Animals in the looking glasses of Europe and India. The changing bonds between humans and animals in the course of the 19th and 20th century
Nováková, Hana ; Komárek, Stanislav (advisor) ; Marková, Dagmar (referee) ; Cílek, Václav (referee)
This paper deals with various aspects of human- animal relationship: biological, psychological and sociological; but also with the fact how deep and thorough impact can political events have on the paradigma pointed towards animals. Here, these are depicted on significant fields of human - animal interactions of modern times, for example zoological gardens, petkeeping, changing ways of hunting, and also within some more obscure phenomena, such as animal abuse in laboratory research and in "meat plants". I also try to trace the roots of the approach that people of modern time Europe perform towards animals, and I do the same for India. The writing is divided into two parts, each one containing four chapters. The part No. I. - The man and the animal in Euro-American cultural context - describes the turbulent changes the human - animal relationship underwent during the era of Enlightenment, and tries to explain why it was so. Animals have enjoyed a widespread interest since times immemorial, but have hardly ever been perceived from the tabula rasa point of view. On the contrary, they have often been seen through the prisma of human sociology, serving as the immense field of manifold human projections. As such, they have figured in copious kinds of modern "myths", being it myths of ritual or otherwise "fictive"...

Art culture as a segment of the cultural life of nations
Čermák, Martin ; Patočka, Jiří (advisor) ; Hanzlík, Jan (referee)
The principal aim of this thesis is to undertake a historical analysis of cinematography in Czech Republic and France, respectively. In more detail, this analysis will concentrate on financing that flows towards film-making in said countries, while at the same time focusing on the artistic aspect of movies that are created thanks to this financing. This paper tests two hypotheses, which will be either confirmed or rejected after the analysis. First concerns the impact of political regimes on funding available to national film-making, and what effect does this have on the quality of film. The second one assesses the film quality from the perspective of special art tendencies.

Historical topics in the posmodern Hispanic American drama. (Acto cultural by José Ignacio Cabrujas and La noche de Hernán Cortés by Vincente Leñero)
Skleničková, Jana ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Fousek, Michal (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the mayor changes that the Hispanic American historical drama underwent in the last third of the 20th century, in connection with the increasing influence of the poetics of postmodernism. The work will mention the decisive artistic and philosophical concepts that had impact on the creation of postmodern historical dramas. The main part of the study is dedicated to the analysis of two examples of the postmodern representation of history and the historial myths: Acto cultural, by the Venezuelan playwright José Ignacio Cabrujas and La noche de Hernán Cortés by the Mexican writer Vicente Leero. The inicial chapters provide a theoretical base for the subsequent analitical part of the thesis. They outline the general features of drama and historical drama as a specific gender, and trace the postmodern changes over the Latin American culture, with a special focus on theatre production. Although the work is based on the textual analysis, we cannot avoid mentioning the distinctive features of the postmodern staging for its innovative significance. Acto cultural and La noche de Hernán Cortés represent two different ways of dealing with the famous historical heros: Cristopher Columbus and Hernán Cortés. They both offer quite an intimate, familiar picture, using some the postmodern...

In search of an equivocal country
Axmannová, Eliška ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Jamek, Václav (referee)
The present diploma thesis called In search of an equivocal country is devoted to the life and work of Victor-Lévy Beaulieu, a French Canadian (Quebecois) novelist. Beaulieu is an exceptional figure on the contemporary literary scene, especially because of his large scale project that he has been patiently pursuing for almost fifty years - the quest for a Quebecois epic and a hero that could save the nation from its loss of cultural identity. It is the 1978 trilogy Monsieur Melville that stands at the heart of the thesis. The eight hundred pages mosaic divided in three volumes might be mistaken for a simple biography of Herman Melville or for a critical analysis of his work. Nevertheless, it's to the art of literature that the text is devoted. Abel, writer and Beaulieu's alter-ego, is the narrator, while Melville assumes the role of an acolyte. Together, they undertake a voyage across New England and neighbouring waters in order for Abel to find strength enough to write the ultimate Book for Quebec. The thesis is made up by three main parts. Following a short introductory chapter concerned with Beaulieu's life and work and with his relation to the American literature, the focus is put on formal aspects of the trilogy. The first part of the thesis is called Monsieur Melville and postmodern inspiration and...

Vitouš, Daniel ; Kühn, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Maršálek, Pavel (referee)
Legal Culture of the State of Israel Keywords: Israel, legal culture The present legal system of the State of Israel is unique because of its mixing of different legal sources. The legal environment is characterized by interfacing of principles arising out of common law and continental law as well as religious law. The object of this thesis is to analyze how these different legal sources are mixing in modern Israeli legal system. The main question to be answered by this analysis is whether the Israeli legal system can be qualified as the member of one from basic legal cultures of the world (i.e. common law or continental law). Eventually whether the combination of legal aspects is specific so much it is necessary to speak about absolutely unique legal culture category. The thesis analyzes the legal system of Israel in basic branches of law. It is focused on constitutional questions, the way how the state power is established and how is enforced in day-to- day experience. There is parliamentary democracy with principles similar to many European countries but there are some distinctions as well. Peculiar for Israeli political system is strong influence of religious political parties. The very specific for Israel is the construction of Basic laws replacing standard constitution. The great part of the...

Walter Scott's historical novel in anglo-american context and in Czech translations
Mohrová, Hana ; Mánek, Bohuslav (referee) ; Kalivodová, Eva (advisor)
The dissertation deals with the reception of new and world-acclaimed genre of Walter Scott's historical novel and its forms in specific cultures. The theoretical part of this dissertation is focused on comparing the reception of Scott's prose in the original Anglo-Scottish context, in North American cultural context with special emphasis on the context of the American South, and in Czech context. The researching of the two English speaking cultural contexts proves our hypothesis claiming that every single cultural context shapes its own interpretation. Such cultural interpretation in the non-English speaking context materialises in the form of translations. Each chapter on the reception in given cultures deals with the unprecedented success of the new genre of historical novel as established by Walter Scott. When describing the reception the dissertation uses period reviews and criticisms, and monographs dealing with Scott's reputation. In comparison with the Czech reception, which manifests itself as nationally conscious only allusively (in cultural responses, in the choice of novels to be translated, in their texts and paratexts), the reception in North America manifests itself as the transformation of the influence of Scott's works on original literature and also in cultural attitudes and social life....
