"As if a Part of Us Was Left Somewhere There in Sweden." - The Evacuation of Finnish "War Children" to Sweden during the Second World War
Fremrová, Květa ; Švec, Luboš (advisor) ; Svobodný, Petr (referee)
The largest evacuation of children in history took place in Finland during the World War II. Approximately 70,000 children were evacuated to the safety in Sweden (some of them also to Denmark and Norway) during several waves of evacuation that to a large extent followed the on-goings on the front. However, this episode was despite its magnitude until recently one of the forgotten chapters of the Finnish history. This thesis focuses on historical circumstances that led to the final decision to evacuate children, describes how the transports were organized and executed. It also mentions the time that the children spent in Sweden and difficulties with which they had to cope after their return to Finland. Since the 1990's, the "war children" have gained more public attention. In the second part of my thesis, I try to explain how the children experiences found their way to the public awareness, explain the previous lack of interest as well as the sudden wave of attention paid to these children. It seems that this was caused by the combination of political factors and development in the personal lives of the children. During the previous decades, the children had to cope with the denial of their experiences on two levels - by the state and by their own family. During the Cold War, the conflict with the...

Although the thesis is limited in time from 1933 - 1945, it also follows development line of selected scientific disciplines, which were significantly reflected in the Nazi ideology. Primarily it concerns historical science, medical disciplines, genetics, racial hygiene, eugenic origins and other related disciplines. The thesis also takes into account the economic situation of that time with its many social problems which arose as a result of the new geopolitical arrangement after the World War I and the changes in the social world of that period and it also captures the process of changes in the social status of mentally ill people in the course of history. Last but not least, it describes the practical consequences of these changes, which were "forced sterilization" and "euthanasia" of both children and adults. The Nazi ideology is viewed in this regard from three perspectives: legal, theoretical with a broader historical context and on the practical level in the form of the consequences of the two previous perspectives. Key words: nazi ideology, mental...
Attitude of the Catholic Church towards the Vichy regim
Jägerová, Julie ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Horčička, Václav (referee)
Following thesis deals with relationship between the Catholic Church and a regime established in a part of France during the Second World War. The purpose of the thesis is to analyse main origins of attitude of the Catholic Church towards Vichy France. This attitude is generally considered to be positive. The thesis examines this question only on level of episcopacy. Other levels of possible research are knowingly omitted because of a limited extent of this text. The author emphasizes three main problems of relationship between the Catholic Church and the Vichy regime. Firstly, the thesis focuses on the process of convergence of the Church and the state, secondly this congruity is confronted with moments of clash of opinion between these two elements. Finally, the last chapter deals with post-war situation in France which is connected with purification of the catholic hierarchy.
