. Methods: The theoretical part of this thesis is a summary of available literature. The data for the research were collected by anonymous non-standardized questionnaire and processed by descriptive analysis, which was proceeded in Microsoft Excel 2010, Statistika and NCSS free version. Qualitative data were evaluated by qualitative analysis. Results: A total of 103 women participated in the research, 57 women from general population (control group), 24 ballet dancers and 22 orienteering runners. The significant higher age at menarché was found in ballet dancers group (Chi square, p = 0,038; p < 0,05) as well in group of orienteering runners (Chi square, p = 0,032; p < 0,05) compared to cotrol group. There was proved a significant deviation of prevalence of secondary amenorrhea in ballet dancers group compared to orienteering runners (Chi square, p = 0,024; p < 0,05). There was no significant difference in prevalence of dysmenorrhea among groups. We found a mild positive correlation between hours of training per week and intensity of...
Consequences of injuries on stability in ballet
Foltmanová, Kateřina ; Bunc, Václav (advisor) ; Kubový, Petr (referee)
Title: Consequences of injuries on stability in ballet Objectives: The main aim of the study was to find out if injuries in the ankle and foot have a negative impact on dancers' postural stability. If so then the secondary objective of this study was to see if the injury of one leg affects also the stability of the other in a one-leg stand. Methods: First part of this thesis is a systematic review. The other part is quantitative research in a prospective, cross-sectional design study. Stabilometric data from all 24 female subjects were analysed and injured and uninjured dancers were compared. The data were measured by a FootScan pressure plate (RSscan International, Belgium). Tested positions were bipodalic stance with eyes opened and closed, bipodalic calf raise (relevé) and monopodalic stance on both legs. Results: The aims of the thesis have been fulfilled but both the hypothesis have been rejected. The results have shown better stability in injured dancers to non-injured dancers in three parameters - Total Travel Way of the centre of pressure (COP) in monopodalic stance on the right foot, mediolateral movement of COP in bipodalic stance with eyes opened and calf rise (relevé). No significant differences have been shown between dancers with one leg previously injured and the non-injured ones in...
Lower extremity musculoskeletal problems in ballet dancers
Matějková, Michaela ; Bitnar, Petr (advisor) ; Demeková, Júlia (referee)
Classical balet may be, in terms of its difficulty, compared to professional athletic disciplines. The inumerous repetitive movements balet consists of require both precision and fluidity, placing the dancer's musculoskeletal system under great amounts of pressure. The theoretical part of the paper focuses on the musculoskeletal problems of lower extremities that represent the majority of those that professional balet dancers cope with during the course of their careers. It further contains information about the causes of such injuries, their treatment, and methods of preventing their occurence. The paper also presents the results of the influence of targeted training with closed eyes on the postural stability of a professional balet dancer. It concludes that this type of training may have positive impact on the dancer's postural stabilization and help in reducing the frequency of injuries.
Possibilities of influencing functional movement disorders of the locomotive apparatus in ballet girls of 6-20 years of age using physiotherapy inputs.
MUNDUCHOVÁ, Andrea
As highly trained individuals, ballet dancers deal with demanding dance training and specific positions which require special skills and may not be performed properly. This often results in imbalances and their further development, potentially leading to injuries. Due to highly demanding performance of this sport, they are forced to end their careers at a young age. Not only for this reason, regeneration and compensation tools use should be integrated in both their ballet and everyday lives. The goals of this bachelor thesis involve evaluation of the strict ballet posture in specific ballet positions regarding the physiological body posture, evaluation of most common imbalances in ballet dancers and a proposal of several kinesiotherapy and physiotherapy methods to prevent disbalance development. The theoretical part of the thesis includes basic information on ballet and ballet dancer requirements. Rules of the ballet body posture in comparison to the physiological body posture are then described. The thesis further involves basic anatomy description of the spine and upper and lower limbs, supplemented with most common imbalances in these parts and therapy possibilities. In the practical part, the method involves a qualitative research of three individuals, each of them of a different age and a different time they have practiced the ballet. All three subjects have shown signs of locomotive apparatus imbalances. The resulting information have been analysed with concern to the initial and final assessments, description of applied therapies and a rehabilitation plan proposal. The research has shown that a well-applied, regularly-performed exercise affects ballet-induced difficulties positively. The thesis can be used by ballet dancers to prevent potential injuries caused by classical ballet performance and to realise the differences between classical ballet rules and human body physiology.
The influence of ankle strength on injury prevention in ballet
Foltmanová, Kateřina ; Bunc, Václav (advisor) ; Baláš, Jiří (referee)
Title: The influence of ankle strength on injury prevention in ballet Objectives: The main aim of the study was to find out if injuries in the ankle area have a negative impact on later ankle strength and also if greater ankle strength can lower the probability of ankle injuries in ballet dancers. A secondary objective of this study was to set a limit for ankle strength needed for a safe start on pointe. Methods: First part of this thesis is a systematic review. The other part is a quantitative research in a retrospective, cross-sectional study design. Data from all 24 subjects was analyzed and injured and uninjured dancers were compared. The data was measured at two angular velocities 30 d/s and 180 d/s. Results: The results showed, that the prevention of injury does not depend on the level of minimal ankle strength but on the equal strength of both legs. Therefore the limit for a safe start on pointe was not set. Great plantar flexion deficit differences between the injured and uninjured group of dancers are the main finding in this study. The lowest value of plantar flexion strength has been found in uninjured ankles of injured dancers. Injured dancers had in general lower strength in ankle plantar flexion on the right foot. Injured dancers also had smaller differences between plantar flexion...

Uhlířová, Eliška ; Pavlů, Dagmar (advisor) ; Maršáková, Kateřina (referee)
Title: Evaluation of Most Frequent Injuries of Ballet Dancers at Ballet Conservatoire Problem specification: Dancers represent highly trained athletes exposed to injuries with limited careers in terms of their age. Therefore application of good quality regeneration and compensation methods as prevention to most of their injuries is very important. Objective: The aim of this diploma thesis is to determine injuries suffered by ballet students at the Ballet Conservatoire in Prague. The evaluation of the most frequent injuries is based on an analysis of anonymous non-standardized questionnaires. The other goal is to determine the level of regeneration and compensation for students of the Ballet Conservatoire in Prague. The intention of the research is to apply findings of the thesis in prevention of potential injuries in ballet in the future. Methods: The theoretical part of the thesis draws some information from local but mostly foreign sources. For the research a method called anonymous non-standardized questionnaire has been applied in order to analyse the most frequent injuries suffered in ballet. The other source has been interviews with ballet students of eight grades at the Ballet Conservatoire in Prague from 11 to 20 years of age to establish the level of their current regeneration and...
