Photojournalism after Digitalization: State of Photojournalism in the Czech Republic
Lábová, Sandra ; Silverio, Robert (advisor) ; Nilsson, Maria Elisabeth (referee) ; Allan, Stuart (referee)
This dissertation undertakes ethnographic research to examine photojournalism in the Czech Republic comprehensively. It builds on the importance of news images in the media representation of reality while considering the authenticity of photography. It stresses photojournalists' role in gatekeeping decision-making and discusses the challenges they face in the evolving media market and developing technology. The research employs qualitative and quantitative methods to examine four dimensions of current photojournalist practice in the Czech Republic: professional identity, production process, ethical standards, and working conditions in light of rising competition. Key findings show passionate and dedicated professionals facing challenges in digitalization and limited resources. Respondents prioritize authenticity and autonomy but highlight the concerns about the underrepresentation of photo departments and the impact of competition in photojournalism. Nevertheless, they express high job satisfaction, viewing their profession as prestigious and rewarding. This research sets a foundation for future longitudinal studies of Czech photojournalists by providing arguments for several concerns, such as gender disparity, technological advancements, and audience perception of visual narratives.

Therefore, the newsroom is never empty. Demanding everyday working hours have built a certain routine in numerous reporters. Those, who work here for many years, even suggest feelings of "burn out". The presented work is an empirical study offering an insight into the providing of addictology care in the everyday practice. In a selected Organization, I ethnographically examine how the good addictology practice is done and what, according to the participants, makes it good. That means how the Organization comes to what is good and what is not, when and in which situation is it good. Through analyses of Organization's everyday life taking place in various facilities helping people at risk of dependents and their loved ones, through documents analyses and through the way the Organization presents itself, I offer proved a support for the good practice. These are the organization's spirit, that is cultivated from the long-term care for the organization's culture and also an awareness of the constant formation of one's own path towards good and even better care. However, neither the path nor the spirit has the same face and final form. Although it stands on solid foundations, which are the organizational values (respect, openness, responsibility, relationship and cooperation) and is based on a long history and traditions, it is shaped by what every day brings to the Organization. Despite its functional support, the Organization is not free from mistakes, errors. However, it seeks to ensure that its...

Kambo and its many faces
Civišová, Dagmar ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Heřmanová, Marie (referee)
This dissertation applies anthropology analysis to study a specie of a tree frog, living in the northern Amazonia, called Kambo. The wax-like substance, which the frog releases upon irritation, is used for its healing potential around the world. A basic conceptual framework is used to analyse the frog from the perspective of modernity, globalisation, and diffusion of cultural dimensions. The dissertation anticipates their influences on multiple parties. The geographical scope of the dissertation is limited on Amazonia and the Czech Republic. Kambo is a host of numerous biochemical interactions; in addition, it is used in socio-material context; in rituals; for gaining, or circulation of experience; or it is part of various techniques of understanding oneself, as described in later works of Michel Foucault. Due to Kambo's alleged participation on creation of human's subjective thinking, the dissertation answers the question on the extent to which Kambo could be responsible, through ethnographic lens. The results show that for those respondents who were experienced Kambo users; using the substance as a potion for treating physiological and mental issues and who were subsequently influenced by New Age movement; Kambo stands as a milestone in their life trajectories. Through the ethnographic research,...
Back to the future. Etnographic research of Local Exchange Trading System in Toulouse
Lédlová, Eva ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Kala, Lukáš (referee)
The present diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS). Using the method of ethnographic research, the author sought a holistic description during her six-month participation in a LETS group in Toulouse. Drawing upon theoretical literature, she discusses the local forms of exchange, debt, the relationship to money and to the virtual currency. The findings show that such a system can change the perception of debt and the relation to money. The most common reasons for involvement are the need to establish social contacts, while the most pressing problem appears to be the lack of interest of young people in this phenomenon. Keywords LETS, ethnographic research, exchange, gift, debt, individualization, Toulouse
