Viruses in Biology Teaching at Upper Secondary School (ISCED 3A)
Blahnová, Anežka ; Pavlasová, Lenka (advisor) ; Hlaváčová, Lucie (referee)
1 Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the educational topic Viruses at a higher level of grammar schools. The theoretical part deals with the inclusion of the topic during school year, analyses available textbooks and other teaching materials, focuses on the theoretical side of the activation methods, and suggests teaching units. In the teaching units it mainly uses activation methods and methods targeting on critical thinking. In the practical part of the proposed teaching unit verifies in teaching, and evaluates their success in terms of the degree of remembering pupils.
Work with text in Biology Teaching
Rezková, Gréta ; Pavlasová, Lenka (advisor) ; Skýbová, Jana (referee)
This thesis deals with the issue of working with text in biology lessons at primary schools. The aim of this work is to determine the ability of pupils to analyze text materials and to work with them in different ways. In the research part of the thesis were created texts for teaching pupils at the 2nd level of primary school and the following 8 tasks. Tasks were given to pupils (n=75) in grades 6, 7 and 8 at different stages of the lessons. The tasks were subsequently evaluated and the student's ability to solve the problem was assessed on the basis of the results. In six assignments, pupils had a higher success rate then 70%, while only two had less than 45%. Research results have shown that the ability of pupils to understand and work with text is good. It has also been found out which methods are amiss and how to adjust the tasks. Key words Work with text, teaching of biology, didactics of biology, teaching methods
Human Biology Teaching with Use of CLIL in Russian
Mutlová, Tereza ; Pavlasová, Lenka (advisor) ; Skýbová, Jana (referee)
The Diploma thesis deals with the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) educational method integrating the fields of human biology and Russian language. The goal of the thesis is to prepare lectures and study materials, its testing and verifying its efficiency in teaching process on two groups of subjects - two grammar school classes (students at the age of 18-19). The input level of knowledge was tested on both classes through the pretesting. The first group of students was afterwards taught with "soft" CLIL method (the theory explained in native language), the second group with "hard" CLIL. The questionnaire showed neutral attitude of the students towards the CLIL method with rather more positive approach from the females compared to the male students. The posttests followed, showing only a marginal difference between input and output level of knowledge on both groups. KEYWORDS CLIL, Human biology, Teaching of biology, Didactics of Biology
Approaches to Biology Teaching in Alternative Upper Secondary Schools
Svobodová, Renata ; Pavlasová, Lenka (advisor) ; Skýbová, Jana (referee)
This master's thesis is concerned with biology teaching in alternative schools providing upper secondary education in the Czech Republic. Its aim is to describe and compare the teaching of biology at selected alternative secondary schools based on three case studies. The selected schools are Gymnázium Na Zatlance with alternative programme ALT, Gymnázium Přírodní škola and Waldorfské lyceum Praha. The chosen strategy of the performed qualitative research was a cross-case study, data were obtained by direct observation of the lessons, individual interviews with teachers, group interviews with pupils and document analysis. The concept of biology teaching in selected schools is elaborately analysed, including the description of specific lessons. In addition, the ideological basis, the organisation and evaluation in each school is analysed too. Comparison of selected schools identified common characteristic features such as emphasis on personal development of pupils, non-traditional teaching organisation, evaluation without school grades, frequent excursions, respecting approach towards pupils and deviation from systematics in biology teaching. The thesis provides a deep insight into biology teaching in alternative secondary schools, which is an under-represented area of the Czech education system....
Students' inquiry skills in biology lessons at selected schools in Ceske Budejovice and surroundings
MARTINCOVÁ, Kateřina
The aim of the bachelor thesis was to ascertain the level of pupils' inquiry skills during biology lessons at selected grammar schools and secondary schools in České Budějovice. The data was obtained using a didactic test focused on the individual steps characteristic for the inquiry based tasks. A partial objective was to perform questionnaire survey with biology teachers. The questionnaire was focused mainly on the teachers' experience with inquiry based education and also served for comparison of pupils' responses and their teachers' responses. The survey was carried out at four selected grammar schools and one secondary school in České Budějovice. There were involved students from all study programmes (four-year, upper cycle of six-year and eight-year grammar school) in the survey. In total 451 pupils participated in this study. The results showed that pupils achieved average results in a didactic test focused on inquiry skills. In this survey, pupils had the highest successful in their content knowledge in relation to the inquiry activity. The pupils also achieved relatively good results in terms of interpreting the data. However a below-average result was found in the pupils' ability to formulate their hypothesis and explain scientific phenomena. Pupils also had difficulties with evaluating and designing natural science research and with deducing conclusion. The cause of these results may be the lower rate of implementing the inquiry tasks in teaching, which was confirmed in the questionnaires obtained from the selected biology teachers, who stated that although these tasks take part in the teaching, they include them rather sporadically because these tasks are time-consuming and the preparation and realization of them are usually difficult.
Evaluation of High school biology classes and proportion of practical courses
Chudomelová, Iva ; Drda Morávková, Alena (advisor) ; Janštová, Vanda (referee)
Science courses, as biology, chemistry and physics, constitute significant real subjects it is necessary to rely mainly on experiments and observations. In other words, the practical training is the hallmark of science. Practical training has a positive effect on increasing the attractiveness of individual objects, but in meaning of cognitive function is still debated its merits. What stand the laboratory work for the teachers, as a mediator of the teaching process? Research shows that the practical training teachers perceived positively mainly because of the perfect linking theory with practice, the lower the number of pupils and their proactive approach in teaching. Negatively seems time consuming, consisting mainly of get and preparation the material. Keywords: biology education and science courses, lab courses, school laboratory, time allocated to science practices
Utilization of aquarium in the biology education
Špůrová, Hana ; Hanel, Lubomír (advisor) ; Andreska, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on the use of freshwater animals in biology lessons. It especially provides detailed instructions for school experiments and observations of these animals, which can be bred in a freshwater aquarium at school. Manuals have worksheets for pupils and are anter keys. Each worksheet has got guidance for teachers, which contains specific instructions for the preparation of observation and experimentation and also gives some additional information. Individual worksheets are focused on representatives of cold water and tropical freshwater fish, shrimp and crayfish. A considerable part of the worksheets is devoted to our invertebrates, which can be caught in nature, and placed into the aquarium for a limited period, so there we can see the experiments and observations of some aquatic larvae of insects, flatworms, bugs, beetles, molluscs, annelids and arthropods. It also includes information about the various representatives used in the worksheets, such as a brief description of the animal and its demands for breeding. There are also instructions on how to obtain these animals. This thesis also contains practical manuals onwhere to place the aquarium in the classroom and how to manage and maintain it because this work is conceived as a handbook for teachers of biology, who have no...
Preconcepttions of chosen biological phenomena in the pupils at Basic Schools.
PAZOUROVÁ, Martina
This thesis investigates a content of preconceptions in the area of biology in the pupils of classes 6 and 8 at basic schools, respectively as well as the pupils of the same age at grammar-schools. Two crucial educational topics have been chosen for the research, of preconceptions, namely the photosynthesis and digestion. Preconceptions of the groups of informants of the same age and their accord with the expected target knowledge were analysed and compared.
