Willingness to pay for ski passes in Slovakia
Bakošová, Diana ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Šťastná, Lenka (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the willingness to pay for ski passes of consumers in Slovakia. Ordinal logistic regression is utilized on data collected by a self-developed online questionnaire. The dependent variable, Resort, rep- resents four resort types categorized from the least to the most expensive. The length of a usual ski resort visit in days, the length of the slopes in km, the difficulty of the slopes, the resort's locality, and the option to buy ski passes online were shown to have a positive effect and be statistically significant in the final model. The presence of a ski lift for kids in the resort and the ability to arrive at a resort by car in less than an hour were shown to be statistically significant with a negative effect. The only statistically significant demographic variable was shown to be the consumers' income in thousands of euros with a positive effect. Estimating willingness to pay for increasing probability to conceive
Kolářová, Natálie ; Ščasný, Milan (advisor) ; Šťastná, Lenka (referee)
The purpose of the thesis is to analyze preferences for increasing the probability of conceiving. Willingness to pay for increasing the probability of conceiving is estimated using the private good scenario and a new complex of vitamins and minerals as the contingent product. Specifically, we use the discrete choice experiment with three attributes: the increase in the probability of conceiving, the number of months of trying to conceive from when this probability will be increased, and the cost to be paid for this product. Data are obtained through a stated preference survey conducted in 2014 in four European countries (the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Netherlands). We estimate a mixed logit model, allowing for unobserved preference heterogeneity. We find that people are willing to pay to increase a female's probability of conceiving, and their willingness to pay is higher after 12 months of trying to conceive when one is becoming infertile. Respondents are willing to pay for increasing the chance to conceive even during the period when they are not diagnosed as infertile, i.e., from 6 months of trying to conceive, except in the Netherlands. Italians are willing to pay the most, while Dutch are willing to pay the least. By controlling for the main characteristics of...
Willingness to pay for e-books in the Czech Republic
Tomášková, Lenka ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Votápková, Jana (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explain willingness to pay for electronic books in the Czech Republic. Data were collected via online questionnaire. Using the logit model, following variables were identified to have significant influence on probability of buying an e-book. These variables are ownership of an e-book, online shopping, membership in the library, buying printed books, physical appearance of book and thinking about e-books as electronic documents which should be for free. Moreover, in case of printed book's price equals 270 CZK, respondents are willing to pay 132 CZK in average for an electronic version of the same title. Estimation of Bank Runs probability in the context of Deposit Insurance implementation in Russia
Dănilă, Ecaterina ; Horváth, Roman (advisor) ; Janda, Karel (referee)
This thesis empirically investigates the bank runs probability cases over the period 2005-2011 on Russian banking market and, simultaneously, tests the hypothesis of influence of bank-fundamental factors and macroeconomic conditions on the decision of depositors to withdraw their funds from banks. Methodologically, was conducted a logit econometric model to test our assumptions. We find evidence on both bank- fundamentals, such as high debt ratio, rising real interest rates, small asset size, and macroeconomic conditions, such as high inflation, and sharp increases in the real exchange rates, to influence on bank runs. In addition, the thesis analyzes the significance of deposit insurance implementation in avoiding bank runs. Moreover, we compare if the newly adopted deposit insurance diminished the credibility of the depositors in the state-controlled banks compared with private banks, thus, increasing the amount of investments to private banks. Finally, based on our approach, the method identifies a run on Russian deposit market during quarter four of 2008 year; however we would not characterize it as a severe run because it did not touch all banks but more as a partial one (approx. 1/3 of banks from the system were affected).
Determinants of the Demand for Tax Haven Operations: Empirical Evidence from the Czech Republic
Burianová, Markéta ; Janský, Petr (advisor) ; Švarcová, Natálie (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the firm-specific determinants of the demand for tax haven operations by Czech firms. Our objective is to better understand the firms' incentives for tax haven use, and furthermore whether there exists cross-haven heterogeneity in those incentives. The thesis examines the firms' tax haven investment behaviour by analysing firm-level data for 15,530 Czech firms for year 2013. To the extent of our knowledge, this has been the first research of its kind devoted to Czech firms. The evidence suggests that larger, more profitable firms with larger international presence are most likely to use tax havens. The analysis also indicates that higher firm indebtedness is associated with greater likelihood of establishing tax haven operations. This would suggest Czech firms engage in profit shifting through the use of debt financing. Furthermore, service firms were found to be more likely to use tax havens than manufacturing firms. This contrasts with previous research where R&D intensity was a leading indicator of tax haven use. Additionally, we found significant cross-haven heterogeneity in the determinants, particularly in the sector-specific characteristics. In our sample, service firms favoured Cyprus and the Netherlands, while manufacturing firms preferred Luxembourg...
