Globalization, glocalization and neolocalism as driving forces of change of European brewing industry
Materna, Kryštof ; Chromý, Pavel (advisor) ; Szczyrba, Zdeněk (referee) ; Toušek, Václav (referee)
This paper aims to contribute to the debate on the importance of local and regional context on the impact of global processes by using the European brewing industry as a case study. The brewing industry has been fundamentally affected by global changes over the last 30 years. At the same time, beer is a product that has been historically linked to its place of production, and consumers are both sensitive to any changes and can influence impact of possible changes through their consumers' behaviour. The research focuses on the impacts of globalization on the brewing industry and breweries in Europe in terms of the presence of transnational brewing companies on the markets of European countries, the concentration and relocation of the beer production and the unification of the beer supply. Moreover, it studies the glocalization and neolocalism processes shaping the emergence of the phenomenon of the establishment of microbreweries and its spread in space. Glocalization is understood here as a phenomenon in which local initiatives also use the opportunities provided by the globalization to succeed, while neolocalism is understood as a phenomenon of the return of demand for local products as an alternative to the overly strong supply-side effects of the globalization. The first aim of this thesis is...
Guests and Hosts: Tourist Interactions in the Istrian Pension Lucia
Garajová, Jolana ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Kábová, Adriana (referee)
The master's thesis explores the process in which tourist interactions between hosts and guests develop and sheds some light on tourism imaginaries by which these interactions are constructed and produced in an Istrian pension. The ethnography of hosts and guests presented here illustrates how the global and the local are closely intertwined through the process called glocalization (Salazar, 2005) and shows that "the global not only affects, but becomes the local, and vice versa". (Leite, Graburn in Jamal, Robinson ed., 2009: 53) The thesis shows how both the global and the local can take an active part in the process of new meaning-making in the context of tourism. In the pension, there is an ongoing local struggle over tourism imaginaries seeking to redefine the place and people. (Salazar, 2012) The thesis reveals that hosts cannot be viewed as passive victims of their hosts' expectations. They rather can be viewed as active negotiators, negotiating their position in the field of tourism. Key words: globalization, truism, global, local, glocalization, hosts/guests, tourism imaginaries, identity, cosmopolitanism, tourist development Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Glocalization on the example of the HBO Czech Republic
Uhlík, Dominik ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Křemen, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims on the phenomenon of media convergence and especially the spatial media convergence. Media convergence affects our lives every day now, where it has been the most noticeable since the digitalization and Web 2.0 era. It relates to technologies, provides access and the response of the audience towards media content and thus enables closer link between the media producers, media content and their audience. Globalization, as one of the products of spatial convergence, entered the media industry through the digitalization. Glocalization represents one of the trends associated with globalization and it is described as a situation where a global media producer, distributing its consent world wide, spend resources to create a local production. This thesis is focused on one such example, HBO company, originally an American premium cable and satellite television network, with a business model of monthly subscription. HBO distributes its consent via its subsidiaries based in South America, Europe and Asia. These local markets create their own content. The same statement is valid for Czech Republic. I have done the profitability analysis of the local consent production of HBO, Czech Republic according to their internal data. Analyzed data describe the changes in the amount of...

The diploma thesis Pragmatization of a global magazine: glocalization and local globalisation (case study of Czech and French versions of Elle) is focused on the manifestation of the French and Czech culture in Europe and worldwide. Its objective is to analyze cultural signs that are introduced into these cultures via the global lifestyle magazine Elle. The theoretical part includes definitions of the term culture in its anthropological meaning and its relation to the natural languages. The French and Czech culture are described afterwards on the basis of their history, religion, language and cultural symbols. Then the role of globalization in the modern society and its influence on culture and media are explained. Also the profile of the samples, i.e. the French and Czech versions of the magazine Elle, is given, as well as the characterization of the research methods chosen for this study. Kantorová, Katarzyna ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
Diploma thesis "Television formats transmission into Czech environment since the creation of the dual system in the Czech Republic" focuses on television formats which have been adapted in the Czech television industry since 1994. TV formats, the primary analytical object of this thesis, belong among the strongest aspects of media globalization. Since specific television formats spread the same structure, idea and concept, they increasingly influence the practice in television markets and the process of globalization all over the world. With this continuity, the paper describes the theory of globalization, focusing on cultural and media imperialism. Further, newer theories of globalization and their subsequent transformation are described. Based on this theoretical basis, the thesis describes, which TV formats have been adapted since 1994 in the Czech Republic. Our analysis is based on in-depth interviews with Czech television professionals who have experiences with the purchasing and subsequent adaptation of television formats. The thesis provides the overview of all adapted TV formats in the Czech Republic, and describes reasons, difficulties and the overall process of adapting licensed television formats. Czech young consumers' consumption and perception of beer: a netnographic study
Černo, Lukáš ; Chytková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Stříteský, Václav (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to define what globalization is, how the people across the world react to it based on their local context, how the reactions change under the conditions of economic crises and finally how the reactions are reflected in consumption. I answer these goals both from the theoretical and practical perspective. Based on my review of theory I define globalization (1) in economic terms as a recurring phenomenon related to changing power structures of world economy when new economic centers emerge and (2) in cultural terms as localized human experience determined by both one's worldview and one's local circumstances. I further hypothesize that the worldview underlying this localized experience changes during economic crises from modernism to traditionalism and postmodernism. Since Consumption then reflects our worldview in a culturally specific way. In the practical part I further test these findings through a netnographic study focused on Czech beer enthusiasts. The key finding is that the beer enthusiasts express a need to return to traditional brewing methods. However, there appears to be no correlation between economic crisis and the emergence of traditionalism among beer enthusiasts but rather the traditionalism erupst due to clash between modernist worldview of beer enthusiasts and perceived destruction of beer industry by capitalism. Finally, the traditionalism doesn't seem to be replacing modernist worldview of beer enthusiasts but rather serves as a resource for this worldview.
