Cyberbullying and its correlation with gender
Klímová, Kateřina ; Wolák, Radim (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the issue of cyberbullying and it examines the differences in its perception depending on gender. In the beginning the thesis describes transformation of communication based upon time and technologies used to communicate. It is followed by the comparison of cyberbullying and bullying where similarities and differences are shown. After this theoretical part comes the practical part of the thesis which is started by the justification of the chosen research method - qualitative research, individual interviews with grammar school children in the age 10 to 15 years. The following part describes the construction of the research - creating the scenario of the interviews followed by the description of the interviews which were afterward transcribed and analyzed. The interviews were analyzed by open coding and showed that there are differences regarding cyberbullying and gender but they also showed that there are similarities in the usage of communication media. The results proved that in the selected sample of children girls are more likely to take part in cyberbullying than in bullying. The results also showed that girls are more likely to share more personal information and photos on the internet than boys although we can observe that this is starting to change because boys are...
Characteristic differences in expected, accpected and offered social support between men and women in romantic relationships
Lacka, Jiří ; Štětovská, Iva (advisor) ; Šulová, Lenka (referee)
The aim of the study was to determine the characteristics of gender differences in the anticipated and received social support in long-term heterosexual relationships. The author first created the theoretical basis for the issue of social support for subsequent empirical part. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve adult respondents and on their basis was performed a qualitative analysis of the data. Interpretation of the data suggests that women and men were very similar in anticipated and received social support. The results were discussed in the light of studies on social support in relationships and gender differences. Keywords: Gender, gender differences, health psychology, heterosexual relationships, qualitative research, romantic relationships, social support.
Differences in Competitiveness at a Young Age: An Experiment
Kolda, Martin ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Cingl, Lubomír (referee)
In current world we can observe a substantial gender gap in the labor market as women tend to earn considerably less than men. One of the possible explanations of the wage gap might be the gap in the competitivness. Recent experimental economic literature has shown that there are differences between men and women in the preference to compete. In this study I explore competitiveness among children from the Czech Republic. Using a field experiment with a real task, I found that both boys and girls react to the competitive environment, but boys do compete significantly more than girls indicating a presence of the gender gap. On the contrary, age, number of siblings and activities, and education of parents do not affect the performance under competitive scheme.
Socio-Pathological Phenomena at Secondary Vocational School and Their Possible Solution
Vlková, Kateřina ; Lorenzová, Jitka (advisor) ; Chrdlová, Michaela (referee)
This diploma work named Socio-Pathological Phenomena at Secondary Vocational School and Their Possible Solution deals, in its theoretical part, with the basic terminology related with this topic. It also focuses on the risk behaviour among today's young people, and briefly introduces socio-pathological phenomena which occured at the surveyed secondary school in the last two years. It also describes other kinds of contemporary risk behaviour among young generation. At the end of theoretical part, there are introduced some of the current trends in school prevention and solution of socio-pathological phenomena. Period of adolescence is of course closely associated with this topic. It's called critical stage, and all the students pass this period during their secondary school attendance. That's why the chapter devoted to adolescence is elaborated in full details. Gender differences concerning appearance and intensity of socio-pathological phenomena are also mentioned here. Next, there is explained the system of primary prevention in The Czech Republic, the importace of family and school background, the impact of peers on personality development. In empirical part of this diploma work, there is introduced Secondary Vocational School, Ltd., 844 Schulhoffova, in Prague 4. The research probe was realized...
Gender differences in computer world and their consequences for players of MMORPG games
Tůmová, Terézia ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Buchtík, Martin (referee)
The text deals with gender differences in MMORPG games. They are studied in four areas: historical evolution, game development job market, gender differences of avatars and players in virtual reality, and the impact of these differences on the actual reality of players. By combining these areas the author strives to achieve a complex view of gender differences in a computer world. The game world and the real world join to create the computer world in which players and game developers are the bridge between those two worlds. The first two parts of the text deal with computer games in general while the following parts deal specifically with MMORPG games. Above all, the research observes the narative and graphical portrayal of female characters in game environment. This portrayal is analysed from the point of view of gender consequences.
