Linguistic analysis of newspaper headlines in English

This work deals with the language side of English newspaper headlines. First it outlines the theoretical background of concepts related to the field, such as journalism, news and media language and style. Then it describes the historical development of headlines, their functions and types. The main focus of the work is a linguistic analysis of headlines collected from the British tabloid The Sun. The thesis identifies the linguistic features and means of newspaper headlines and describes their linguistic peculiarities.
Kinguistic analyse of headlines in daily papers Hospodářské noviny and Blesk

The diploma thesis "The linguistic analysis of headlines in daily papers Hospodářské noviny and Blesk" deals with the analysis of headlines in articles that include the commentary genre, specifically in Hospodářské noviny and Blesk. In this work, there is analyzed the form of headlines, how they are set up, and how they relate to the content of the message. The thesis consists of theoretical and analytical parts. The theoretical parts describe the analyzed material, the method of linguistic analysis is described there and also the characteristic of headlines. It is followed by analysis which is divided into two parts. In the first part, there is observed the difference of using the types of sentences and also the kinds of modality in the headlines of observed daily papers and the second part of analysis studies the general headlines and the occurrence of metaphorical expression. It analyses occurring cases of metaphor, metonymy, personification and paraphrase and compares, if there are some differences between the daily papers in observing phenomena. The premise is that the type of tabloid newspaper has a higher proportion of headlines including the metaphorical expression. TV News as a Communicative Means

Bachelor thesis TV news as a communicative means deals with the analysis of two main broadcasting corporations, Česká televize with its' news broadcast Události and TV Nova and its' Televizní noviny. The first part, theoretical, explains important terms, e.g. news, journalism style, news broadcast, news broadcast style. Practical part focuses on analysis from the different linguistic levels (morphology, lexicology, syntax, infotainment and tabloid news). The analysed days were the following: 16. 1., 17. 1. and 18. 1. 2012. The aim was to find identical features or differences. The thesis ends with the overall analysis. It also consists analysis of headlines and introductory parts of news broadcast, comparison of news broadcast from the view of length of news.
Language of Tabloids in the First Czechoslovak Republic

The aim of this work is to describe the language of several important tabloids in the First Czechoslovak Republic. Firstly, sensationalist journalism is defined by different criteria and is distinguished from serious journalism. The development of sensationalist journalism in Czech lands is outlined and the press in the First Czechoslovak Republic is characterized. Then, selected tabloids are characterized and evaluated according to the defined criteria of tabloids. Language in journalistic texts is put into broader context of journalistic style and is considered on the basis of the influences that affect the choice of the specific language means. One chapter is devoted to formal and language aspects of headlines of the tabloids. The headlines are described on lexical level, morphological level and syntactic level. The language of the tabloids itself is analyzed on the same levels, on the lexical, morphological and syntactic level. The tabloid press in the First Czechoslovak Republic is compared to contemporary tabloid press and some tendencies of the development of the tabloid press are outlined.

The intention of my thesis is to analyze "the image of Jana Nagyova on media scandal "Abuse of Military Intelligence"in the period of June 1st 2013 to December 31th 2013 and from May 11th 2015 to July 31st 2015. It is dependent on every single phase of that case and incorporating the large social effects as well. I focused on the semantic forms of the headlines printed by daily Blesk, Mlada fronta Dnes and Pravo. In this research, I decided to use a quantitative analysis based on the answering of the basic hypothesis. This hypothesis is called: it is possible to blamed Jana N. based just by these kinds of headlines, before getting the verdict in this cause? To be more specific: it is possible that all these headlines were prepared to affect the reader's perception of Jana N. including her judgment in the moral, the social or in criminal law ? I also tried to analyze if it could be possible to find the basic differences between the newspapers as it is so- called and the investigative journalism in general. Analysis of classifications of the speech acts and conversational implicatures politeness on the example of cosmetic advertising

In this thesis we deal with pragmatic aspects of language, specifically studying the classification of speech acts and conversational implicature. The theoretical part is concerned with the work of J. L. Austin, J. R. Searle and M. Grepl with an emphasis on differences in the classification of illocutionary acts. Then we deal with the maxim of politeness and pleasantries types according to P. Brown and S. C. Lewinson. In the practical part using analysis of advertising headlines and slogans we are trying to demonstrate the functionality of the classification of speech acts by individual authors. We try to also confirm the performative nature of these statements also implicitly expressed performative verbs. We are interested in the presence of the maxims of politeness in these texts and the consequent shift between different types of courtesy. The aim is to highlight the issue of classification of illocutionary acts and try to outline improvements to this shift. Linguistic Analysis of Headlines in the Newspaper Metro

This bachelor thesis is focused on headlines of the newspaper Metro, which were excerpted from chosen issues from 1997, 2008 and 2014. The theoretical part summarizes definitions of the terms journalistic style and headlines. It also enumerates the stylistic devices that are common in journalistic texts. The focal point of this thesis is linguistic analysis of headlines in the newspaper Metro (lexical, syntactical and orthographical). The impact of the new format of the newspaper Metro in 2008 on the form of headlines is also examined.
