The spirit in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit: Antigone and Rameau's nephew in dialectical conflict
Matějčková, Tereza ; Karásek, Jindřich (advisor) ; Sobotka, Milan (referee)
The work seeks to gain an understanding of the concept of spirit in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. The objective will be met by means of Hegel's interpretation of Sophocles' Antigone and Diderot's Rameau's Nephew. In its most immediate form the spirit appears as an organically structured whole which Hegel identifies with the Greek ethical substance. Superficially this substance is conceived as a harmonious organism; in reality - as Antigone's and Creon's paradigmatic conflict shows - it is beset by inner conflicts. The once unitary and organically structured spirit decomposes into individual forms of consciousness during the Roman period and develops in further course into a subject freed from anything substantial. It is in this course of the spirit evolving into a subject that Hegel presents his interpretation of Rameau's Nephew. Rameau represents the self-negating and self-destructive spirit, who has completely identified with Antigone's and Creon's revolt and has lost the capability of accepting anything not issuing from his consciousness. The last part of the work presents the spirit as a movement seeking to encompass both of these extremes, i.e. the extreme of the substance devoid of subject as well as the extreme of subject negating the substance. In the context of the Phenomenology of...
The principal themes and motifs in Rubén Darío's poetry
Grabec, Jan ; Vydrová, Hedvika (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
The aim of this work is to capture and explain the motivic and thematic aspects of the poetical work of Rubén Dário. Rubén Darío has substantially contributed to the formation of the hispano-american modernism, that originated mainly from the literary movements of the 19th century in Europe. Hispano-american modernism has formally revived obsolete poetical structures of its time and has provided other Spanish speaking writers for enriching their writings with new elements. This work then concerns itself with the analysis of themes, which have appeared in his writings most frequently. The motivic part of his writings was, especially in his earliest writings, deeply influenced with mythology, mainly the classical and the germanic one, but also with oriental art, and often evoked the environment of aristocracy. His critics have often declared those motives to be exotic as they were not common in Darío's times. Finally the work is trying to capture the motivic and thematic shift between his fundamental writings, the Worldly hymns (Prosas profanas) and the Songs of Life and Hope (Cantos de vida y esperanza). In contrast to the Worldly hymns, the Songs of Life and Hope decline to existentialism.
Ancient Gods in Today's Advertising
Kohoutová, Alena ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Skopek, Robert (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with ancient mythology influence on advertising specifically with usage of remarkable characters' names in titles of companies and products. It compares information gathered from internet domains, portals and companies' representation with literature specialised in ancient Greco-Roman mythology. Names of the gods and heroes are more frequently used with inner context in their Greek form rather than in Roman form and they are often written with no punctuation. Very common is usage of acronyms which bear resemblance to specific names, however, without any closer relation to the given mythological theme. Most comapny titles really have relatively traceable relation to the ancient myths, which is described in this work. Many of those companies have chosen their names because of the euphonious effect they possess. The research brought to light many appropriately used names related to various fields of business that have not been thoroughly exploited before, eg. name of Hercules. Also, findings unknown to the authors were made revealing eg. relation between Diana and nuts etc. Although it was not possible to embrace presence of all the names in mentioned titles, this work provides adequate insight into the matter of ancient Greco-Roman culture and its topicality as it is related...

Education and training in ancient times - a reference today
KOPTYŠOVÁ, Monika
My thesis discusses the manner of upbringing and education in antiquity compared to current upbringing and education. First, we learn about education in two city-states Sparta and Athens. We compare their differences and then move on to one of the most significant figures of the then philosophy - Socrates. I included a brief introduction to his life but his philosophical and educational activities and ideas are much more important and affect our lives even at present. The thesis is concluded with a comparison of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle views of the then upbringing and education with today?s views. The major objective of my thesis is to find a sort of legacy left for the present, be it either a method or an idea that could be used nowadays to aid upbringing and education.
