Analysis of Visual Components in Biology Textbooks with Focus on Geology Chapters
Jakoubková, Sára ; Vojíř, Karel (advisor) ; Říhová, Dagmar (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the visual components in lower-secondary natural science textbooks, with a focus on chapters about geology. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate individual visual components within the analyzed sample of textbooks through specific categories, assessing their relevance and contribution to the educational process. In the practical part, the methodology from the Greek study (Dimopoulos, Koulaidis a Sklaveniti, 2003) is described, according to which the quantitative content analysis of visual components in the selected sample of textbooks was implemented. This sample includes natural science textbooks with the approval of the Ministry of Education. For each visual component, the type, function, form, vertical and horizontal scope, distance, and placement in the textbook were evaluated. The obtained results were further compared with research on the same topic. The analysis results indicate that textbooks contain a significant proportion of identical visual components. These results can be further utilized to improve natural science textbooks. KEYWORDS natural science textbooks, visual component, visuals, analysis of textbooks, lower secondary education
Analysis of Visual Components in Biology Textbooks: Thematic Unit Plant Biology
Lopaurová, Anna ; Vojíř, Karel (advisor) ; Říhová, Dagmar (referee)
Recently, the amount of research of visual components in textbooks has been increasing. Most of the research categorizes and divides visual components by type and function, however, the relationship between them and text is being investigated too. Furthermore, existing research are supported by theories proving that a greater effectiveness is achieved when learning from materials containing textual and illustrative components. The theoretical part of the thesis defines what a textbook is, as well as what are its function and development. It also introduces the concept of visual component and its function. In the research part, we describe the methodology used in a quantitative content analysis of visual components in chapters dedicated to seed plants in a defined sample of textbooks. Visual components were evaluated in terms of type, function, form, vertical angle, distance, horizontal angle, and placement in the textbook. Furthermore, we compared the results of the analysis with other research papers investigating the same issue. Finally, according to the results of the analysis, the chosen sample of textbooks uses a large percentage of visual components that are the same according to the categories evaluated. Nevertheless, it seems like the recent research is not applied when visual components...
Analysis of Visual Components in Lower Secondary Biology Textbooks
Heřmanová, Nikola ; Vojíř, Karel (advisor) ; Říhová, Dagmar (referee)
Visual components and their function and use in textbooks are currently a topic that appears in a number of researches and studies. Visual components have a demonstrable influence on the effectiveness of learning and at the same time they help reduce the cognitive demands on students. The thesis in the theoretical part defines the textbook as a didactic tool, visual components and the method of processing visual components. Furthermore, it points to learning strategies for increasing the effectiveness of learning, which are based on work with visual components. The practical part is focused on the content analysis of visual components in the lower- secondary biology textbooks. The function and use of the visual components in the educational process was evaluated. The result of the analysis shows that the visual components in the textbooks are extremely uniform and do not respect the complexity of learning through visual components. University students' understanding and attitude to illustrations in biology textbooks
ZÍKOVÁ, Eva
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to find out the understanding and subjective opinions of students on illustrations occurring in textbooks of natural history and biology. Another task was to perform an analysis focusing on the illustrations used in the textbook of human biology for primary, secondary and higher education. The literature review focuses on the definition of textbooks, their function and parts with emphasis on the pictorial part of textbooks. Furthermore, selected researches dealing with pictorial material in textbooks are presented. The research itself was conducted among students of the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice through a questionnaire survey. The results were then expanded with information obtained by organizing a focus group discussion. In the interview, the students of science teaching discussed the questions from the questionnaire survey and found out more detailed information about the pictures.
Conception of Sex Education in School Educational Programmes of Selected Elementary Schools and Grammar Schools
HONZÍK, Štěpán
For children and adolescents, sex education is a topic important for personal development and future life. Given the nature of the subject, views of the problematics of sex education vary both between and among students and teachers. The goal of this thesis is to analyze educational programmes of elementary and secondary high schools with a focus on sex education-related topics and analysis of natural history and biology textbooks in the context of sex education. This thesis also explores the relationship of students and teachers to this problematics via the use of questionnaires. Analysis of school education programmes revealed differences in inclusion of sex education-related topics in specific school subjects and in teaching time allocated to these subjects. All analyzed human anatomy-depicting 8th grade natural history textbooks include sex education-related topics. Results from questionnaires showed that children recieve sex education-related knowledge primarily from friends and school, despite the fact that majority of them is not comfortable discussing this topic with teachers.
Didactic utilization of selected woody plants around natural monument Čertova kazatelna
Závorková, Lucie ; Skýbová, Jana (advisor) ; Jančaříková, Kateřina (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on the didactic use of woody plants in teaching at the secondary level of elementary schools and in the corresponding years of grammar schools. The purpose is to appropriately use trees and other woody plants that are close to schools and are available for teaching. The theoretical part deals with basic curricular documents, methods of teaching possibly used in science or biology that have been briefly characterized, and the representation of the topic of woody plants and their method of processing in commonly available textbooks. The following chapter provides a description of the woody plants used in the process of making of the practical materials. The research of the thesis includes a questionnaire survey done among teachers of science or biology at chosen elementary and grammar schools in Pilsen and surrounding towns. The research investigated the teaching methods and the actual use of woody plants in lessons and was evaluated afterwards. Based on the survey, a motivational teaching material was created and it was verified in practice with pupils of a specific grammar school. Program of Practical Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Lower-secondary School Students
Váňová, Zdenka ; Ehler, Edvard (advisor) ; Pavlasová, Lenka (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in children and their prevention. It briefly describes the influenced risk factors of these diseases and the prevention of their occurrence. It also focuses on preventive programs of cardiovascular diseases in our country and in the world and describes them in more detail. It also provides an overview of current biology textbooks for the lower-secondary school and their evaluation based on whether and to what extent they deal with the issue of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the thesis is to create a program directed at the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in children at the lower-secondary school, to use it in practice at a selected lower-secondary school and to evaluate its effectiveness in a subsequent questionnaire.
