Comparison of Select Characters in Czech and Russian Folk Fairy Tales

The bachelor's thesis aims to compare choice characters from Russian and Czech folk fairy tales. The theoretical part is dedicated to oral tradition, it defines fairy tale as one of the fundamental genres of oral tradition and studies its main characteristics. It explains the content and also the form of fairy tales and considers its cultural and social background. The practical part's goal is to compare specific characters from Czech and Russian stories and to describe their signature traits and tropes. The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)

Rigorous thesis "The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)" deals with propaganda in the sports journalism. Its aim is to evaluate how the Czechoslovak press reported about successes of one of the best domestic athlet Emil Zatopek at the Olympic Games in London and Helsinki. I defined a hypothesis, based on specialized literature and observation, that journalists exploited Zatopek's triumphs for propagandistic reasons, and presented the successful athlet as a socialist hero. I verified this hypothesis by means of quantitative content analysis of the journals Rude pravo and Lidova demokracie. I defined two secondary hypothesis as well: The news coverage of the Olympic Games in 1952 was more propagandistically damaged than the Olympic Games in 1948, and the news coverage by Rude pravo of both Olympic Games was more propagandistically damaged than by Lidova demokracie. In the analysis I measure the propagandistic damage of the articles, the photos and the representations of Emil Zatopek. The whole research has a deep theoretical background, which includes a definition of propaganda, an outline of the cultural policy 1948-1952, and a definition of the "hero" concept based on different conceptions from both sides of the Iron Curtain.

ZBIEJCZUKOVÁ, I. The conception of hero in fantasy literature. Diploma thesis. Prague: ÚČLLV FF UK, 2010-2011. This diploma thesis deals with typology of heroes and heroins in fantasy literature, with special regard to heroic quest from the point of view of literally composition. One part of the thesis applies to the defition and history of fantasy genre in both anglo-saxon and czech environment. The thesis therefore uses and cites both czech and foreign fantasy literally works. The aim of the thesis is to point to archetypical neomythic structure of fantasy texts and to their tendency to recreate heroism using particular examples of fantasy literature.

Gender in compulsory reading - Old greek myths and legends: gender analysis of the writing

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. Samson as the Old Testament's Heracles?

This diploma thesis examines the relationship between the Old Testament Saviour Samson and the ancient Greek hero Heracles. Their connection is firstly analysed from a literary point of view. The story of each hero is explored separately and, subsequently, common themes are compared. Furthermore, thesis addresses the historical context of the stories and deals with the history of their possible interaction. The aim of this thesis is to ascertain whether there is a connection between Samson and Heracles, and if so, what this connection is and to what extent we can observe it and trace it down.

This bachelor thesis focuses on children's media heroes. Semi-structured interviews with selected children from ages six to twelve from elementary school in Kardašova Řečice were used for the research. Twenty one children participated in the research were answering questions about favorite heroes, watching TV, reading books or playing computer games. The primary purpose of this thesis was to determine what media heroes children choose, for what reason and where the heroes come from. The secondary purpose are the topics arising from the interviews with children, media consumption by children in general, its possible risk, pertinent regulation by parents and so on.
