Pollock and Jung
Dvořáková, Simona ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
To be able to demonstrate Jung's symbolic archetypes of the collective unconscious, I have taken as an example the relation between Jackson Pollock and the analytical psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. At the beginning I have aimed to describe the wider context, the meaning of the unconscious, and key psychological aspects that are necessary to be understood for being able to interpret some of Pollock's early works. At my thesis, I am not talking only about psychotherapy, which he attend for the first time in 1938, but also about his deeper interest of Jungian concepts and archetypes were expressed in his paintings. Since 1941 is obvious that his work contains more elements of imagination. Base on Jung's principles, his work is also more focused on myths and cultures of early civilizations - Assyrian, Egyptian, Mayan and early Colombian art. This impact of unconscious symbolism was also caused by John Graham's theories, and by "Modern Man literatue" of Joseph Campbell or Harvey Fergusson. At the end of my thesis, I am looking for ways of implications of Pollock's experiences within psychoanalysis on visual style of his work. I am trying to find an answer; to what extent is possible to demonstrate the impact of psychoanalytic interpretations on his art. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Approaches to Dream Reality and Content of Transsexual Peoples' Dreams
Šubrt, Miroslav ; Hrubý, Radovan (advisor) ; Doubek, David (referee)
The subject of this study are dreams, specifically their content in transgender people. The study asks if the content of their dreams could be interpreted in the context of their lives. It submits a summary of historical approaches to dreaming and views of the major psychological schools. The presented empirical research has a character of a triple case study while the mixed design was used and it is based on assumption of Hall's continuity hypothesis. The core of this work is use of a dream content analysis created by Hall and Van de Castle on dream series produced by one transgender FtM person in order to seek differences in many indexes from norms. Analysis revealed many differences from male norms, especially in the Familiar Setting Percent and Dead and Imaginary Percent. The quantitative part is accompanied by a qualitative content analysis which was applied to the dreams of already mentioned person and remaining two MtF participants. It showed themes related to confusion of mental and physical identity, doubts and interpersonal conflicts which are, according to the author, directly related to transsexuality. Self-portrait - Vivisection of One's Own Image
Härtelová, Magdalena Jadwiga ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (referee)
This bachelor thesis is dealing with self-portraiture as genre with concentration on inner processes regarding the concept of one's own individuality. These take place in the course of creation and manifest themselves in the resulting work of art. The essay contains four case studies analysing self-portraits of four artists throughout art history. A hypothesis is presented in the introductory chapter about two levels of self-portrait - a representational one and a latter one of deviations from original plan, where the self-transformation of creative process shows. The next chapter sums up different types of self-portraits as well as evolution of the genre. Instead of specific art works or artists it focuses on factors influencing perception of self, artists' status and the very self-portraiture as genre. In third chapter, ideological stand points are outlined. It concerns with the limits of objectivity, extent of individuality and temporality. Following is the body of the thesis. It is divided according to the three participants of self- portrait: author, object and viewer. Each chapter is sealed with a section regarding one of the tenses concerning work of art: The Past as a Setting, Visions of the Future and The Presence of Art. The part of the author deals with elements of settings prior to...
André Breton and psychoanalysis
Paulů, Aneta ; Jamek, Václav (advisor) ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the connection between psychoanalysis and surrealism, an important avant-garde group. The thesis focuses on selected theoretical writings of A. Breton, leader of the surrealist movement. Influence of psychic automatism on his work is being examined along the processes revealing unconsciousness in comparison with S. Freud's fundamental works. The thesis further defines how the Freudian psychoanalysis was processed in Breton's concept of surrealism and how it influenced surrealist conceptions and procedures, provided that the basic elements of inspiration are taken right from psychoanalysis. The ultimate goal of the thesis is to determine to what extent is the influence of psychoanalysis apparent in Breton's work, and where the surrealism goes beyond psychoanalysis itself.
