This theses focuses on Olga Krijtova (1931-2013), Czech translator from Dutch. The aim is to introduce Olga Krijtova within the framework of reception of Dutch literature in Czech cultural environment. In order to explore this framework, the thesis compares Czech and Dutch culture from translatological point of view, outlines the history of Czech-Dutch relationshiops and Dutch literary translations into Czech, as well as the history and current state of the academic discipline of Dutch studies. In the 20th century, Olga Krijtova had contributed greatly to making the Dutch literature available for Czech recipients. The thesis aims to find out how many translations done between the years 1957-2016 are Krijtova's or her students' work. Further, it summarizes her teaching and linguistic work. However, the main focus is her translation activities, which is studied by means of translation analysis in the second part of the thesis. The final aim is to review and interpret Krijtova's translation strategies and methods, as well as to assess her overall contribution to the reception of Dutch literature within the Czech environment and to the Dutch studies in the Czech Republic. The object of this bachelor thesis is to translate the first chapter called A history of seduction from Mark Tungate's Fashion brands: branding style from Armani to Zara and to describe theoretically the process. The thesis is comprised of three fundamental parts - translation, commentary and the attached source text. The commentary is divided into four parts. The first one contains an analysis of the source text for the purpose of translation, the second part describes the selected translation method and the relation between the translated text and the original communication situation. The third part of the commentary comprises typology of the problems that occurred during the process of translation and the last part describes the necessary shifts that have been made in the translation.

Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales in Czech Translations

This master thesis deals with the translations of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales into Czech and their reception in the period from 1948 to 1989. After a description of the historical context and the status of children's and translated literature in the given period, an analysis of different fairy tales follows, with a focus on the influence of cultural and language norms and literary tradition on the translations. Special attention has been paid to censorship. The theoretical background consists of a chapter dedicated to Andersen's life and work, characteristics of his fairy tales and their reception, and a chapter dealing with the specifics of the translation of children's literature. The thesis also includes a bibliography of Czech translations of Andersen's fairy tales (book editions) and a bibliography of reviews, monographs and articles about Andersen published between 1948 and 1989. The main contributions of this thesis are in providing an overview of the translations in the given period and its analysis of the influence of norms and censorship on the translation. The thesis consists of two parts. The first one is a translation of a chapter from the book Räuber und Beute written by the German zoologist Michael Schröpel. The book was published in 1985 in Leipzig. The second part of this thesis is a commentary of the translation. The aim was to create a functionally equivalent translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the source text based on the model of Christiane Nord, translation method and translation procedures, typology of translation problems and their solution and typology of translations shifts that occurred due preservation of the function of the source text.

Peter Newmark and his Contribution to Translation Studies

The present theoretical and biographical thesis deals with the work of Peter Newmark, a prominent Translation Studies scholar. The thesis is based on an analysis of Newmark's monographs and papers and identifies key ideas which constitute his contribution to the development of Translation Studies. Given the context of his time, with the Western world being dominated by neopositivism, Newmark's approach was not in line with the mainstream. The thesis also tries to take into account the chronological development of Newmark's ideas and highlight some ideas from more recent papers, the reception of which was rather limited. Furthermore, the thesis presents the reception of Newmark's ideas and the most important critical responses to them.

The core of the bachelor's thesis is a Czech translation of the article Native American Systems of Knowledge by C. S. Kidwell published in 2002 as a chapter of A Companion to American Indian History. The second part is constituted by the commentary of the translation including the original text analysis, description of the translation method, translation problems typology along with their solutions and typology of the translation shifts. The analysis uses the model of Ch. Nord and constitutes the basis for the translation method. The further chapters deal with lexical, syntactical and presuposition problems and describe shifts that occured during the process. The commentary includes conrete examples of solutions and shifts.

Anton Popovič and his contribution to the development of translation studies

This theoretic-historiographical thesis deals with the personality of the Slovak scholar Anton Popovič (1933-1984) and his contribution to translation studies between the late 1960s the early 1980s. The thesis examines the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of Popovič's theoretical work (especially Jiří Levý and František Miko), analyzes his most important publications within the field of translation studies, and discusses criticisms as well as inspirations of his conception of translation. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of Popovič's role in developing Czechoslovak and international translation studies, most importantly of the so-called descriptive translation studies, or the manipulation school. The contribution of this thesis may be regarded primarily as a first attempt at a comprehensive study of the personality and thinking of Anton Popovič.

Commented translationof a text with a skilled commentary: Prag, literarische Spaziergange durch die Guldene Stadt

This thesis is focused on translation of several chapters chosen from the book Prag: Literarische Spaziergänge durch die Goldene Stadt by Hartmut Binder and on a skilled commentary of this translation. Within the commentary I firstly analyzed the source text according to Christiane Nord and secondly dealt with specific translation difficulties I met during the translation. I had to deal with both linguistic and cultural translation problems. During the translating I made efforts to adapt the text to Czech reader and to address the translation directly to him in order to let him to get acquainted with Prague's sights and literature.

Translation of technical texts from German into Czech

The aim of this thesis is to provide an insight into the translation of technical texts from German to Czech. The theoretical part discusses the present state of knowledge of technical translation in Czech and German speaking countries, the scientific discourse, text typology and classification of texts with regard to the context. Furthermore, this thesis describes contrasts of technical texts, and their characteristic features on a lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and text level. This thesis focuses on technical translation of medical texts with their most common text types and specific features, and explains implications for their translation from German to Czech. The empirical part of the thesis includes translation analysis of a chosen text type and an overview of main text types in medicine, followed by examples of parallel texts in Czech and German. To provide more objective information about translation of technical texts, a survey was carried out among translators and translation services agencies. The subsequent results were compared with the findings presented in the theoretical part. In the conclusion, this thesis summarizes the results of the research into the translation of technical texts from German to Czech with regard to medical texts and offers suggestions for further research.

The bachelor thesis contains commented translation of two chapters of a German book called Verführt. Manipuliert. Pervertiert. Die Gesellschaft in der Falle modischer Irrlehren. Ursachen - Folgen - Auswege (Christa Meves: Seduced. Manipulated. Perverted. Gräfelfing/München: Verlag Resch, 20074, p. 50-88) and a commentary of the translation. The first part of the translation deals with men, their role in society and crisis of masculinity in the last decades. The second part, related to the first one, focuses on women and discusses crucial problems in our society. In her analysis of the society based on the author's own wide professional experience and scientific evidence, Meves presents not only overwhelming facts but also solutions for dealing with the crisis of European society. Further, the thesis includes a translation analysis according to Ch. Nord, A. Popovič and J. Levý and addresses particular translation problems and tendencies, followed by appropriate translation procedures and strategies in the translation process.
