More-than-human cohabitation: gentrification, displacement and belonging
Dědková, Linda ; Lorenz - Meyer, Dagmar (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
More-than-human cohabitation: gentrification, displacement and belonging Linda Dědková This thesis examines displacement and gentrification, using the example of the department store Karstadt at Hermannplatz in Berlin. The ecofeminist critique of the binary division between nature and culture is central to my argument that gentrification and displacement are influenced by complex natural-cultural processes. The thesis utilizes a combination of ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and affective reading of historical materials to investigate the historical interlinks between the construction of the Karstadt department store in the 1920s and the present-day situation. I argue that gentrification surpasses the architectural and demographic transformation of a neighborhood and is often rooted in intersectional oppression. Furthermore, displacement encompasses intricate more-than-human relations and processes, such as ways of shopping, and destroys complex local ecologies. Lastly, the agency of materials has a direct influence on the transformation of neighborhoods. The findings demonstrate that non-human agents can play crucial and dynamic roles in the interconnected economic, cultural, and ecological processes that facilitate gentrification. Key words: more-than-human relationships, gentrification,...
Historical cultural landscape of the deserted settlements in the Kaplice region
Baramová, Magdalena
The open landscape of the former district of Kaplice, situated between the Bohemian Forest and Gratzen Mountains on the Czech-Austrian border, has stimulated economic and cultural exchange between the two territories since prehistoric times. From the second half of the 13th century until the events after the Second World War, the region was predominantly inhabited by German-speaking population, but after the displacement the area underwent a turbulent development. Within a few years, socio-demographic changes have got imprinted in the landscape, and today several overlapping phenomena can be observed, which together reflect the process of transformation of the area. At the beginning of the 1950s, many settlements disappeared as a result of under-population and the construction of the Iron Curtain. Nevertheless, there are still remains of the use of the landscape by its former inhabitants, especially in the form of relics of buildings, religious architecture, roads, hedgerows, landscaping, waterworks and other traces. The securing of the national border has brought a further transformation of the landscape, which has had a devastating effect on the cultural heritage, but on the other hand it has helped to develop natural communities that are now protected. Even after the fall of communism, the region has not reached the population of the pre-war period, so the absence of settlement continues to give the area a unique genius loci. However, the cultural and historical values of the landscape are not yet protected on a basis, therefore the paper seeks to introduce the values and emphasises the need to protect them.

The aim of the work was also to get a general overview of the recorded testimonies from the region and the existing links between the current and displaced populations. Methods: To gain data for this thesis regarding utterance of contemporary witnesses I used largely publications Krkonošští rodáci vzpomínají 1, 2 a 3, further a magazine Krkonoše-Jizerské hory, a website Paměť národa - Sudetské osudy (Antikomplex) and a method of semi- structured interview with one witness. I focused especially on German- speaking natives born in 1920s and 1930s from the east of the Giant mountains, largely from villages Horní Maršov and Velká Úpa and surroundings, occasionally supplemented by compatriots from the middle of the Giant mountains. It was 17 withesses in total - 8 women and 9 men. Afterwards I made a comparation of sources mentioned above with prefessional literature and populary educational literature and websites, which have a relation to the region and to period, historical and social events. Conclusion: The thesis introduced key moments of life stories of predominantly German-speaking withesses from the east of the Giant...

Linear features of agricultural landscape of the Pilsen region border area
Černík, Lukáš ; Kabrda, Jan (advisor) ; Kučera, Zdeněk (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on the development of linear features in agricultural area of the Pilsen region border area. Transformation in the landscape microstructure are researched by an evaluation of the linear features changes. The states in the middle of the 20th century and in the present are compared by the indicator 'density of the linear features in the agricultural landscape'. According to the assumption, the number of the linear features has noticeably declined. The biggest declined number refers to the linear features of communications. The number of the dry vegetation and wet watercourses linear features has slightly increased. Concerning length, the biggest decrease refers to the number of the narrowest and narrow linear features, while the number of wide linear features have increased. The decline of the linear features is more noticeable in areas struck by the expulsion of Czech Germans than in areas where Czech inhabitants have lived. The assumption, that demographical changes had influenced changes in the microstructure of the border areas, was proved. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