Situation of the Surrealist Subject
Svěrák, Šimon ; Zuska, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Dadejík, Ondřej (referee)
Univerzita Karlova v Praze Filosofická fakulta katedra estetiky Diploma thesis Šimon Svěrák Situation of the Surrealist Subject (abstract) 2012 thesis supervisor: prof. PhDr. Vlastimil Zuska, CSc. Abstract This thesis focuses on the situation of a substantial subject in the historical development of the surrealist experience and confronts it with our original postmodern interpretation of thoughts of early Marx. The surrealist consciousness is based on a dialectical opposition between rational and irrational elements of cognitive processes. André Breton apprehends this dialectics under the perspective of love life and relates it to values of love, freedom and poetry. Nevertheless, this conception changes in the immanent development of the surrealist consciousness from Breton over the work and thoughts Salvador Dalí and Mikuláš Medek to Vratislav Effenberger. Effenberger removes positive values from surrealism and puts emphasis on the critical functions of the irrational. On the psychological field, all these ideas are based on the conception of the unconscious which means there is the substantial approach in them. Our critical interpretation of Marx shows, that the surrealist concept of subject is in the contradiction with its substantial determination. The subject has to be perceived as the essential...
Unconscious Religiousness from the Perspective of Selected Psyhological School
Řádková, Lucie ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Halík, Tomáš (referee)
Currently, the popularity of spirituality is growing at the expense of institutional forms of religion. Spirituality is associated primarily with personal spiritual experiences, which can take various forms and draw from different sources. Bachelor thesis deals with the unconscious spirituality, which is defined as a hypothetical concept, on which we can conclude from various indirect expressions of human experience and behaviour. Indications of this concept can be found in the writings of the founder of analytical psychology C. G. Jung and the founder of existential analysis V. E. Frankl. Due to current shift of meaning of the concepts of spirituality and religiousness, the question is whether their theories can be applied to the contemporary situation and the concept of the unconscious spirituality. First are summarized current approaches and definitions of spirituality and religiousness. Attention is focused mainly on definitions of B. J. Zinnbauer and K. I. Pargament. Thesis continues with discussing basic notions and theoretical background of both psychological schools and also their approach to religion. These basic concepts are applied to the concept of unconscious spirituality with an attempt to further explanation. On the basis of the above mentioned application, both approaches are...
Vertiginous relations in Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms and Mourning Becomes Electra
Landerová, Petra ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Wallace, Clare (referee)
The recurrent theme of inter-human family relationships in a state of loss and decay in plays authored by Eugene O'Neill arises in part from the author's own traumatic relationship with his parents and with his brother James. Trying to deal with his torturous memories, O'Neill seeks answers through his cursed characters, who partly derive from the writer himself, yet also offer a universal portrayal of humankind as a victim of his own mental being and system. Given O'Neill's profound interest in psychoanalysis, the plays mostly take place in the life process of the individual minds of the protagonists and of the animating effect they have on others who populate the play-texts; therefore it is essential for the understanding of the play-works under critical consideration to look at the inner lives and worlds of these enigmatic characters, and to evaluate to what extent they act on their own will and where, conversely, unconscious forms of desire from other characters, memories, wishes, objects and so forth are instead determinant. The canonical plays Desire Under the Elms and Mourning Becomes Electra offer an intriguing blend of the forms and of the contents of the classical-traditional and of the modern stage play, as they extend the heritage and the lineage of ancient Greek tragedy, although situated in...
Consciousness and unconsciousness. Theoretical analysis
Skála, Pavel ; Kebza, Vladimír (advisor) ; Uhlář, Pavel (referee)
This theoretical study is looking into consciousness, unconsciousness and concepts that are associated with it. It also goes back to the historical approach to these two terms, yet it points out the terminological obstacles that are inseparably connected with them. Both constructs are being discussed from an integrated perspective therefore neither mapping of the neurobiology of consciousness nor the summary of the major approaches to the philosophical mind-body problem, is left out of consideration. The unconsciousness research methods are divided according to the predominant focus into experimental and clinical. The study also covers an analysis as well as a review of significant theoretical approaches to consciousness and unconsciousness. These theoretical concepts were classified based on distinction of relevant scientific disciplines that are used to describe the problems in question. Neurobiological, psychological and philosophical theories were later categorized according to this method. The final conclusion brings a complex overview of these topics previously dealt with in the study. It attempts to integrate the findings into a comprehensive framework and to deal with some general issues that indicate possibilities and limits of the theoretical and practical research into both phenomena....
