Parental conflicts and speciation in the house mouse
Kropáčková, Lucie ; Reifová, Radka (advisor) ; Macholán, Miloš (referee)
Hybridization between closely related species of mammals is often accompanied by abnormal growth of placentas and fetuses. From the perspective of evolutionary biology, our knowledge about the contribution of such interspecies incompatibilities in speciation is still insufficient. In my thesis, I was finding out if abnormal placental and fetal growth contributes to reproductive isolation of two subspecies of house mouse, Mus musculus musculus and M. m. domesticus, which are at an early phase of speciation and in nature they still hybridize. Using two inbred strains derived from M. m. musculus (PWD/Ph, STUS) and two inbred strains derived from M. m. domesticus (C57BL6/J, SCHEST) we performed four different intrasubspecies and four different intersubspecies crosses. We found out that the size of the placenta in hybrids is more influenced by father, while the size of the fetus is more influenced by mother. After elimination influence of weight of mother and father we have not recorded a significant difference in the size of placentas and fetuses in intrasubspecies and intersubspecies crosses. Our results show that hybridization between subspecies of house mouse does not produce abnormalities in prenatal development, as was observed in hybrids between distant species of mice. It is thus possible that...

Dutch EU Policy
Svorcik, Christopher ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Kořan, Michal (referee)
The Netherlands is a small Western European democracy with historically a strong orientation on international trade, commercial relations, and capital investments. Dutch foreign policy was in turn closely oriented on these interests. This obliged the Netherlands to engage in worldwide diplomacy and wars, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries. Between the Napoleonic era and World War Two, however, the Netherlands became known for its isolationism and neutrality because it lacked the means (capital, military strength and geopolitical situation) to be able to embrace an assertive foreign policy. After the Second War World the Netherlands decided to replace its isolationist stance for economic cooperation with its European partners via the EEC and EU and for security cooperation with its Atlantic partners via NATO. The Netherlands clearly opted for Atlantic ties, European cooperation, international law, and international institutions as the basis of its new foreign policy. For the Netherlands, which was a founding member of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Economic Community (EEC), the main priority of European cooperation centered on market and economy. After the integration and enlargement processes of the European Union (EU) intensified in the 1990s and 2000s, the EU began...

Woloszczuková, Kristýna ; Prorok, Vladimír (advisor) ; Lisa, Aleš (referee)
The theses deals with the most current problem of refugees stemming from the Syrian crisis, and the consequences the migration crisis can have for stability and the overall political situation in the chosen region. Due to the fact that the Syrian crisis is felt not only in the region, the aim of this thesis is to look at the impact of subsequent migrant crisis on the EU with focus on the Czech Republic. Despite various attempts by the international community, including the EU and the Czech Republic itself, to stabilise the situation the migration crisis is not, within a short and midterm time frame, closing to an end, and it is necessary to focus on possible negative consequences it may bring. The aim of this thesis is to uncover possible political repercussions. Even though, the Czech Republic is in reality afflicted by the migration wave on a minimal scale, the main hypothesis of this thesis is that the current migration wave has an influence on its political scene. The thesis is focusing especially on extremism in the Czech public and consequently in the political scene.
