The Ideal City Trenčín: The new Train and Bus Station
Holbová, Natália ; Petruš, Lukáš (referee) ; Kratochvíl, Jan (advisor)
The diploma thesis is based on a pre-diploma project, which focused on analysing the city of Trenčín. The analyses and the questionnaire showed what the city lacks and what the city excels in. This was followed by the selection of one specific problem. By solving my chosen problem, the city would come closer to being ideal. I focused on the train station and its surroundings. This was due to the negative responses in the questionnaire I created and in the available online analyses of the city. I also included its surroundings in the design for a better revitalisation of the place. The proposal itself is in the spirit of respect for the place and resolving the problematic state of the place. The aim is to replace the inappropriate existing buildings with new ones that will add to the functionality of the site.
Contemporary city
Zámečník, Kristián ; Joja, Milan (referee) ; Františák, Luboš (advisor)
To limit urban sprawl into the surrounding countryside, densification of development and use of neglected areas is necessary. In this thesis, I seek to address this by finding an ideal balance between density, open spaces and a diversity of functions that support the further development of the current area. The result should be a city that is viable, resilient and adaptable, delivering a quality living environment for its residents and supporting sustainable growth. A city that works as a whole with its new neighbourhood but is not overrun by it.
Kohnova cihelna (Kohn's brickyard ) – a carbon-neutral city
Hynšt, Lukáš ; Sátora, Josef (referee) ; Kopáčik, Gabriel (advisor)
In recent years, there has been increasing talk of carbon-free districts, cities and even continents in the context of global warming, with intensive research into the possibilities and limits of this phenomenon. Also in this context, specific urban and architectural proposals are being developed more often than before. These proposals work with carbon-free technologies and building or urban elements that can reduce production of carbon emissions and its absorption into the atmosphere. This work also deals with this. Specifically, this work locates a new (mostly residential) district on the eastern side of Červený kopec, in the area of the former Kohn's Brickworks, and through the use of various urban design approaches and building technology solutions, it seeks to move towards achieving carbon neutrality for this complex. Author does so in the knowledge that he is not able to achieve an ideal state under the current conditions, but he considers it necessary to at least come as close to it as possible. In doing so, he applies the findings of his research on the topic of carbon neutral cities.

FLEISCHMANNOVÁ, Eliška
The teoretical-project thesis aims to analyse the position of architecture in the education system for the first grade of Elementary School and to present architecture as an inspirational resource for teaching art education. The theoretical part further deals with a brief overview of the history of architecture, with its aim not being to conduct a detailed analysis of the topic, but to provide only a general insight. The practical outcome is an architectural-art project for the 4th and 5th grades, which provides students with a new perspective on architecture and simultaneously acquaints them with elements of construction through various techniques.

Jan Pfeiffer 2023 Charles University, Faculty of Education DISSERTATION Black. (Selected cases of phenomena in visual arts, culture and their possibilities in education) MgA. Jan Pfeiffer 2023 Abstract The subject of this work is black, or the designation for color. But it is also an artistic concept and means of expression. The subject of my interest are selected cases of the black phenomenon in visual arts, culture, and their possibilities in education. I understand black as a phenomenon that I explore through my own creative work. In the course of it, I ask myself questions, such as: what stimuli, for example, black gives us and how it is connected with our socio-cultural background and its perception. I also ask contemporary artists working consciously or unconsciously with black, what black enables them in their work, and how it supports them, whether it is crucial for them. My intention is to open new perspectives on the subject of black and its connection with daily life, the ability to treat this phenomenon as a conscious gesture, an opinion - distinguishing different uses of black context. I also examine the possibilities of reasoning verified in...
