Tar sands exploitation in the Alberta Province, Canada and its environmental impact
Šídová, Kateřina ; Opluštil, Stanislav (advisor) ; Pešek, Jiří (referee)
This thesis provides an overview about the tar sands exploitation in the province of Alberta, Canada and environmental impacts related to their exploitation. Canadian's tar sands deposits represent the 3rd largest crude oil reserve in the world. The economically recoverable reserves were estimated to 168, 7 billion barrels. The introductory part of the thesis explains process of oil formation, including a theory about the tar sands deposits formation. The main part of the thesis describes four most significant tar sands deposits in the Alberta province which differ in physical-chemical properties of extracted crude oil (eg. specific gravity) but also in geology of their deposits. Differences in geological setting require individual approach to extraction of particular deposits. The most common exploitation methods are described. Among them, the surface mining results are the most apparent exploitation impact on a landscape and therefore the major environmental problems are presented through it.

The coal-forming environments
Šulcová, Jana ; Opluštil, Stanislav (advisor) ; Pešek, Jiří (referee)
The coal is a caustobiolith, which originates by biochemical transformation of plant biomass and its subsequent diagenesis under increased temperature, pressure and time. Coal occurs in a form of a layer, which is called a seam. A peat is an early stage of coal, which is formed by anaerobic decomposition of plant biomass accumulated in peatlands. Peatlands consist important subgroup of wetlands, where low oxygen content and water logging are important pre-requisites for their formation. The term peatlands has different meanings in various scientific disciplines and countries and so there is wide range of terms describing wetlands and peatlands. We don't exactly know the global distribution of peatlands, but the estimate is about 386 - 409 mil. ha. The hydrology is one of the main factors, which determine type of peatlands. We can distinguish two main types - ombrotrophic mires, which are fed by precipitation and rheotrophic mires, which are fed by groundwater (besides precipitation). During development peatlands can switch from rheotrophic state to ombrotrophic state. Two areas in the province Riau in Sumatra were chosen for a comparison. Siak Kanan is on the coast and Bengkalis Island, which represents the peat on the island. Final analysis of samples taken from peatlands show no significant...
Sulphur in coals
Portová, Nikol ; Opluštil, Stanislav (advisor) ; Pešek, Jiří (referee)
Bachelor thesis discusses briefly the nature and chemical composition of coal, summarizes detailed knowledge about the forms and origin of sulfur in caustobiolith. It outlines the methods of determining the content of this element in coal caustobiolith series and mentions the legislation dealing with the sulfur content in fuels. Detail is devoted to an overview of the most important coal mining areas of the Czech Republic with an emphasis on coal basin, which are of significant environmental burdens than coal basin. All it will report on the sulfur content measured in each of their major uhlonosných horizons. The importace of monitoring sulphur in caustobiolits results from the environmental hazard both in areas of intensive mining, which is mostly applied more factors having an impact on landscaping, and in areas where there is use of fossil fuels for heating and energy. In doing so leads to the release of sulphur compounds and their redistribution in the environment and thus to increase the influence of sulphur on biological processes. Rapprochement from below? German-French town twinning from 1950 to 2000
Filipová, Lucie ; Pešek, Jiří (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee) ; Ledvinka, Václav (referee)
The dissertation Rapprochement from below? German-French town twinning from 1950 to 2000 is a historiographic study that focuses on town twinning as a specific aspect of German-French co-operation in the second half of the 20th century. The topic is analysed in a wider German-French context and based on statistical data as well as archive sources. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of high-level bilateral relations on German-French town twinning, identify the motivation of its supporters and compare German-French town twinning in the West-German and East-German federal states. Additionally, the localisation of town twins was studied for the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Migration waves in the Federal Republic of Germany between northern and southern states post 1989
Hamplová, Martina ; Pešek, Jiří (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
The rigorous thesis "Migration waves in the Federal Republic of Germany between northern and southern states post 1989" deals with internal migration and focuses on the citizens of Germany and their movement within the country after 1989. The main area of focus is the depopulation of the northern part of Germany and the related 4 immigration of specific migration groups to one of both southern German states. This rigorous thesis surveys the migration streams in this territory for the period between 1990 and 2008 and analyzes their influence on the demographic changes and transformations of the local socio- economic structure. In the theoretical section, the appropriate basic terms relating to the area of migration research are explained. A concrete survey of migration streams between northern and southern Gemany is introduced in two case studies. The first deals with the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Using this example, the problems of depopulation in the north of Germany are discussed. Whilst considering the importance of these problems, the consequences of migration for this state and the attitude of the local policy surrounding this issue are described. Representative of the southern part of Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg is introduced whose population has been growing...

The thesis "The book printers Jiří Jakubův Dačický and Jan Othmar Jakubův Dačický" deals with the lives and printing activities of the named book printers, who worked in the Old Town in Prague at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. The thesis is based on the primary and secondary sources and preserved old prints from their production. The first one deals with the careers of the named printers and with the analysis of their private and professional lives. The second part interests in their printing production. The prints were divided into thematic groups and described according to literary-historical and library scientifical aspects. The studied prints were examined in their relationship to their previous and subsequent publications by other printers, too. The third part is the typological- typographical analysis. Here the autor focuses on typographical form of the prints, used typesetting, decorating, etc. The aim was not only to register used typographical material of the studied printers in time, but also to find out how much these (and possibly other contemporary) printing works cooperated,...