The most common knee injury in volleyball
Přádová, Kateřina ; Crhonková, Radka (advisor) ; Čech, Zdeněk (referee)
A knee is the most complicated joint in our body. It is commonly injured during volleyball, mainly resulting as a knee pain syndrome or an acute rupture of an anterior cruciate ligament. In its theoretical part this bachelor thesis gives an overview of basic anatomy and biomechanics of the knee joint, it deals with the gender differences in morfology and neurophysiology and it contains a chapter dealing with biomechanics of the knee joint in volleyball. The second part of this bachelor thesis is a research study searching for the most common knee injury in volleyball, comparing differences among men and women and comparing differences between indoor and beach volleyball. The most quoted injury of the knee joint was the injury of the ligament, but as the most serious and the most common injury players named an overuse injury. We didn't manage to compare an incidence in indoor and beach volleyball due to the lack of data. We didn't find a significant difference in the incidence and a character of injuries among men and women.
Differential reactivity of the longitudinal and circular muscle of the rat distal colon
Kubíčková, Růžena ; Vokřál, Ivan (advisor) ; Říha, Michal (referee)
(en) Charles University in Prague Faculty of Pharmacy Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacology  Toxicology Student: Růžena Kubíčková Supervisors: Prof. Manuela Morato PharmDr. Ivan Vokřál, PhD. Title of diploma thesis: Differential reactivity of the longitudinal and circular muscle of the rat distal colon Physiological regulation of the function of the large intestine is neurohumoral. The neural part of this regulation implies the vegetative nervous system, which is crucial for the control of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) motility. Concerning the humoral part of the regulation, recent studies showed that angiotensin II (Ang II) causes contraction of the colonic smooth muscle and, thus, can also influence the motility of the colon. However, there are no known studies that have described this process in detail. The aims of this work were (1) to compare the reactivity of the longitudinal and circular muscles of the rat distal colon to potassium chloride (KCl), acetylcholine (ACh) and Ang II, (2) to compare the observed results between male and female rats, and (3) to characterize the receptors mediating the response to Ang II. For purpose of the project, adult, 10-12 weeks old Wistar Han rats of both genders were used. Strips of the the rat distal colon were mounted in organ baths along their...
Ischemia-reperfusion injury in lungs after transplantation and the role of radical oxygen species
Mrázková, Hana ; Lischke, Robert (advisor) ; Třeška, Vladislav (referee) ; Kittnar, Otomar (referee)
 Keywords: Lung Tx, EVLP, NHBD, IR injury, ROS, hypercapnia, gender differences This dissertation thesis deals with a very topical issue of the lack of donor organs for lung transplants. As with other organs, the number of patients on waiting lists in terminal stages of their diseases is also constantly rising but there is not an adequate increase in donor organs. We focused our experimental work on the development of research concerning the solution which is most successful in a long-term perspective, i.e. organ transplants from non- heart-beating donors (NHBDs), in an ex vivo lung transplant protocol (EVLP) on an animal model (Wistar rats). This is a method which is clinically established worldwide (in the Czech Republic only experimentally) and is constantly subject to further research. Based on earlier studies, we focused the first experimental part of this work on the potential protective effect of hypercapnic ventilation on ischemia-reperfusion (IR) lung injury in EVLP. The study proved that the hypercapnic ventilation has a protective effect on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in IR lung injury, but only when used in the period of reperfusion. In the second experimental study, we followed up a very topical issue of the effect of gender on IR lung injury in EVLP in...
Children left behind: self-confidence of pupils in competitive environments
Federičová, Miroslava ; Pertold, Filip ; Smith, Michael
Early-tracking systems naturally divide many classes of 11 years old students into two groups:\nstudents preparing for exams to enter better schools and everyone else, who decide not to compete for selective schools. Utilizing TIMSS data and a follow-up study in the Czech Republic, which has an early-tracking system similar to other European states following the German model, we show that this environment has a detrimental effect on the self-confidence of pupils in mathematics who do not apply for selective schools but have peers in their classroom who do apply. In particular, we show that girls who do not apply for selective schools experience a 11% drop in confidence in mathematics if they have four applicants among classmates and this effect is even larger if the applicants are successful in the admission process. We focus on self-confidence in mathematics as an outcome variable because the literature suggests it is directly linked to pupils' motivation to study STEM fields as well as subsequent educational achievement. Our results suggest that the decrease in selfconfidence among girls is long lasting and implies that gender gaps in self-confidence can be a result of the competitive environment of the educational system.
