Voting Behaviour of Generation Z in the Czech Republic
Svobodová, Lucie ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Konrádová, Marcela (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the voting behaviour of Generation Z in the Czech Republic. It aims to explore what Generation Z's key values and concerns are and how they engage with politics. Understanding the issues that are important for Generatoion Z is crucial for politicians to be able to represent their interests more effectively. The theoretical part describes political psychology, the key factors influencing voting behaviour and models explaining voting behaviour. Next, Generation Z is defined. This is followed by the practical part, which is divided into two parts. The first part of the research is conducted through in-depth interviews among representatives of Generation Z. In the interviews, the respondents describe their priorities in life, their greatest concerns and their political participation. Respondents are most concerned about their finances, climate change and the political situation related to the threat of war. The interviews also revealed that excessive monitoring of world events has a negative impact on respondents' mental health. All respondents are interested or want to be interested in politics. They are satisfied with the president, but the current government does not represent their interests as they would imagine. The second part of the research is conducted using...
Shifts in Voters' Preferences in 2016 in West Virginia
Obleserová, Natálie ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
The theme of the thesis is the change of voters preferences and the impact of the shift of electoral support from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in the state of West Virginia in the United States of America. The aim of the thesis is to find out what factors led West Virginia voters to change their voting behaviour in the 2016 election and why and based on what factors Donald Trump won. The thesis analyses what social and economic changes in the region had an impact on the victory. The thesis will first describe the political landscape of West Virginia, the cultural and socio-economic context of the electorate, and then it will focus on the populist rhetoric of Donald Trump, applied to West Virginia. The thesis is a case study and is divided into four parts. In the first part, the theory of electoral behavior and the theory of populism is briefly outlined, in the second part, the historical-cultural context of West Virginia, which is important for understanding the electoral mentality of voters, is presented. The third part will describe the historical-political context that serves to better understand party identification of voters and the election results in West Virginia. The last part applies the findings from the previous chapters to the election victory of Donald Trump in 2016.
The effect of the "metropolitan voting" on voting behaviour in the 2021 Czech legislative election
Vratný, Radek ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Mikešová, Renáta (referee)
This thesis examines one of the factors underlying voting behaviour in the last Czech legislative election to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2021. It explains the differences between composite and contextual research approaches and then focuses on the possible identification and demonstration of the metropolitan voting effect, which can be considered as a subcategory of the contagion effect. Given the lack of attention to this phenomenon in the literature to date, the paper summarizes and partially innovates the conceptualization of this phenomenon. The contagion effect, also called the neighbourhood effect, refers to a situation where people revise their voting behaviour under the direct or indirect influence of the prevailing stances and opinions of people moving or living in a defined area. Then they vote based on this revision, thus their individual characteristics, which are addressed by the composite approach, have less influence on them than would be expected. This paper attempts to demonstrate the effect of metropolitan voting in two metropolitan areas, Prague and Ostrava, using the statistical methods of multiple linear regression and spatial autocorrelation. Multiple regression works with many data at the level of municipalities and city districts...
The comparison of the Parliamentary elections in 2017 and 2021 in terms of voter behavior and results
ŠLECHTOVÁ, Barbora
The bachelor's thesis deals with Parliamentary elections held in 2017 and 2021. The goal of the work is to compare the voters' behaviour, election results and election campaigns, both on a yearly basis and between the two years. The first chapter deals generally with elections to the Chamber of Deputies, the financing of political parties and the recalcuation of votes into mandates. The second chapter is about electorate voting behavior, and the first part is theoretical, while the sequel is already focused specifically on how voters made their choices in both years of comparison. The third chapter summarizes the election results and compares them with assumptions that were published shorter or longer before the election date and shows the spillover. In the last chapter of the thesis, one can read about the election campaigns and their comparisons and the changes that have taken place during the election period.
Territorial differentiation of voter turnout in local election in Czechia
HŘEBÍČKOVÁ, Anna
The presented bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of spatial differentiation of voter turnout in local elections. The thesis uses quantitative analysis of voter turnout data for the reference period of 2006-2022. It examines how voter turnout differs in different geographic areas and what influences and factors may affect these differences. Voter turnout is analysed in hierarchically different spatial units, such as municipalities, districts, and regions, and these differences are also expressed through map outputs. Emphasis is placed particularly on the "problematic" regions of the Czech Republic - rural areas, border regions, or internal peripheries. At the same time, the thesis points out the developmental aspect of voter turnout over time, for which a change index is used in the thesis. Subsequently, the thesis also analyses the relationship between voter turnout and selected sociodemographic or socioeconomic characteristics of the population. The impact of factors such as age, education, and unemployment are particularly examined.
