The effect of activity - inactivity on human cognitive function
Mandlík, Kryštof ; Bitnar, Petr (advisor) ; Kučerová, Klára (referee)
This thesis adresses the effect of physical activity on human cognitive functions. It is based on the already proven fact that movement and physical activity have positive effect on human ascending reticular activating system. The experiment was conducted in two groups of different age. As a control group we used students not engaging in any activity. As a form of physical activity we chose brisk walk. The effect on cognitive function was based on direct measuring of memory in a form of recall test and on phonologic test of verbal fluence. Standardized questioners like Montreal cognitive test or MMSE weren't found apropriate because they are intended for use in case of impaired cognitive function. The aim of this thesis was to bring further findings on this topic. We were unable to confirm a statistically significant positive effect of physical activity on human cognition.
Level of physical activity in cognitively superior elderly women
Valtová, Nela ; Daďová, Klára (advisor) ; Křivánková, Markéta (referee)
Title: Level of physical activity in cognitively superior elderly women Objectives: The aim of the thesis is to describe the level of physical activity (PA) in cognitively superior senior women and compare it with the PA level of women of the same age. Another aim is to investigate the relationships between PA, anthropometric parameters and cognitive functions in this group of elderly women. Methods: A total of 90 women older than 80 years (mean age 83.4±3.3 years) who declared regular PA in middle age were included in the cross-sectional survey. The testing had the form of an interview with the collection of many anamnestic data, a questionnaire survey and measurement of the waist circumference. The method of determining the current level of PA was the IPAQ-E questionnaire. The MMSE, RAVLT, BNT-2, TMT and VF tests were used to assess cognitive functions. Results: Women over the age of 80 spend an average of 5.03 ± 2.3 h/day sitting, 181 ± 127.5 min/day walking, 167.4 ± 97.8 min/day moderate PA (on 5 days a week), 48 ± 84.4 minutes/day of high PA (on 1 day per week) and their average energy expenditure is 8560.2 MET minutes per week. Based on the evaluation of cognitive functions, it was shown that 33% of women with the status of cognitive SuperAging (SA) are in the research group. According to the...

Zbořilová, Darina ; Šteffl, Michal (advisor) ; Hráský, Pavel (referee)
Title: Association between alcohol use and semantic verbal fluency in older adults over 65 years of age Objectives: To determine the association between alcohol consumption and one of the memory components - semantic verbal fluency in older adults over 65 years. Methods: This diploma thesis was carried out as the secondary analysis of data from an international cross-sectional study, which was a part of the Survey of Health Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) project. For the purposes of this thesis, the participants were divided into six categories according to their education levels, and sex. Generalized linear models were calculated for each of the categories separately. Results: A total of 41,224 participants average age 75.1 ± 7.4 years were included in the survey, out of them 22,737 were women and 18,487 were men. 83.0% of participants reported no consumption any alcohol during the last three months prior to testing. More frequent alcohol consumption was associated with lower performance in the semantic verbal fluency test in the several categories according to education (p<0.001). This relationship was primarily among participants with less education, the unstandardized regression coefficient B = -1.416 (p = 0.045) was estimated in women who consumed alcohol five or six days a week and...

DIPLOMA THESIS ABSTRACT Name, surname: Bc. Lenka Freislebenová Thesis supervisor: MUDr. Bc. Petra Sládková, Ph.D. Title: Specific aspect occupational therapy in patients who survived holocaust Abstract: While practicing the profession of occupational therapist, we can meet clients who survived the Holocaust in any medical or social facility. The main goal of this diploma thesis was to create a proposal for an occupational therapy program for Jewish seniors who survived the Holocaust, emphasizing the elements of reminiscence therapy. One of the sub-goals of this thesis was to write 5 recommendations, which are specific for these patients. The second sub- goal was to find out the subjective point of view of the clients, the collection of biographies carried out as part of occupational therapy using a short questionnaire individually compiled for this diploma thesis. The design of the occupational therapy program was created based on the collected biographies of 2 clients of the Hagibor Social Care Home. These biographies were then used to create individual care plans for these 2 clients. Key words: Holocaust, holocaust survivors, reminiscence therapy, reminiscence, biography, cognitive function, occupational therapy, life review therapy
Support of Cognitive Skills of Seniors of in Residental Care Homes
Kňavová, Kristýna ; Felcmanová, Lenka (advisor) ; Šiška, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of supporting the activation of cognitive abilities in the elderly. The work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part focuses on the definition of the aging process of an individual with an emphasis on changes in cognitive functions and the possibility of supporting their stimulation. In the practical part, the results of qualitative research are presented, in which data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with workers and clients of four homes for the elderly and supported by deliberate observation of the activation of cognitive functions. The main goal is to gain an overview of the content and forms of activation activities with a focus on cognitive functions in the selected devices. The goal is also to obtain an overview of the frequency, differentiation and effectiveness of the above-mentioned activation activities in the selected facilities and to create a general recommendation for facility staff with the intention of improving or supplementing the portfolio of provided activities. KEYWORDS 1. Age and aging, cognitive function, impairment of cognitive functions, development of cognitive functions, Dementia, institutional care
Neuropsychiatric and cognitive aspects of early stages of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders in late-life
Matušková, Veronika ; Vyhnálek, Martin (advisor) ; Kopeček, Miloslav (referee) ; Mitterová, Kristína (referee)
Neuropsychiatric and cognitive aspects of early stages of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders in late-life Abstract The early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is currently focused on the stages preceding the dementia syndrome, i.e. the preclinical stage and the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage. However, the detection of AD using specific biomarkers of beta amyloid and tau protein is limited in clinical practice and often costly or invasive. Therefore, the detection of early clinical signs of AD continues to be invaluable. The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the early diagnosis of AD by examining specific cognitive markers as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), which have so far received little research and clinical attention. The first study introduces criteria for what is termed mild behavioral impairment (MBI), a syndrome analogous to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) describing new-onset and persistent NPS in older adults, and maps MBI symptoms across the cognitive spectrum with the Mild Behavioral Impairment Checklist (MBI-C), translated and adapted in this study. The second study shows that the severity of MBI-C symptoms, particularly impulse dyscontrol and decreased motivation in non-demented older adults, is associated with lower volume or thickness of...

Cognitive training as a part of physiotherapy for patiens after stroke.
ZACHAŘOVÁ, Judita
The topic of my bachelor thesis is "Cognitive training as a part of physiotherapy for patiens after stroke". Stroke is a serious neurological disease, that is characterized by high percentages of invalidity and also mortality. It is caused by a vascular disorder and it is characterized by specific symptoms. A big part of population suffer from this disease and it is also common among the younger ones. The main goal of this thesis was to describe the problem of stroke and also the problem of its influence on cognitive functions. Another goal was to suggest, implement and evaluate physiotherapeutic procedures with elements of cognitive training used in selected patients. The theoretical part contains a description of stroke problems with its manifestations, impacts and treatment possibilities of this disease. Subsequently the possibilities of individual cognitive functions, cognitive deficit, treatment, cognitive training and rehabilitation together with motor-cognitive training and testing are described. The practical part was made by qualitative research, which was performed on three patients after stroke with cognitive deficit, who were hospitalized at the Rehabilitation Department of Hospital České Budějovice a.s. The research included kinesiological and neurological analysis and testing of cognitive functions. According to obtained results an individual short-term and long-term rehabilitation plan was made for the patients. Physiotherapy with elements of cognitive training lasted for two weeks at the department. The therapy was successful for all patients and showed an improvement in motor functions in affected limbs and in walking stereotype. Cognitive functions also showed an improvement according to the results of the Mini-Mental State Examination.
