Erasmus Students, Culture Shock and the Process of Adaptation

The thesis is focused on culture shock and adaptation of Erasmus students based on a research conducted with Erasmus students at Irish university. The method of the research was biographical interview with nine students participating in Erasmus programme. The research indicated absence of culture shock and adaptation was usually tied to personal changes and challenges that the sojourn brought about. The thesis presents main topics through which the respondents constructed the notion of adaptation - language, academic, practical, social adaptation and adaptation on the absence of relatives, friends and partners. The tendency of each of those dimensions of adaptation is growing until the exams start which disrupts this process. In the next section, the thesis compares the course of the sojourn to rite of passage, dividing it into three main phases - before departure (pre-liminal), during the sojourn (liminal) and after return (post-liminal). Rite of passage is also one of the ways how it is possible to explain the definition of the meaning of the sojourn for the students themselves. Other ways are adventure and development of self and better understanding of self (the concept of existential authenticity is used to explain this fact). Approaches used when teaching children in multicultural Nursery and Primary schools

Diploma thesis " Approaches to children in multicultural Nursery and Primary schools. It deals with the current approaches to children in Nursery and Primary schools, both in Czech schools and foreign schools located in the Czech Republic. First this thesis tries to find some historical context and understanding of the situation that Czech and foreign schools are faced with. Further attempts to map out the involvement of multicultural education into the curricula and teaching practice in the selected schools. Primarily it creates a comparison of approaches to multicultural education in selected schools in the Czech Republic. The thesis is trying to find inspiration for working with multicultural education in Czech schools, which do not pay much attention to multicultural education. Thesis should highlight the importance of multicultural education in schools and the benefits and positive impact of integrating this education into the curriculum of schools.
Culture Shock on the example of international students in Prague

This thesis covers the problem of culture shock that is nowadays becoming more and more popular, since our world is the world of both extensive and intensive integration and globalization. The aim of the work is to analyze how much international students in Prague are affected by culture shock. The first part of the thesis provides the deep information about the concept of culture shock. The second part of the work comprises the survey which was done by the mean of the questionnaire. The results are evaluated and presented in the particular chapter together with evaluations and inferences. The research shows that there are certain patterns of behavior that can be seen in particular cases regarding culture shock.

Harry Potter: A Social critique

Harry Potter: A Social Critique The aim of this thesis is to offer an analysis of J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels, the Harry Potter series, as a work of social criticism. The striking contrast between the two diametrically opposed fictional worlds, the wizarding world in which the governing principle is magic and its muggle (a term denoting non-magical or status) counterpart defined mainly by the lack of magic, enables Rowling to present and explore various social issues: racial bigotry, social stratification, prejudice, corruption, child welfare, moral questions, misuse of power, civil conflicts, national bias, slavery, terrorism and gender issues. The two coexisting cultures constructed in her novels are reflected in language, customs and values. The complexity of Rowling's work allows her to gradually move towards bigger issues, at first revolving mainly around the main character, Harry Potter, and later involving both, the wizarding and muggle world as a whole. In other words, what starts out as a children's story of childhood changes its course towards a critique of greater social injustices as the characters grow up, a clear bildungsroman in which additional themes are developed apart from the basic struggle between good and evil.
