Use of diminutives in the internet discussions regarding the gender of the speaker

This bachelor thesis compares the use of diminutives among men and women in the computer-mediated communication. It contains a theorethical summary of basic grammatical rules regarding the formation of diminutives, the semantic aspects of their use in an informal language (with emphasis on expressivity) and an overview of the socioliguistic theories within the framework of gender differences. The research section is based on a sociolinguistic study of this particular subject. The aim is to find the most significant differences of the word choices and the frequency of use of diminutives of men and women and possibly a reason for it. Building a Specialised Corpus of Banatian Czech with a Linguistic Analysis of Selected Features

The purpose of this thesis was to build a specialised corpus of Banatian Czech. The theoretical section describes the historical and language situation in the Banat area focusing on its development since the 1990s to the present day. This is followed by a presentation and description of specialised corpora focusing on a corpus of spoken Czech. Building a specialised corpus named BANAT is documented in detail (method of collection, processing and transcription of records, building of corpora and publishing). The analysis of possessive pronouns, negative pronouns and adverbs and enclitics confirms a statistically significant difference between Banatian Czech and the present state of Czech language (in all observed phenomena except enclitics). Tagging a spoken learner corpus

The aim of the thesis is to propose a tagging system for a learner corpus of spoken English which would, apart from tagging errors, focus also on the features specific for spoken language. Theoretical part, therefore, introduces basic concepts including learner language, the development of learner corpora in the last 20 years and both classical and computer-aided error analysis. Features typical of spoken language are described in the theoretical part as well since these are the focus of the research part of the thesis. The Louvain tagging system used for error-tagging of a leaner corpus of written language is used as the basis for the tagging system proposed in this thesis. Based on the analysis of 20 transcriptions taken from the Czech part of spoken learner corpus LINDSEI, modifications of the categories taken from the Louvain error-tagging system are proposed and new categories necessary for a better description of spoken language are introduced. The tagging system proposed in this thesis should make further analysis of the tagged corpus easier.
Standard Language with Regard to Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

The dissertation analyses the stratification of Czech in terms of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The general theoretical part relates to teaching Czech as a foreign language or other foreign languages as close as possible. This part also includes the analysis of recordings of authentic communication between Czech speakers and foreigners. The findings of the analysis are subsequently applied to the sample plans of teaching units. The introductory part deals with the history and development of the theory of the standard Czech language and it also presents the attitudes held by the members of the Prague Linguistic Circle, which were published in Spisovná čeština a jazyková kultura (Czech Literary Language and Culture) in 1932. The theoretical part reflects the issue of defining the standard, mentions diglossia and presents a variety of contemporary opinions on future trends in the development of codification. In accordance with its aim, the paper lists the recommendations of benchmark descriptions for Czech as a foreign language and also describes so called Foreigner Talk, including the way foreigners are spoken to by the speakers of Czech. The use of 'dan' and 'als' in comparisons: after the positive and comparative in the written and spoken language.

In this bachelor thesis the problematics of usage of two conjunctions "dan" and "als" will be investigated. In de first chapter the grammar rules regarding the use of the above-stated conjuctions in comparative construction will be defined. Subsequently, in the second chapter the research survey on the usage of comparative conjunctions by the native speakers will be introduced. The final results of the survey will be presented and put in the context with the theoretical side of the problematics. This thesis has as general objective to explore and define the differences between the use of "dan" and "als" according to the grammar rules of Dutch and in actual usage by native speakers. Analysis of the Czech translation of Yuri Vynnychuk's collection of short stories Chachacha

This diploma thesis Analysis of the Czech translation of Yuri Vynnychuk's collection of short stories Chachacha is devoted to the analysis of translation solutions of selected linguistic features in two short stories - Chachacha and Kulparkiv, aneb Chachacha 2. The goal of this work is to assess translation methods of Rita Kindlerová, describe its possible positives and negatives. Introductory chapters deal with the biography of Yuri Vynnychuk, his classification in a literal context, general characteristics of his work and consequently the stylistic analysis of two excerpted texts. An integral part of the work is definition of theoretical base for translatological analysis. Main parts of the work are focused on the analysis of translation of specific linguistic features, which are the stylistic dominants of selected texts: stylization of speech, style differentiation, phraseme and selected culture- specific items with an emphasis on proper nouns.
Systeme of relative pronouns in spoken French

The relative pronoun system in spoken French represents an aspect of the French language that didn't receive appropriate attention by the scientific community until the second half of the 20th century. The aim of this work is to explore the system of relative clauses and related subordinate strategies in spoken variant of the French language, confronting it with its normative variant, as well as to explain causes of the existence of this diasystemism in French relative subordination. The main part of this work is a research based on testing representative non-normative constructions on internet forums and via a questionnaire. The results illustrate tendencies and the rate of acceptability of non-normative subordinate strategies using complementizer across the French speaking society, and thus contribute to a better understanding of this aspect of the French language.
A contrastive study of hyperbole in Czech and English. A corpus-based study

The aim of this study is to compare and contrast the use of hyperbole or exaggeration in spoken Czech and English language. The research is based on comparative approach to two samples accounting for 100 hyperbolic instances in Czech and 100 instances of hyperbole in English. The Czech sample has been randomly excerpted from the oral part of the Czech National Corpus ORAL2008, whereas the English sample has been randomly excerpted from the "spoken context-govern" and "spoken demographic" sections of The British National Corpus. The two samples are subject to analysis. Firstly, the formal realization of hyperbole is examined. Secondly, the occurrences are classified semantically (quantitative versus qualitative hyperbole) and, thirdly, the lexico-semantics is examined (hyperbolic source domains). By this, the present study tests the hypothesis of universal hyperbolic source domains by examining the situation in Czech and English. Finally, the occurrence of conventionalized instances of hyperbole as opposed to creative instances of hyperbolic nonce-usages is examined. Last but not least, it is the aim of this study to provide the overall frequency figures of hyperbole in both languages.
Some Notes on Breaking German Word-Formation Rules in the Language of Advertising

In this thesis has been considered that the language of advertising should be viewed as an autonomous functional style due to its unique formulations. Existing literature which is concerned with the language of German advertising or advertising in general provides to this subject ambiguous information. My goal was to compare interpretations of different authors and on the strength of my own collection of examples to assess if the language of advertising is an autonomous functional style. This work focuses on breaking German word-formation rules especially on elements of spoken language, occasionalismus and comparison of adjectives. It was considered the function of the language of advertising as well which hangs nearly together with the choice of expressions. The function turned out to be the decisive argument by setting of the functional style.