Limited and censored explained variables
Kostka, Rudolf ; Bejda, Přemysl (advisor) ; Komárek, Arnošt (referee)
In this thesis at first we focus on theory of dealing with limited and censored explained variables. We begin with discrete variables and show the theory of binary and categorical variables. Later we explain utility of models logit and probit and demonstrate it at a practical example. We also provide a comparison of these two models. Third chapter deals with limited explained variables, specifically censored, truncated and variables representing some time to event. In the last chapter we describe some functions, which might be used to plot a graph of a survival function using softwares R or Mathematica. Some options in Excel are also mentioned, but they are very limited. Described functions are then demonstrated in use at a practical example with our gained data. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The influence of watching videogame streams on purchase decisions of gamers and their willingness to pay, evidence from the Czech Republic
Mertová, Veronika ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Kukačka, Jiří (referee)
This thesis aims to understand the relationshipbetween viewership of video game streams and purchase decisions players make. Furthermore, the price they are willing to pay is explored. The emphasis is on understandingthe difference in these effects for big blockbuster games and small independentlydevelopedtitles. The data was collectedusingan online survey distributed in gaming-focusedgroups on social media. The data on purchase decisions was analysedusing a logit model. It showed that trust in streamer's recommendations increases the chance of purchase along with the number of preferred genres and games bought for indie titles. Moreover,it showed a positive relationshipbetweenbeing a student and purchasinga big game after watching. A standard ordinary least squares model was used to analyze the price and showed that hardcore gamers, people who buy on release day, and people with a wider range of interest in games tend to pay more. On the other hand, older people, students, and people who prefer to buy games on sale are willing to pay less. Srovnání modifikací predikčních bankrotních modelů
Bednář, Ondřej
The goal of this theses is to compare existing bankruptcy prediction models with its new modification unique for this work, which could perform better than its competition. Proposed model is logit-based and consists of the combination of variables used in Altman´s and Ohlson´s models. The final model is estimated for medium sized companies in EU which aren´t publicly traded. This model achieved prediction accuracy of 97,1% (97.4% for healthy and 91.1% for bankrupt compa-nies) on its original dataset. As expected, when verified on new dataset, the accu-racy dropped but still reaches 97.1% (99.3% for healthy and 37.7% for bankrupt companies). The model is compared with its competition (original and modified version of Ohlson´s and partially Altman´s models) and it is shown that it has higher prediction accuracy.
Meta-analýza studií asymetrické transmise cen ropy u palivové produktové vertikály benzínu a nafty
Kostruchová, Klára
Kostruchová Klára. Meta-analysis of asymmetric transmission oil prices studies in the fuel product verticals of petrol and diesel. Bachelor thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2018. The topic of this thesis is the meta-analysis of asymmetric price transmission between the price of oil and the prices of other petroleum products, also known as "rockets & feathers". The empirical analysis is based on binomial and multinomial logit classification models to evaluate the empirical evidence of the oil price asymmetry. In both cases, approximately 75 % of the values were correctly classified. An important finding is that significant regressions include methodological variables, namely frequency observation and estimates made on panel data. In general, studies with higher expected rates (ie panel studies and higher frequency studies) have less frequent asymmetric transmissions. In the case of fundamental variables, there is no significant evidence of their classification capability of the presence of asymmetry of price transmission.
Willingness to pay for streaming services: Evidence from the Czech Republic
Strnadová, Ivana ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Kučera, Adam (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the consumers' willingness to pay for subscription- based video streaming services in the Czech Republic. With the unique data collected via self-developed questionnaire both the willingness to pay and the maximum price that consumers would be willing to pay for such services is examined. Using the logistic regression, variables that have a significant effect on the probability of subscribing were identified. These include the age, education level, preference for original sound and Czech movie production, online payments, purchase of an electronic movie, number of devices used, cinema visits, favouritism of movies over TV shows, satisfaction with the content offered by common broadcasting stations and desire for spatial mobility when accessing video content. Similar results were obtained when predicting the price using OLS. Additionally a previous purchase of a physical medium and the income level were found significant. Based on demand estimation this thesis also suggests that from the provider's perspective the optimal profit maximization price for streaming services should be set in the range from 218 to 283 CZK.
