Czechoslovak (Czech) Radio Broadcasting and Cultural Innovation

This thesis Czechoslovak (Czech) Radio Broadcasting and Cultural Innovation is designed as a cultural study of radio boradcasting development in years 1923 - 1999. Radio broadcasting development is interpreted as a process of cultural change. The aim of this thesis is to capture spreading innovation of the radio and describe the stages of this cultural change. The thesis is divided into two parts, a theoretical part and an empirical part. The theoretical part defines basic problems, deals with the theory of culture and media, the characteristics of radio communication. Particular attention is paid to description of the conditions affecting formation and development of the radio. The main focus of this work is to describe the radio development in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. The second part is devoted to analysis of empirical data and sources, predominantly to secondary and historical analysis of accessible data regarding the radio. The major emphasis is placed on culturological interpretation of results of the analysis. This part also summarizes the importance of cultural innovation in terms of development of the Czechoslovak and Czech radio broadcasting. The concluding chapter deals with changes of this radio broadcasting.

The media system of Ukraine and its transformation in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian War

The thesis focuses on the Ukrainian media, the Ukrainian media system and its transformation especially in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The aim of the thesis is to describe and to understand the transformations of the media system along with it the trends among Ukrainian media consumers. In the introductory part of the thesis, the historical-political context of the country and its ideological and political fragmentation are explained. The developments in the country are characterised through the lens of different presidencies, which quite plausibly symbolize the direction of the country in time. The paper summarizes important approaches in the field of comparative media studies. The dominant media outlets in Ukraine and their ownership structure are described. The analytical part of the work focuses on the development of the Ukrainian media system from 2019 to 2023; an analytical framework for characterizing the media system in a wartime context is introduced (with an emphasis on audiences); the criteria embedded in Hallin and Mancini's typology are combined with criteria focusing on trust in the media and its development; and current Ukrainian media system is categorised according to Hallin and Mancini's original typology.

COVID-19 pandemic in selected Ukrainian media

Master's Thesis COVID-19 pandemic in selected Ukrainian media gives an overview of the Ukrainian media system with a focus on media ownership and its outcome in the end publications. By choosing three different types of ownership: privately owned media, pro- governmental media and opposition-owned media, we took a look at how the media published articles about COVID-19 at the very beginning of the pandemic. The methodological basis of this work was framing research, which is meant to uncover trends and the ways in which information about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is presented through the analysis of headlines in the chosen online media sources. The results of the framing research revealed that the frames are indeed present in the materials of the chosen media sources at the beginning of the pandemic. The representation of the frames was discovered to be different from the initial assumptions. The main discoveries revealed how privately owned media are more prone to fearmongering and hope frames, while the politically connected media were statistically less prone to publish anything politically coloured. Media landscape in Spain

The diploma thesis "The media landscape in Spain" aims to describe the contemporary Spanish media scene and apply the basic characteristics and particularities of the "polarized pluralist model" media system which was described by Hallin and Mancini in their book Comparing Media Systems and whose features are also allocated to other South European countries (Italy, Portugal, Greece and marginally also France) in addition to Spain. The description of the press and audiovisual media market itself is preceded by three extensive chapters dealing with press media development in Spain from its beginnings in the 17th century until today, media legislation and the concentration of media ownership. It was the development of the press (and, in the 20th century, the development of audiovisual media) which, due to its exceptionally close ties to politics, determined the shape of the contemporary Spanish media landscape, which is why the thesis focuses primarily on this topic. The historical and political development of the country and constantly changing systems of government led to frequent changes in law (press laws in particular), which makes Spain very different from other European countries in this aspect. An Analysis of the media environment of Hong Kong in 2005-2010