The Friends and Neighbours Effect and Its Relevance to Voting Behaviour in Czech Parliamentary Elections
Pileček, Radek
Voter decision-making about which political party to support in the elections is a very complex process. One of the key factors influencing our voting behaviour is the effect of particular candidates in terms of their local activities. Many Czech and also foreign studies show that candidates gain significantly higher preferences in the municipality of their residence and its surroundings. Within the analyzed parliamentary elections, this is reflected not only by the territorial concentration of preferential votes, but also by higher local electoral support of the political parties or movements represented by these candidates. This diploma thesis examines, among other things, differences in the strength of the described effect (technically called the friends and neighbours effect) between candidates from different political parties and in different regions of Czechia. Quantitative research has shown greater local strength and spatial extent of friends and neighbours effect for leading candidates from non-metropolitan areas who have experiences from local or regional politics, such as mayors or regional councilors. In the 2017 parliamentary elections, the friends and neighbours effect mostly influenced the spatial patterns of electoral support of the KDU-ČSL and the STAN movement and on the other...
Specifics of electoral behaviour in East German states and their reasons
Šebek, Ondřej ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
This thesis is aimed at voting behaviour and current voting trends in the eastern states of the FRG. During its short existence the right-extremist party Alternative für Deutschland has managed to succeed in regional as well as national policy, mainly due to the votes from the eastern states of the FRG. In my work I am dealing with specifics of the Germans choice during the elections to Bundestag, mainly I am focusing on the eastern states of the FRG. To clarify the reasons for the choice of Alternative für Deutschland in the east, I use the data obtained from the voters during the elections, on which I based the answers to my research questions. The conclusion of the thesis is that voters make decisions based on rational behaviour, as well as party identification, and populism also plays a role in decision-making, due to the promises of Alternative für Deutschland and their criticism of the government. Different results in the eastern states are affected by worse economic situation of the voters, inequality between eastern and western states of the FRG and immutable situation in the last 30 years since the unification of Germany.
Who votes for populist parties in Czechia?
Maxová, Anna ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Stropnický, Matěj (referee)
Besides continuously growing influence of populism, there is also an increasing interest in studies analysing the electorate of populist parties and factions. This is also taken into account by this thesis, the aim of which was to identify the common characteristics of voters of populist parties in the Czech Republic. Measured were especially factors appropriate to the current knowledge of populist voters in Europe. The most common factors, which may induce the individual to become populist, are considered by authors as Euroscepticism, disapproval of migration, dissatisfaction with the local political scene or economic deprivation. Yet the studies are unable to concur, as both the form of populism and factors, which increase the probability of electing populist parties on an individual level, differ across the countries. In the Czech Republic, populism is most represented by the factions ANO 2011 and SPD. According to this thesis, the electorate of these factions does not share quintessential aspects of populist voters across Europe. Rejection of EU membership is a significant predictor of the SPD election, however; a negative attitude towards migration could not be demonstrated. In the case of the ANO 2011 electorate, all established hypotheses have to be dismissed, there are almost no common...
Methodological Optimization of the Median Research Agency's Likely Voter Model Based on Findings from Czech Household Panel Study
Kunc, Michal ; Buchtík, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
The aim of this graduate thesis is proposing an optimization of the likely voter model parameter values utilized by Median (research agency) based on secondary analysis of data from the third wave and post-election follow-up of the Czech Household Panel Study 2017 and the Median omnibus survey. The theoretical chapter presents selected aspects of the analyzed likely voter model parameters. Secondary data analysis confirms hypotheses regarding the relationships of: 1) voter turnout, prior voting behavior and the intent to vote, 2) pre-election voting preferences and actual voting behavior, 3) reported prior voting behavior and time elapsed since the prior election. Hypotheses are confirmed, and analysis results are utilized in construction of an optimized likely voter model. This model's results are then compared to the results of four currently or formerly published likely voter models (MEDIAN, CVVM2017, CVVM2018, KANTAR), all computed using an identical dataset (September/October 2017 Median omnibus survey). Based on prior-set comparison criteria, the proposed model has the highest ranking out of all the compared models. Areas of future research proposed, namely exploring the relationship between prior voting behavior misreporting and voting preference trends, in accordance with cognitive...
Voters and Non-voters in the Czech Republic
Vavřinová, Tereza ; Linek, Lukáš (advisor) ; Hendl, Jan (referee)
This study discusses voting behavior of the citizens in The Czech republic. Traditional studies of voting behavior differentiate between voters and nonvoters according to their turnout in one election. This thesis takes up multielection approach and differentiates three categories of voting behavior- voters, nonvoters and irregular voters. Specific features of voters, nonvoters and irregular voters are identified using logistic regression analysis. Theoretically, the study is based on socioeconomic, motivational and mobilization theories of turnout. The focus is put on the decision making of irregular voters. Circumstances tied with irregular voters' turnout are identified. The discussion on methodological problems connected with multi-election approach and research of electoral behavior generally is part of the thesis. The Czech election study 2010 is a main source of the data for analysis.
