Škodná, Agáta Anna ; Obdržálková, Vanda (advisor) ; Králová, Jana (referee)
(in English): This master thesis is a case study that focuses on the problem of translation of legal texts from English into Spanish in the context of civil law. In the theoretical part, we discuss general characteristics of translation of legal texts and focus on terminology and syntax in the field of the legal language. The main method of the empirical part is a translation analysis of private legal documents which includes three versions of the originals: the source texts written by a Czech lawyer, translations into Spanish, translated by a Czech qualified translator, and revisions reviewed by a Spanish lawyer without knowledge of the Czech legal system. During the analysis, we focused on translation mistakes in legal terminology and vocabulary, as well as grammatical and syntactical translation mistakes made by the translator. The analysed segments are categorized according to the categories given by T. Duběda and V. Obdržálková and which we have extended according to our needs. In the analysis itself, we then evaluate the suitability of the revised equivalents for the given context based on available sources (specialized legal dictionaries and laws). The aim of the analysis is to construct categories of revisions based on the nature of the revisions made by the reviser. The output of the case...

Hartmanová, Michaela ; Obdržálková, Vanda (advisor) ; Králová, Jana (referee)
(in English) The presented master's thesis is a terminological study that examines the issue of translating legal texts related to the purchase of real estate from Spanish into English. In the theoretical part, we outline the issue of translation of legal texts with a focus on the field of terminology and map the existing research in this area. This thesis will be accompanied by authentic documents in Spanish related to the sale of the property, which will serve as material for the empirical part. All personal data contained in these documents have been deleted to protect them.We will carry out a translatological analysis of these deeds and select a set of terms to follow in the study. For the selected terms, we analyse the equivalences proposed in available sources (professional legal dictionaries and the IATE terminology database) and observe the type of equivalence and the suitability for the context. Finally, we summarize the main aspects of the translation of terminology in the field of law under study from Spanish into English and evaluate the different sources. The terminology study also results in a draft bilingual glossary based on the texts analysed.

Translation for International Police in Kosovo Missions (1999-2018): Challenges and Expectations
Shala, Arben ; Chromá, Marta (advisor) ; Obdržálková, Vanda (referee) ; Biel, Łucja (referee)
This dissertation examines the role and the contribution of language assistants in the police component of United Nations and European Union Kosovo missions between 1999 and 2018. The approach is multidisciplinary and comprehensive. It covers the language assistants' employment cycle, beginning with recruitment, training, and field and office work, through downsizing. This research draws on several semi-structured face-to-face interviews conducted with IPOs, language assistants, and Kosovo police officers between 2018 and 2021. Other important resources, such as training materials, memoirs, information circulars, and other relevant documents, provide direct evidence that is useful for evaluating the Kosovo context and mission settings. This research focuses on the "assistant" aspect of language assistants. In addition to analysing their role in bridging the linguistic gap, it addresses communication challenges such as literal translation, terminology, quality control, and other linguistic and pragmatic issues. Consequently, the interviews revealed...

Contextualized Study of History of Czech Literature in Chinese Translation: 1921-2020
Su, Ke ; Obdržálková, Vanda (advisor) ; Kalivodová, Eva (referee) ; Mánek, Bohuslav (referee)
The present study is the first systematic attempt to survey the history of Czech literature in Chinese translation in a century-long time span, a largely under-researched area which certainly merits more academic attention and efforts. It aims to present a descriptive, contextualized, target-oriented translation history research into the introduction of Czech literature in China from a socio-cultural perspective. It also makes an endeavor to answer the major research questions of "what", "who", "how" and "why", by examining the socio-cultural conditions in three historical periods (1921-1949, 1950-1977 and 1978-2020) and investigating their influence on the selection of texts for translation, the characteristics of translators, the adoption of translation approaches, the choice of intermediate languages, and the employment of various translation strategies. Theoretically, Even-Zohar's (1990) polysystem theory, Toury's translation norms, and Lefevere's rewriting theory, which view translated literature as part of the polysystem, conceptualize translation as a fact of the target culture, and perceive translation as rewriting which reflects manipulation by ideology and poetics, are most relevant to our study and serve as the theoretical underpinning of this thesis. Methodologically, this study is an...