The subject of this master thesis is the current development of the Hong Kong's news media in the period of 2005-2010 which is scrutinized through the prism of recent political and social changes of the region. The main object of this master thesis is to create a descriptive analysis of Hong Kong's mass media in the abovementioned period. This master thesis splits into three parts. First part is theoretical and examines the key media theories dealing with the concept of media systems. Furthermore, it uses the media theories to identify the Hong Kong's media system and embed it into the appropriate theoretical context. The second part presents the historical development of Hong Kong's press system and names Hong Kong's main newspapers of the last century. Third part, the main part of this master thesis, scrutinizes the development of the Hong Kong's media system after the political transition from the British to the Chinese "rule". Here, the main attention is paid to the current newspapers, broadcast stations and to the new trends in the Hong Kong's media environment. Finally, this master thesis evaluates whether the political pressure from China affects the Hong Kong's freedom of press and whether local journalists use methods of the self-censorship.

Greek Media System

This master's thesis deals with the Greek media system and its specifics, describes the media landscape of Greece and its transformation influenced by the economic crisis. The theoretical part is devoted to the definition of the media system and to the description of the development of its research with special focus on the publication Four theories of the press written by Fred Siebert, Theodor Peterson and Wilbur Schram and the Comparing Media Systems written by Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini. In the practical part, the historical development of the Greek media market is described, followed by a description of the contemporary media landscape of Greece. The thesis focuses on print media, radio broadcasting, television broadcasting and digital media including social networks. The ownership structures of the Greek media are also characterized. The master's thesis also deals with the legislative framework of Greek media and self-regulation principles. In the thesis the impact of the economic crisis on the Greek media market is analyzed and the future development of the Greek media is aniticipated. Czech EU Presidency seen through the eyes of the member and non-member country: Semioticanalysis of the czech and swiss printed media in the period of the Czech EU Presideney

The master thesis "Czech presidency through the eyes of the member and non- member country" considers with the confrontation of articles from the time period of the EU-Czech Presidency which were published in the Czech newspaper Hospodarske noviny a in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. The work concerns with that point how both newspapers constructed the reality of the Czech Republic during its EU-Presidency. The analysis will proceed through the framing method and semiotic analysis. From the framing analysis will result the quantitative data and in the semiotic analysis is included the critical discoursive analysis. The CDA will be discussed in the thesis. Media shows to the audience the secondary reality and they have impact to that what the people think about and what attitude they contain to which event. At this process participates the language. In the master thesis we would like to prove that the Swiss media Show another reality than the Czech one.

The framework of a journalist's profession in Mexiko - professionalism, ethics and safety

This thesis is focused on chosen attributes of a journalist profession in Mexico related to the topics of ethics, professionalism and security. This thesis considers various aspects that affect performance of this profession, such as current political and economic situation in the country or historical context. It also concentrates on a basic description of normative environment of Mexican media system. This thesis analyses regulations of Mexican journalism done by the state, also a degree of political parallelism, a situation of self-regulation of journalism and a status of journalists within the editorial office and the Mexican society. Furthermore, this study takes into account specific challenges of Mexico. Namely, problems of drug trafficking, high level of corruption and clientelism, which cause high crime not only among journalists but the whole society. These aspects are discussed in the presented study. Regarding the above- mentioned challenges in the country, the thesis also focuses on security and seeks reasons for limited security of Mexican journalists. The practical part presents views of Mexican journalists on the profession of journalism in Mexico. Since journalism is perceived as a mirror of society, this study also provides insights into Mexican society as such.

Comparison of Liberal and Democratic Corporatist Media Models in 2018

The bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the media systems of Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Sweden, following the work of Hallin and Mancini's Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics. Using the example of these four countries, it tries to find out whether there is still a clear boundary between media systems in Liberal and Democratic Corporatist countries, or whether media systems converge towards the Liberal model as Hallin and Mancini predicted. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an analytical part. The theoretical part introduces the term "media system" and also several different typologies of media systems with special emphasis on Hallin and Mancini's typology. The analytical part compares national media systems according to four parameters: the structure of media markets, the degree of political parallelism, professionalization of journalism and the role of the state - each of these parameters is described in a separate chapter. The work uses data from recent research, publications and articles and compares them with data from the original Hallin and Mancini's publication.
