Social Media and their Influence on Democratic Elections
Prostřednictvím sociálních médií mohou politici propagovat svou politickou kampaň a svou stranu a díky tomu rychle a ekonomicky získat podporu.
U.S. - Chinese relations during Obama's first term: 2009-12.
Michaláková, Markéta ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
Obama's administration approach towards People Republic of China (PRC) has changed during its first term from a very benevolent view to a tougher line. At first Obama used a concept, which had been established during the Bush administration - concept of viewing China as a "responsible stakeholder". This concept portrayed China as a country responsible towards international system. Later Obama's administration introduced a concept of "pivot to Asia", which deepened American engagement in the region and which should have posed a counterweight to Chinese growing influence in this area. The main purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze foreign policy concepts of Obama's administration towards PRC as well as description and analysis of Chinese foreign political concepts (peaceful development and harmonious world). The next part of this paper focuses on analysis of two aspects of relations between these two countries: diplomatic relations and human rights issues, which both prove the assumption that Obama's approach towards PRC has changed during his first term in office.

Laksarová, Veronika ; Kýrová, Lucie (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The US presidential election in 2016 is a very important event not only for America itself, but for the whole world as well due to the American influence. This thesis focuses on the process of candidate's nomination for the general election, thus on the primary election of the Democratic Party. The topic of the primary elections is limitedly reflected in the Czech environment not only by specialized literature, but also by the media, mainly due to their time-consumption, complexity and lack of similarity to the Czech system. For these reasons, the whole system of primary elections represents the first part of the thesis. The practical part of the thesis is aiming to analyse political attitudes and programs of selected democratic candidates in 2016 - Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Selected candidates are compared in the three thematic areas that voters considered as the most important according to pre-election surveys in 2016. The areas include the economy and employment, national security and healthcare. The aim of the thesis, besides of the enlightening of the primary election system and the comparison of candidates, is to answer the hypothetical question whether or not Bernie Sanders could have influenced the result of the general election in the case he would have won the primary elections....

Šimková, Jana ; Dopieralla, Jakub (advisor) ; Hájek, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of 2016 US presidential election. More specifically, it focuses on media portrait of candidates nominated by the Democratic and Republican parties, ie. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. It describes their road to becoming nominees and their respective presidential campaigns, explains the history of media bias in the United States and then connects those two topics. It describes specific differences in media coverage of Clinton and Trump during their 2016 presidential campaigns. It also deals with the topic of political polarization and what role do media play in it. The thesis chooses two TV shows with audiences on the opposite sides of a political spectrum as a specific example of what can liberal or conservative bias look like. It tries to answer the question, whether and why is Sean Hannity's conservative bias stronger than liberal bias in the case of Rachel Maddow. The paper concludes that Hannity's show goes beyond bias, demonstrates this fact with examples and therefore answers the research question in the affirmative. A summative approach to qualitative content analysis is used to answer the research question. Research sample consists of 28 episodes of TV shows Hannity and The Rachel Maddow Show, which aired during the last 3 weeks before the election....
Social networks as primary information source during presidential elections - comparison between USA and Czech republic
Analysis of Donald J. Trump's twitter campaign during 2016 US presidential election
Neumahr, Martin ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
In the first part of the thesis, I will generally introduce marketing to the meaning of US candidates or their electoral teams in the US presidential election in 2016, describe the negative campaign in political marketing, and explain how important part of the US presidential election was Twitter. The second part of the thesis aims to analyze the campaign of the Republican Party candidate in more detail. On a sample of 1458 twitter posts, I will examine whether and how Donald Trump used a negative campaign against his rival candidate Hillary Clinton and also to assess the extent to which his false claims had changed over his campaign in three specific topics. The thesis examines the period from the nomination congress on 18 July 2016 to 8 November 2016, when the US presidential elections were held. At the end of my work, I will try to answer the research questions.
Sanders and Clinton. Presidential primary elections 2016.
Udržal, Jan ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The divisive primary hypothesis suggests a "hard fought" primary in one party harms it's prospects in the general election. However it remains unclear what exactly constitutes such a divisive primary. This thesis is a contribution to the strand of literature examining this issue. Specifically it follows the idea that divisiveness is primarily driven by the negativity of the campaign. Therefore this paper utilizes the results of content analysis of primary election debates on the framework of functional political campaign discourse as a measure of divisiveness. The results suggest, that the Democratic primary 2016 indeed ranks among the more divisive primaries studied to date. However, when those results are compared with republican debates, it is shown that it's primary elections were significantly more divisive. The party which could have been harmed more by the "hard fought" primary, was hence the Republican party. This finding is in contrast to the traditional operationalization of divisiveness, which would have deemed both campaigns to be equally divisive. Additionally, topics of contention among the Democratic party candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were analysed.
