February 1948 in the Presidential office

The aim of this thesis is not to describe again what happened in Czechoslovakia in February 1948, but to present the role of the Presidential office in that political crisis and the role of president Edvard Beneš himself - how much power he had and what could he really do to solve the crisis of that time. After the short introduction to the situation, which led us to the end of the Second World War, follows the presentation of the Presidential office with its departments and employees, who worked there and later published their memories about February 1948. The most important was the presidential chancelor Jaromír Smutný, who worked for a short time for the next president Klement Gottwald as well, and after that he escaped abroad. Their memoirs will be compared with the memoirs of other political icons of that time. Memories wrote nacional socialists Huber Ripka, Prokop Drtina and Ota Hora, communist Bed ich Rattinger was writing a diary in February 1948, the situation in the Presidential office described Jaromír Smutný, Miroslav Jirásek and František Škarvan. The other persons, who are important as well, are ambassador Eduard Táborský, Swedisch friend of Hana and Edvard Beneš Amelie Posse-Brázdová and journalist Ferdinand Peroutka. The aim of this graduation thesis is to document activity of KSC in -' the district of Ustí nad Labem during period between May 1945 and February 1948. When compiling this theme I principally aim for analyzing organizational work of the Communist party, its acting in bodies of local self-govemment, programme and party agitation. By appraising these aspects I pursue answering -' questions, why did the majority of inhabitants living in the district of Ustí nad Labem give its support to communists and how did communists utilize this support in delimited period of time.
The language of communist power on the pages of Rudé právo in 1953

The subject of this work is the style and method of language manipulation on the pages of Rudé právo during the year 1953. This Bachelor's work also strives to outline the basic typological attributes of Communist propaganda. The goal is to point out the role of politics in culture, its transformation after the Communist overthrow, and how this reflected on the newspaper culture. The body of this work can be divided into two parts. The first is separated into three chapters: In the first chapter we will become acquainted with the propaganda problematic. In the second we shall find an analysis of cultural institutions and in the third a treatise of the role of printed media. The latter part of this text focuses on analyzing particular articles from Rudé právo preceded by a brief introduction.
František Štverák, rector of Chvaly - opponent and prisoner of nazism and communism

The aim of my final bachelor thesis is to portray the life of František Štverák (1909-1956), a Czech catholic priest, who actively participated in the resistance against Nazi occupant regime. In spring 1940 he was arrested and interrogated by the gestapo. He experienced various concentration camps (Dachau, Sachsenhausen) surviving numerous life threatening situations under severe conditions. In April 1945 he lived to see the liberation of Dachau by the US army. In autumn that year he witnessed the trial of Nazi criminal from Dachau. After the communist revolution in February 1948 he stood up against the restraint of rights of the catholic Church in Czechoslovakia and its gradual liquidation. As a close collaborator of archbishop Josef Beran he was arrested in June 1949. During the period of custody he went through several communist prisons (Praha-Pankrác, Valdice-Kartouzy, Praha-Ruzyně). In January 1951 František Štverák was sentenced to twenty months in one of the many staged trial of catholic clerks and seculars. After having served his punishment he was held in internment (monasteries Želiv a Hájek) in the years 1951-1954. He was released in 1954 and two years later he died as a result of his long-term imprisonment.

This Bachelor thesis focuses on a life story of Albína Palkosková-Wiesenbergerová (1908-2002), newspaperwoman, writer and a political prisoner of the 1950's. The thesis describes Albína's life based on her written memoirs and confronts these with the archived documents to create an appropriate view of her life. One part of the work focuses on the life style of female political prisoners in communist labor camps.

The period of the emerging identity of Montenegrins against the background of the eastern question

165 ABSTRACT The period between 1848 and 1861 was a time when the identity of Montenegrins started to thrive. However, this thrive was proceeding in connection with the international situation, as the Great Powers of that time cast their eyes upon The Eastern Question as the then problem which, besides enduring friction was also about a collision of different theses that were looking for a solution for both its domestic as well as international policies. This collision finally resulted in the Crimean War, which was the only all-European conflict since The Napoleonic Wars until the World War. Against the background of the events there was a change in ruling in Montenegro. Petr II. Petrović Njegoš, who was the last Vladika, lived in celibacy. His follower Danilo Petrović then succeeded as the prince. In connection with the rise of Principality the central institutions started to be created in Montenegro. This, on one hand, contributed to realization of the common interests, but on the other, these centralizational activities started to rise the tension between the particular Montenegrin tribes and the Prince. Many a time this tension broke out into a conflict which the Prince had to solve by force. In the consequence of these frequent revolts and the rapid centralization, the Prince Danilo I. lost his life....
Process of adoption of the Slovak autonomy law in Slovak and Czech print media dated since October 6th, 1938

The master thesis talk about the progress if events in Slovakia since October 6th until the enactment of the autonomy law in November 1938 mainly through the eyes of the most important slovak and czech newspapers. Based on the printed news the author of this thesis tries to find the paper's stand to the slovak autonomy. A great deal of attention is dedicated to the internal and foreign politics of the Autonomy and its reflection in the print. As for the internal politics, the author looks into the rise of Slovak people's party led by Hlinka and it's attempts to enforce the totality in Slovakia. On the other side the foreign politics puts emphasis on the discussions about area abbandonment with Hungary and Poland. The main goal of the thesis is to point out the essential evolution tendencies of the Slovak autonomy through the eyes of slovak and czech newspapers.
Prokop Drtina (1900-1980). The life of a Czech democrat

This dissertation is dedicated to a very important Czech official and later politician Prokop Drtina, whose life was closely linked with the development of democracy in Czechoslovakia. The main objective of this thesis is to draw the attention to this unique person and to illustrate the history of Czechoslovakia on his life story. He was bom on 13 April 1900 into a prominent Czech family. His father, František Drtina, was a famous philosopher and a close collaborator of Professor Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Drtina's childhood was very inspiring because he grew up surrounded by then Czech intellectual elite. Y oung Prokop Drtina was conducted by his interest in history and politics to a study of the law faculty in Prague. After studying law, Prokop Drtina started his professional career in the Czech Tax Directorate and his public activities date back to the same time. In 1925, he joined the newly established National Labour Party which, however, totally failed and was disbanded after five years of activity. In 1928, he left it and joined the Czechoslovak National Socialist Party where he stayed to the end of his political career. Czechs and Germans in the Polička's Region in the 20th Century: Regional Probe Into Czech-German Coexistence in the Ethnically Mixed District of Polička

Using a method of regional probing, the diploma work seeks to map the evolution of relations between the Czech majority and the German minority that resided in the former political district of Policka. The analysis concentrates on the period of 1897-1946, with a concentration focusing on the culture of "remembering" and the ways in which both ethnic groups came to divergent interpretations of their mutually-shared history. The author strives to identify the factors that influneced the actions and positions of the local populace during the key political events of 1918, 1938 and 1945. He concentrates not only on the everday interactions between both ethnic groups, but also on the conditions that both groups found themelves in during the so-called "National Confrontation."