WHOLENESS AS A BASIC ASSUPTION FOR UNDERSTANDING OF MEANING PROVIDED BY ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE
Kinnert, Filip ; Löw, Jiří (referee) ; Michl, Jan (referee) ; Horáček, Martin (advisor)
Is it possible to perceive places and architectural forms as meaningful but without symbolic references? Is it possible to talk about the spirit of a place and life in things without kitschy sentimentality? This thesis approaches architecture as a built environment, and studies how we humans can relate to the context of the natural environment not only by means of interventions but also by satisfying the urge for meaning by mutual co-creation. A certain way of thinking, mainly oriented toward utility and abstract concepts, makes it impossible for us to viscerally connect with our environment. This appears as a part of the environmental crisis, the loss of sense of place, and the inability to create new soulful places. The theoretical basis for this thesis is theories by Christopher Alexander. His idea of wholeness overcomes the apparent alienation from nature, or the division between the subject and so-called “objective reality” and allows us to approach life and the environment in another way than as a mere mechanism. From the perspective of wholeness, the study of architectural language consists of recognizing the meanings of architectural forms as references on the one hand and, on the other hand, meanings of forms that express value by themselves. The latter belongs to the experience of our own subjectivity. Such meanings are expressed for example by art, but they are present in everyday life, and they can be reflected in the order of things, or in places thanks to our own experience of home – a place par excellence. In this endeavor for recognition, I search for support in the works of researchers of the phenomenological approach to architecture, and experts in the fields of philosophy, art, and science, who seem to work with the same assumption of wholeness. Using induction, comparison, and logical argumentation, I point to the correlations between the approaches, and I use their terminology as complementary in my own observations and examples. I offer this thesis to the discussion on the unified architectural theory. I also see opportunity in a vision of sensitive continuity on the richness of the architectural heritage without showing off the “ever new" architectural forms and, on the contrary, scrupulous imitation of "historical" forms. The mainly theoretical work is added with empirical research, in which I point out that some non-visual characteristics of structures can be of the same or even greater importance in evaluating the degree of life (wholeness) than the visual complexity. In doing so, I question some of the conclusions of the leading researchers in the field who investigate the concept of wholeness quantitatively.
The History and Activities of the Town and Country Planning Department of The Ressearch Institute for Building and Architecture in Brno
Žáčková, Markéta ; Chatrný, Jindřich (referee) ; Ing.arch.Igor Kovačevič, Ph.D. (referee) ; Doležel, Karel (referee) ; Koutný, Jan (advisor)
The dissertation explores the history and activities of the Brno-located Town and Country Planning Department of The Research Institute for Building and Architecture (RIBA) since its foundation in 1954 until its abolishment in 1994. As a part of the department functioning, a description of its main research tasks and publications, which had played an essential part while formulating theory and methodology of urban planning after the 2nd World War in Czechoslovakia, are introduced. Special attention is paid to tasks and publications whose authors and research workers applied interdisciplinary approaches and – in spite of the prevailing totalitarian regime – managed to apply their experience acquired abroad to produce highly influential works such as The Principles and Rules of Spatial Planning. Another objective of the dissertation is the creation of a complex bibliography of texts that were produced by the department (books, reports on the outcomes of research tasks that had been explored at the Town and Country Planning Department and that were released internally as handbooks serving research workers of the institute and other institutions focusing on building and architecture). Depictions of the Brno department of RIBA from the perspective of two of its significant representatives who have outlived the institution they had witnessed to be founded and to the functioning of which they had significantly contributed, become a key part of the text: Ing. arch. Vladimír Matoušek, CSc., the second head of the Town and Country Planning Department of RIBA and Ing. arch. Dušan Riedl, CSc., a theoretician of architecture and urban planning and a top expert on Czech national herritage. As the topic has not yet been subjected to scholarly research, the main objective of the work is to create the very first complex text on the Brno department of RIBA and its activities. The circumstances surrounding the constitution of RIBA in the context of other similarly functioning research institutes are pursued with a special focus on the fields of building, architecture and urban planning as well as legislative embedding of its foundation and functioning, its organization structure, staff, definition of taskmasters and the way the tasks were approached, relations to other institutions in the field, publishing activities and transfer of theoretical research outcomes to practice. The text also deals with the state of present-day research of architecture and urban planning. Archive material and publications released by the institute represent a predominant source of information about RIBA activities. They are now stored at the archive of ABF Foundation in Prague (the foundation has been administering both the archive and library of the Prague department of RIBA since its abolishment), at the library of The Institute for Spatial Development in Brno (the institute administers the library of the former Brno department) and at the Moravian Land Archive in Brno. Both of the archives have been thoroughly researched by the author. Critical reflections upon the urban-planning department of RIBA occurring in contemporary publications and periodicals are another important source of information which help to specify the character of its activities (recent literature mentions RIBA scarcely, a complex evaluation is still missing). Oral history reported by former employees of RIBA, who had contributed to the first-rate quality of its research activities.
