The Media as a Theme in the Arts Across the History of the Czech Media
Ježková, Tereza ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Jiroušek, Bohumil (referee) ; Vojtěchovský, Miroslav (referee)
Like newspapers, books, cinema or music, fine art is a medium of human communication, and the carrier of a message. Its role as a specific means of communication has transformed throughout history, along with the role of mass media. Before the rise of mass communications across all of society, this function was to some degree facilitated by works of art. A work of art is itself a medium of communication, while at the same time it can also represent other media - in various stages of the evolution of arts and culture the mass media themselves became the subject of art. This can be defined as the meta-communication of one medium with another. The present dissertation focuses on the research and work of Czech artists engaged with visualizing the means of mass-media communication (periodicals, radio, television) and its actors (the recipients and producers of media content). The relevant works of art for this thesis (paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures) are the focus of a qualitative analysis resulting in an overview of the evolution of this subject matter since the advent of mass media, i.e., from the emergence of the first printed periodicals to the 1960s. My dissertation The Media as a Theme in the Arts Across the History of the Czech Media approaches the topic as historical research viewed...
Ethical Codes in the present Czech media system
Horáčková, Anna ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
Master's Thesis focuses on current position of ethics in the Czech media. The main subject is the code of ethics (or code of conduct). The first part of the thesis offers a theoretical background of the topic. I am pursuing the terminology referred to the media ethics topic. Together with scholarly resources I provide definitions of terms such as ethics, morality and code of ethics in media. Summary of relevant Czech codes of conduct is essential for this thesis. First, I present the codes in a brief list and table, more detailed analysis follows. The focus is on differences and specification of each of them. After that I present an analysis of ethical rules valid in foreign countries - European states and the United States in particular. Theoretical part is followed by practical part of the thesis. It is based on interviews with experts which are semi- anonymous and semi-structured. I interview eight employees of Czech media after formulating several hypotheses. I chose experts who have been working in media for many years - mainly chief editors or top managers in press, TV, radio or online media. One of the most important chapters is the confirmation or refutation of the stated hypotheses. Based on the conclusion of the interviews, I create a universal code of ethics that might be applicable on...

The role of embedded journalism in reporting on Medecins Sans Frontieres missions
Nguyenová, Thuong Ly ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Láb, Filip (referee)
Médecins Sans Frontières is one of the most respected humanitarian organisations in the world, they focus mainly on providing medical care in places of emergency and war. These places are also interesting for journalists who can take advantage of the protection on the missions while also acquiring unique stories. Working in conflicted areas under a protection of an organisation is called embedded journalism. This concept has been until now studied in connection with army when journalists travel with soldiers. Therefore, their view of war can be distorted. However, a journalist who travels with Médecins Sans Frontières may also have a distorted view of world. Twelve journalists from around the world, who visited the missions and documented the work of doctors, gave interviews for this diploma thesis. In the interviews, they described their experiences, the advantages and disadvantages of being embedded, and how the organisation may have influenced their work. Several Médecins Sans Frontières workers have also shared their experience. The interviews were put in context by a content analysis that focused on the articles and photographs made on missions by these journalists.
Ethically controversional aspects of journalistic work when working with social networks, situation in Czech Republic in comparison with United Kingdom
Mačí, Josef ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the change of social behavior and journalistic production caused by the digitization and convergence with focus on the social media. The paper will discuss the issue of privacy that is undergoing redefinition, because of the amount of private information which we publicly publish on social media (my center of interest are two most common social media - Facebook and Twitter). Social networks and digitization in general have changed journalistic production. Journalists must be able to produce all types of journalistic content - text writing, photograph, shooting video and working in the post- production, as part of multiskilling. Moreover, each part of the process has to be compatible with the framework of professional ethics, which is still under development in terms of new technologies, including social media. At the same time, journalists must work to promote themselves through social networks and to build their own devoted audience. The bachelor thesis will deal with the comparison of code of conducts in the Czech Republic and in the UK in the case studies. It aims to find differences between the two countries in terms of approach to the social media. I also compare case studies of Czech journalists and their daily work with social networks in three periods (the...
A journalist as a politician - case study of Martin Komárek
Davidová, Adéla ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the process of transition of professional journalists into active policy. By exploring a particular journalist, it tries to reach a general conclusion on what motivates journalists to become politics. The subject of the thesis is to place this phenomenon in the context of journalistic ethics and to find answers to whether it is possible to practice both professions at the same time - eventually in what form. The thesis is methodologically conducted as a case study and combines a thorough interview with content analysis. Martin Komárek, the main actor of case studies, has been a long-standing commentary of Mladá fronta, later Mladá fronta DNES. In 2013, he decided to leave the media and became a member of the political movement ANO 2011 founded by billionaire Andrej Babiš. It was Martin Komárek who criticized Babiš several times in his texts as a reporter. His change of opinion on Andrej Babiš was therefore a great surprise. Further examples of five selected journalists who made a similar decision as Martin Komárek did and entered into politics are given in the third part of the thesis.
Well-known political causes in the world of film
Škoda, Jan ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
This bachelor work deals with the problematics of well-known politics causes in the world of world - cinema. The theme is linked to the journalism and tries to define why the tales of journalists and their search for truth attract filmmakers worldwide. The first part of this work is about the possibilities of adaptations, genre definitions and fictional worlds of well-known politics causes. The second part of the work focuses of two examples of adaptating real pollitical affairs into moving pictures. The first one is called All the President's Men and it was shot in 1976. It represents the most famous movie about so-called Watergate scandal which ended in resignation of American president Richard Nixon. This bachelor work focuses on film reactions and the portrayal of journalism in this movie including some rather problematic aspects. The second part of this work focuses on movie called Snowden, which also includes journalists, but their characters are kind of suppressed. The 2016's film follows the story of whistleblower who revealed massive surveillance by American government. This work includes citation of journalist to whom Snowden revealed his accusations. There is also an interview with Snowden director Oliver Stone. The work in fine nuances compares two specific approaches to the adaptation...
Social media's influence on journalism
Vosátková, Lenka ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
This Master's thesis entitled "Social Media's Influence on Journalism" focuses on the effects new communication technologies, especially social media, has on journalist's. These effects are examined in regard to four major aspects of journalism - the individual, journalistic routine, work with information sources and ethical standards. The theoretical frame focuses on current trends in media, specifically social media, and the routines of journalists with a main focus on newsgathering and sorting of news. This has been strongly linked to gatekeeping theory. Qualitative research was conducted using Semi-structured in-depth interviews to answer research questions. Seven journalists, representing various facets of journalism, from a number of Czech daily newspapers were interviewed. The interviews were divided into four main parts to find out which social media platforms are used, how social media has changed routines, how social media is used as a source of information and how ethical standards may have changed. Open and axial coding was used to analyse the data obtained from the interviews. Results showed that journalists utilise social media at work on a daily basis and it has become an integral part of their routines. The main platforms used are Facebook, especially to find and connect sources,...
