Petrišče, Ondřej ; Dvořáková, Nina (advisor) ; Spilková, Jana (referee)
EVERYDAY LIFE AND SOCIAL ISOLATION OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IN URBAN AND RURAL ENVIRONMENTS THE ABSTRACT: My presented diploma thesis includes two concepts. The first one describes the quality of life and residential environments; the second concerns social isolation. Both of these examine a different view on the quality of life within the senior generation because the daily life of the older generation is influenced by the intensity and frequency of sociable relations together with the quality of residential environment in which they live. In the study I chose two different types of environments - an urban environment of Plzeň, a borough of Doubravka and a rural environment of a small village - Pasečnice. In the work, I observed the strengths and weaknesses of these environments in a group of people, who were interviewed. The research was made with semi-structural interview and analyzes the disposition of social isolation and the personal feeling about each residential environment. Diploma thesis concentrates on the main factors in senior's daily lives such as social relations, housing, basic service facilities, transportation availability, free time, and safety in the mentioned area of living. Key words: social isolation, quality of residential environments, seniors, city, country, civic facilities

The Conflict of Country and City in Flannery O'Connor's Short Stories
Hejzlarová, Anna ; Wallace, Clare (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee)
Flannery O'Connor, one of the prominent Southern writers of the post-World War II era, has been known particularly for her deeply religious convictions that she interconnected with typically Southern settings and attributes. Although the aim of her fiction, as she herself frequently pronounced, was predominantly in its religious significance, she was not blind to the social and political changes that accompanied the spreading of urbanization, modernization, university education, an emphasis on the scientific perspective and belief in progress - all of which forced the South to adapt to the ideal of a unified, successful America. On the contrary, she felt, similar to many other Southern writers, that city and the urban way of life clashes with traditional rural values and with the region's distinctiveness. This thesis aims to discuss precisely the tension between rural and urban and the way it reflects the conflict between religious faith and modern secularism as understood by Flannery O'Connor. The second chapter provides a deeper context, both socio-historical and literary. The first subchapter focuses on the socio-historical reality of the urbanization of the American South that started mainly after the Civil War and culminated in the period immediately following World War II. It illustrates the...

This work is an attempt to define an alternative definition of rural as compared with the OECD methodology applied to the NUTS 3 units. In the specific nature of the Czech population is necessary to use other methods of defining rural. Bibliography outlines other possible ways of definic, as a empirical research reflects a descriptive approach to the definition of rural based on statistical indicators which are assessed in seven groups. The results are shown in the cartograms. Differences between rural and urban areas are in the Czech Republic according to the chosen methodology very small or not visible. Countryside as defined by statistical indicators have shown similar results as the definition of internal peripherals. The chosen method for the identification is very difficult and demanding. The results are largely influenced by the threshold value for each indicator. Keywords: delimination, country, rural, delimitation, rural areas
