Smoking as a social deviation and its regulation
Rázga, Michal ; Čada, Karel (advisor) ; Kuchař, Pavel (referee)
This thesis deals with the issue of smoking as a social deviation. It focuses mainly on when and under what conditions smoking in the Czech Republic becomes a social deviation. The thesis points out that nowadays there are ideal conditions for smoking to become a social deviation. There are, in particular, two reasons for that: First, smoking is unhealthy and second, there is a new international trend of health promotion which is very popular today. The core of the theoretical part is represented by a chapter on social deviation which also includes the issues of social norms and presentation of smoking as a social deviation. Smoking becomes a social deviation in cases of breach of formal norms defined by the legal provisions regulating smoking. The thesis, therefore, includes a detailed inventory of all legal measures regulating smoking in the Czech Republic. The practical part addresses the views of students of social science disciplines regarding smoking as a social deviation. Students demonstrated a very good knowledge of the given issues. They do not perceive smoking as a social deviation, nevertheless, they suggested three new regulatory measures which in their opinion should strengthen the statutory regulation. By this, they also pointed out other cases of potentially socially deviant smoking.

Kasík, Pavel ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Science as the enterprise engaged in the knowledge-acquiring of reality has gone through a long and complex historical development. As new technologies came to rise, too did the social importance of science in various areas; it often serves as the explanatory frameworkofunderstanding the reality itself. This master's thesis explores the often complicated relationship between scientific discourse and the mass media. This means examining various historical connections and similarities, such as the common relation to the industrial revolution, and also demonstrating important disparities between science and media in relation to knowledge management, perception of authority figures and methods of reality representations. Modern Dystopias and Theories of Totalitarianism
Machart, Filip ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Novák, Miroslav (referee)
The diploma thesis Modern Dystopias and Theories of Totalitarianism deals with comparation of this two phenomena. The thesis is based on the concept of Giovanni Sartori. He understands the phenomenon of totalitarianism as ideal ending of the axis totalitarianism- democracy. Extreme points of this axis fulfill the role of unrealizable ideal regimes. In reality we can only move closer to them but modern dystopias may represent these ideal regimes. The diploma thesis is divided into theoretical and practical section. There is the analyse of five books in the theoretical section which deal with the theory of totalitarianism. The analysis contains the work of Sigmund Neumann, Hannah Arendt, Carl J. Friedrich and Zbigniew K. Brzeziński, Giovanni Sartori and Juan J. Linz. Each theory of totalitarianism is supplemented by reflection from other authors. There is the analyse of five dystopias (J. Zamjatin - We, A. Huxley - Brave New World, G. Orwell - Nineteen Eighty-four, M. Atwood - The Handmaid`s Tale, A. Moore, D. Lloyd - V for Vendetta) in the practical section. The analysis contains the storyline of the book, elements of totalitarian regime in the dystopia and inspiration of author for the world of dystopia. There is elaborated final comparation between theories of totalitarianism and modern dystopias...
Quality and performance assessment of healthcare providers in Slovakia on the basis of administrative data
Vraždová, Tamara ; Maďarová, Henrieta (advisor) ; Bryndová, Lucie (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to explore options for hospital profiling in the Slovak republic. Sacrificing breadth of the study in favor of depth, the scope of the analysis was narrowed down to one quality indicator only - mortality. In the first step a mortality prediction model was constructed in order to predict expected probability of death on the basis of a set of risk factors in order to filter away variation in hospital outcomes that is caused by other factors than quality of care. Validation of the model was performed on a validation sample of 25% of data. Discriminative ability of the final model is very high - c-statistics over 0.9. Furthermore, we verified that hospitals differ in the risk structure of their patient populations significantly - mean predicted probability of dying for hospitals differed from 0.02% to 33%. In the second step hospital profiling was performed. Standardized mortality ratios were calculated for each hospital as a difference between observed and expected number of deaths. After introduction of risk-adjustment and calculation of confidence intervals 43% of hospitals were re-classified. 30-day mortality was selected as the best indicator for hospital profiling.
Growing importance of energy and military security of the Visegrad Group
Kierczak, Natalia ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
The thesis researches whether in the Visegrad Group there is growing importance and securitization of energy security and military security leading to further cooperation based on recent crises. The thesis also researches whether Russia is perceived as a threat. This is done through content analysis of national security strategies, energy security strategies and military or defence strategies, as well as discourse analysis of official statements presented by ministries and governments of the Visegrad Group states. In the text, also materials published by the Visegrad Group as a whole are analysed. The discourse analysis in case of the states is focused on moments of crises. In energy security field, three crises were chosen: gas crises of 2006 and 2009, as well as oil crisis of 2008. In the chapter about military security, two events were chosen- conflict in Georgia in 2008 and military exercises in 2009. As it is presented, cooperation in energy security is already taking place and cooperation in military affairs in form of battlegroup is planned. Especially in energy security, a link between recent crises, their securitization and cooperation might be seen based on the research.
Somewhat cloudy with a chance of sunshine: Analysis of renewable energy generation support schemes
Bízek, Jan ; Ščasný, Milan (advisor) ; Kracík, Jiří (referee)
Support for electricity generation from renewable energy sources is one of measures aimed at switch of European economies from fossil fuels to renewables. In the past a lot of attention was paid to the theoretical assessment of different support schemes, however, analysis of the empirical data on those schemes is somewhat lacking. This thesis analyses assessment of two types of support schemes in three countries on empirical data. The main contribution of this work is (i) expansion of previously used methodology that analyses relationship between investments into electricity generation from renewable energy and the net present value of such investments, and (ii) inclusion of the Czech Republic into the list of observed countries. Post-neoliberalism and the path towards integration in South America
Flores Uijtewaal, Celeste ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
Over the past decade, South America has been undergoing many transformations, through which it has been experiencing rapid economic growth, has heightened its ability to act more autonomously from international influence on matters of decision-making, and in general is perceived to have become a more stable region in several aspects. In this outlook, South America is increasingly distinguishing itself from the rest of Latin America. South America has been seeking integration for more than two centuries, when independence from the colonizing powers marked the introduction of the notion of integration in the region. However, most observers would argue that until now, South America has not succeeded in achieving its integration aims. Today, however, a new form of regional integration is being introduced in South America, which is said to differ significantly from previous integration schemes. This time, integration is based on left governments, and thereby South America is thought to have entered a Post Neoliberal stage. Historical factors explain the need for a Post Neoliberal approach to government nowadays, as it may be the only sustainable way forward for the region's development. Post Neoliberalism is therefore at the core of new integration efforts. Particularly the recently established Unasur...
The world of Arlt's tales
Bláhová, Tereza ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee)
The main focus of this thesis is the interpretation of the view of the world in two of the short stories of Argentinean writer Roberto Arlt. The thesis is based on essay of the foundation, evolution and theory of short story. Both the global point of view and the perspectives of Hispano-American authors Horacio Quiroga, Julio Cortázar and Jorge Luis Borges are considered. In addition, this work describes Argentinean society at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century, the society being the main period of Arlt's pieces. The context of the literature in Buenos Aires in the 1920s and 1930s is also described to introduce the writer's position among his contemporaries. A brief introduction of Roberto Arlt's biography and writings is included as background. All of these factors are addressed in the analysis of the short stories "The Little Hunchback" and "Ester Primavera." The analysis is targeted at the style and method used to create the short stories and about the acts and life situations of its characters. Arlt's integration of lower social class and colloquial language in literature, his interest in the individual existence, and the gradual elimination of the boundary between reality and fiction, inspired many writers of the following generation.
