Book in the Preschooler's family

1 Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the role of a book in a preschool child's family. The aim of the theoretical part is to point out the importance of a book reading to a pre-school child in a family and also to point out the importance of books, the position of children's literature in the multimedia world. The theoretical part also deals with the description of different kinds of books a child of this age may encounter and also with the demands on children's literature. Practical part deals with the interpretation of data gained through research lead in a form of half-structured interviews of a parent with a pre-school-age child. The survey observes books in a family in three areas: Book and the parent's own childhood, Current situation in adulthood and Current situation with the parent's own child. Emphasis is put especially on the situation with the parent's own child focused on the work with a book as a means of education, on the child's interest in books and reading, on the child's and parent's book choice and their library attendance. Bibliotherapy in the environment of public libraries

This thesis aims to introduce the notion of bibliotherapy and its application in public library environment. The text is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part, the notion of bibliotherapy itself is introduced, together with questions of who is engaged in this field, as well as the effects of reading. There are presented several book titles which belong to bibliotherapeutic literature. The substantial part of the thesis is then built on specific examples of bibliotherapy practiced in public libraries in the Czech Republic, as well as abroad. The practical part features first an interview with Mrs Marcela Kořínková who actively engages in bibliotherapy; second, there is a proposal of implementation of a bibliotherapeutic department in an imaginary public library, and last, there is a research presenting the wide public's awareness of, and interest in the field of bibliotherapy.

The support of the childrens' reading in the Czech Republic and German speaking countries

The diploma thesis concentrates on the children's reading issues, and compares the approach to its support in the Czech Republic and the German speaking countries. The introductory part is devoted to the current children's reading, the factors that influence it, and reading interests of today's children. It also evaluates the contemporary Czech children's literature and its publishers. The following two chapters describe the activities for the children's reading support that are developed by Czech libraries and non-librarian entities. The next part introduces the projects for the children's reading support implemented in Austria and Germany; it also shortly describes the programs of other German speaking countries. The sixth chapter briefly outlines the subject matter of the children's reading support in both Czech and foreign media. There are two surveys attached to the thesis. The first compares the activities of selected Czech and foreign libraries, and their contribution to the children's reading support. The second survey, implemented among the children readers of the Central Library of the Municipal Library in Prague, evaluates the children's satisfaction with the offered thematic discussions for the school classes. Reading and its Importance in Elementary School

The presented diploma thesis deals with the theme of reading and its role in the educational process. The thesis is divided into two parts, the theoretical one and the practical one. The theoretical part deals with the issue of literacy, concepts of reading, reader and the factors which can influence young readers. The practical part contains an evaluation of questionnaire about reading and popularity of books at secondary schools. It also describes the thematic plan of literary education, the effort to prepare and motivate students to required reading.

Support of Reading in the Municipal Library Branches in Prague

(in English) The thesis deals with a support of reading with aim effort to offered service, organizing cultural and educational actions in the Municipal Library of Prague. The first part solves theoretical definition and the meaning of reading. There are briefly explained some terms that relate to - reading, the reader, reading socialization, reading literacy, etc. Factors that influence reading process and education for reading are monitored, as well. Furthermore, national representative projects supporting reading primarily in libraries are presented at my work, too. The second part of my work is focused on the Municipal Library of Prague and its role in supporting reading. It describes the library from the view of its mission, the way of financing (funding) and organization structure. The essential part pays attention to the presentation of specialized sections and services, which are provided in the library. It describes different actions supporting reading or providing propagation of the library. Last but not least, the different sections of the Municipal Library of Prague are depicted here with attention to organizing cultural and educational actions, which contributes to supporting reading. Violencia and social issues in Colombian children's literature

This dissertation focuses on a critical approach to Latin-American children's literature, its evolution and its particular issues. It is based on the analysis of Colombian realistic fiction for children and young adults. The aim of this work is to show how Colombian children's literature has established some particular features that make it distinguished in Latin-American children's literature. The methodology is based on literary studies along with specifications of children's literature theory in perspective with the Colombian political and social situation during the twentieth century. The dissertation adresses elements from literary analysis: The narratology (V. Propp, and G. Gennette) the literary criticism (M. Bakhtin, and the concept of ideology) plus cultural studies in Latin America (Á. Rama). The research takes theoretical concepts from children's literature, related to pedagogy (T. Colomer), aesthetics (M. Nikolajeva), ideology (P. Hollindale) and historiography of children's literature in Latin America: A. Rodriguez, 1993, 2010; M. Muñoz, 2009; B. Robledo 1997, 2012 & L. Classic and authorial fairy tale in kindergarten

Aim: My thesis shall reveal which form of fairy-tales is the favourite one for preschool children. My effort is to find out which styles of fairy tales children return to. Solution: I applied qualitative method of interviewing children about the read fairy-tale for my survey. Continually, I used the method of participant observation while monitoring the interest in artwork contained in books. Subsequently, children selected the favourite books. The method of participant observation was applied again in this part. Results: Through the realized survey, I found that a classic fairy-tale is an unsubstitutable element in children development. However, it must be presented in such a language form which is comprehensible for children. Illustrations accompanying the story are very useful. Author's fairy-tale affects children very significantly so it is necessary to choose topics of appropriate quality. Both types of fairy-tales are indispensable factors for proper development of intellectual, emotional and ethical part of child's character and they are interesting and stimulating for children. Benefits of the thesis: The results of the thesis allow organizing and realizing activities in nurseries in a way that is suitable and valuable for children. It shows the way how to handle the fairy-tale genre within education for preschool children.

The Implementation of Reading Workshop at the Primary School

This thesis deals with the inclusion of the reading workshop methods in the primary schools and its application to the lessons of the Czech language and literature. The main aim of the theoretical part is to define key concepts connected with the topic. It describes the definitions of the reading workshop, the reading literacy and the description of "The formal notice no. 56", which has been focused on the support of the development of reading in the Czech schools. In this part the particular educational methods, which are focused on the development of reading, and the Czech and international researches are characterized. The practical part of the thesis, using the qualitative surveys, appraises the preparation and the realization of the project "The formal notice no. 56" at the particular primary school. There were realized the interviews with the educators and the head master. The assets and negative features of the reading workshop were followed by those dialogues. According to the direct observation of the methods during the lessons of the Czech language and literature, there were recorded the reactions of pupils to the reading and working with a text. In the practical part there are also the characteristics of the materials which were created under the project in the school. The purpose of these researches is to find out how the teachers as well as the schoolchildren react to the method and if it brought to the classes any new elements and if it could be still the part of education in the future.

Recommended reading at elementary school

The aim of the diploma thesis Recommended reading at elementary school is to map the current state of suggested readings and work with it in elementary schools in the Czech Republic. The thesis is divided into theoretical part where are elaborated and characterized the basic concepts related to this issue. It is thus focused on the definition of reader, reading literacy, reading and further on is defined the recommended and primer reading. Furthermore, this section offers the methods used to develop literacy skills in Czech language lessons and literature. In the practical parts is intimated the basic research, which was carried out on this subject through a series of interviews with 26 teachers coming from different schools. The research aims to find out the current status of recommended reading at the middle school level, whether it is used by teachers, eventually how they continue to operate with it and use this knowledge for their own teaching practice.
