Czechoslovak newsreels from the perspective of social transformation (1989-1990)
Černý, Ondřej ; Lokšík, Martin (advisor) ; Moravec, Václav (referee)
This thesis deals with the end of film news in Czechoslovakia, which was realized in the form of film weekly newsreels until 1990. In the first part I define film news from the theoretical and terminological point of view and try to describe its specifics. I then explain its birth and the production of newsreel films on our country's territory, from its beginnings before the First World War until the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia and the establishment of democracy, which ended the continuous, state- subsidized and controlled production of regularly published weeklies. In the second, practical part, I use the method of qualitative content analysis to examine the form and thematic framework of the weekly newsreels produced in 1989, when a new concept of film reporting focused on the so-called magazines began to take effect, and in 1990, the year Czechoslovakia entered the democratic process. My aim is to find out what was the role of weekly newsreels as a means of socialist propaganda and a channel of social criticism in the first, revolutionary year and how they changed in the second, democratic year. Although they were no longer bound by ideology, the end of the state film monopoly brought an end to their financial support and power protection, which led to an early end of their...

The Calamity: Neoformalist Analysis and Narratological Analysis
Podskalský, Matěj ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Klimeš, Ivan (referee)
In my thesis I analyze narrative structure and style of THE CALAMITY (KALAMITA, Věra Chytilová, 1981). The aim of my analysis is to discover what kind of techniques Chytilova uses to violate norms of classical narration and style, how she uses film form to reflect upon lapses in morale and tries to disrupt social tendencies of the Normalization Period. I use neoformalist theory (David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson) and narratology (David Bordwell). I briefly discuss economical, cultural and historical context related to the Normalization period and I also study production history and censorship of THE CALAMITY. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Sýkorová, Pavla ; Doskočil, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee)
A professional life of secondary school teachers of Czech gymnasiums (rough equivalent of British grammar schools) in so called normalization period is presented in this thesis using autobiographical recounting, contemporary documents and archival materials. The author mentions the choosing of their careers, their studies and ensuing start of their teaching practice that took place in late sixties. Author puts emphasis on mapping of the leading role of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia in the workplace during the so called normalization period and how it was perceived by the teachers themselves. Author shows the role of the communist party using teacher's reviews, entrance examinations and complex assessments. Later on, author elaborates the mechanisms used to keep school "socialistic" up to the year 1989: controls, deliberations and meetings, schoolings, school phraseology, material provision, anniversary celebrations, voluntary works, skiing and defense courses, sister trips and teacher's role in society. In the end, the thesis maps a downfall of communist party's leading role at schools and the transition to a democratic education after the year 1989.
