Democracy in Iraq?
Sedlářová, Barbora ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Drahokoupil, Štěpán (referee)
The thesis Democracy in Iraq? firstly considers difficulties in establishing democracy in Iraq between 2003 and 2010. It proceeds from two hypotheses. The first hypothesis concerns the causes of these problems. The assumption is that the problems there were historically - the fact that until the establishment of Iraq after the First World War kept the Ottoman Empire fragmentation into three administrative separate areas in which lived Shic as, Sunnis and Kurds. British colonization and postcolonial authoritarian regime did not overcome this ethnic-religional fragmentation. The second hypothesis concerns the type of democracy that the post-Saddam elites are trying (not very successfully) to establish in Iraq. The assumption is that is a consociational democracy.
Ion Iliescu and his role in the forming of the modern romanian democracy
Kocian, Jiří ; Tejchman, Miroslav (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
The problems of Romanian transition to democracy after the year 1989 were in large part determined by the form of previous regime. Because of the extreme pressure and control exercised on the opposition and personal dictatorship of the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, no major dissent groups or opposition centers possessing the potential to take part in the overthrow of the regime existed. In the swift and still unclear events of December 1989, National Salvation Front rose to hold the power, being directed by Ion Iliescu at the same time. As a formerly top positioned communist apparatchik, who had been swept out from his status after several conflicts with Ceausescu, he transferred almost complete communist structure under the newly formed regime, including Securitate, the secret service. Deconstruction of the former regime was actually performed by the execution of the former president and his wife and by trials of several Securitate generals. Iliescu concentrated overwhelming majority of the state power around NSF and in contradiction with his original proclamations postponed transition to democracy. New regime, which was led by Ion Iliescu demonstrated in its ideological presentation and exercise of power apparent similarities with the era of communist rule, nevertheless, it worked under formal...
Democratization of Portugal and Romania: is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?
Kasper, Petr ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Adler, Tomáš (referee)
In my paper, I will attempt to answer the question "Is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?" I will seek for an answer using cases of Romania and Portugal, the two states where non-democratic rule had elements of personal dictatorship and its overthrow had signs of a change coming from opposition. My assumption is that studying by unified model is not possible and I will try to find evidence for this statement. In my paper I use theoretical work of Samuel P. Huntington, Vladimíra Dvořáková and Jiří Kunc who study types of transitions to democracy. Dvořáková and Kunc also describe phases of these transitions. From work of Adam Przeworski I use the view of democratization causes. Using these theoretical concepts I will study specific cases of democratization in Romania and Portugal. I will use works of Miroslav Tejchman, Kurt W. Treptow, Katel Durman, Gale Stokes and Steven D. Roper in case of Romania and Jan Klíma, and especially Kenneth Maxwell in case of Portugal.
The assassination of top representative of the State as a mean of political system change
Chrpa, Josef ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Charvát, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis addresses the issue of assassination as a potential tool of political struggle, focusing on the assassination of senior state officials as a way to change the political regime. In the theoretical part the thesis deals with the theoretical topics such as: regime change, political violence, anarchism. The practical part focuses on three specific cases of assassinations in the history of modern political regimes during the 19th and 20th century. Selected leaders who have been attacked are represented by Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov Lenin, Adolf Hitler and John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Was it possible by using assassination as a method of political struggle to overthrow the regime, that each of these leaders represent? Through above mentioned cases in this diploma thesis we can also observe the role of the individual in the political system, not only in terms of the state leader as a representative of the political regime, but also in terms of individuals, who have decided to change the regime by their act.

Democratization of Portugal and Romania: is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?
Kasper, Petr ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Šušlíková, Lada (referee)
In my paper, I will attempt to answer the question "Is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?" I will seek for an answer using cases of Romania and Portugal, the two states where authoritarian rule had the form of personal dictatorship and was overthrown without government cooperation. I will use works of Miroslav Tejchman, Kurt W. Treptow and Jiří Kocian in case of Romania and Jan Klíma, Simona Binková, Zuzana Budinová and Kenneth Maxwell in case of Portugal.
Origins and establishing of multi-party system in Spain after the fall of Francisco Franco's dictatorship (1975 - 1982)
Pitoňáková, Andrea ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Šušlíková, Lada (referee)
The bachelor thesis considers the Spanish transition to democracy, which started after the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975. In the introduction, the thesis provides the theoretical classification of the Spanish transition taking into consideration theories of several authors. Consequently it follows the historic flow of the events, while focusing on the origins and establishing of the pluralistic party system. Moreover, Juan Carlos becomes the Spanish king and he expresses full support for the transition to democracy. An uncountable number of parties participate in the first democratic elections in 1977, but only some of them remain in the system and are able to contribute to the successful transition. The main political party in this period is Union of the Democratic Centre UCD that is led by Adolfo Suárez. The party system starts to change after the elections of 1979 and the next elections in 1982 are not won by the UCD, but by the...
