Nováková, Denisa ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
On August 21 2013 a massive chemical attack took place in Syria. On the basis of the attack the British Prime Minister convened parliament and asked the House of Commons for the approval of a military intervention in Syria. The government motion was however disapproved by 285:272 votes and therefore the possible military intervention and the further voting on this issue was blocked. Right after the vote a series of possible causes and consequences occurred. This bachelor thesis "Interpretations of a negative result of the British parliament vote on military intervention in Syria" tries to systematically analyze possible causes and identify the main factors, which contributed to the negative result. Then it tries to justify why Britain as a country with long history of humanitarian intervention refused to intervene in a country where one of the greatest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century takes place. Moreover when a military intervention in Libya took place under the current government. At the same time the bachelor thesis puts an emphasis on the character of the Syrian conflict, British political discourse in the context of a military intervention and experience with foreign-political interventions. Then it also analyses the allocation of seats in the British parliament, current state in a...

Projekt Bakalářské práce Jméno : Tereza Pískačová Email : 81359738@fsv.cuni.cz Semestr : Letní Akademický rok : 2020/2021 Název Práce : Komparace britské Konzervativní strany Občanské demokratické strany v letech 2005 až 2016 Předpokládaný termín dokončení : Letní semestr, 2020/2021 Vedoucí bakalářské práce : PhDr. Josef Mlejnek PhD. Cílem práce bude porovnat programy obou konzervativních stran a to především v oblasti environmentální politiky, sociální politiky a ochraně tradičních...
British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries
Fričová, Kateřina ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis named British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries is concerned with an impact of the revolutionary events of 2011, known as the Arab Spring, on bilateral cooperation between United Kingdom on one side and Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman on the other. While using quantitative analysis approach, it depicts how the Persian Gulf developments were reflected by prominent British representatives and members of the Cameron coalition government. Since the government promised to approach foreign policy matters through a liberal-conservative lens and also planned to further deepen its relations with Persian Gulf countries, the Arab Spring events can be interpreted as a clear dilemma for British policymakers. This thesis aims to answer whether such dilemma forced the government officials to re-asses the traditionally warm attitudes towards Persian Gulf and additionally, it demonstrates which spheres of their cooperation were threatened the most. Firstly, the bilateral relations between United Kingdom and Persian Gulf countries between 1971 and 2010 are described. Then, the focus moves towards the Cameron coalition government and its foreign- policy aims. In its final part, the thesis focuses on British...
Transformation of the British-American "Special Relationship". Since the Government of John Major until Theresa May
Kochová, Nicole ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The aim of the master thesis is to deal with the specific bond between the USA and the Great Britain - by Winston Churchill defined as a special relationship - which connects the both countries based on their common history, language and culture or on their common threat. The special bond then further leads and helps to close cooperation and support in between the USA and the Great Britain. The era the thesis is concerned with begins at the very end of the Cold War when the common enemy was defeated and it was claimed that the special relationship is supposed to vanish as well. It then ends with the term of David Cameron who was later succeeded by Theresa May. The work further focuses on the three significant British premiers - John Major, Tony Blair and David Cameron and the description of their attitude to the relationship with European Union and more importantly to the USA, as the references about the special relationship appear further in their speeches. The subject of my analysis are the speeches of individual statesmen and the fact how exactly they perceive the Great Britain in the international system. Whether the Great Britain should accept its role in the European Union or rather deepen its bond with the USA on the contrary.
Attitudes to the UK membership in the European Union (1993-2016)
Vavrušková, Barbora ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The aim of master's thesis "Attitudes to the UK membership in the European Union (1993- 2016)" is to analyse the individual theoretical and political attitudes towards the UK membership in the European Union. In particular, the thesis focuses on the period after the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty in 1993, during the governments of Conservative Prime Minister John Major (1990-1997), Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair (1997-2005) and Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron (2010-2016), who called a referendum on "Brexit" in 2016. Since the beginning of its membership in the EU, the United Kingdom has been more inclined towards an intergovernmental approach and worried about the delegation of power to supranational authorities as well as federalist tendencies. Due to the large number of approaches and theories related to the European integration, the thesis will focus in detail on federalism theory, to which the United Kingdom has always strongly defined itself, contrary to the model of multilevel governance that characterizes the current political system in Britain. In the past, the British political system was based on the so-called Westminster model, however, since the 1980s it has gradually transformed into a model of multilevel governance. The core of the thesis is to classify the relations...

Firstly, this thesis provides theoretical facts including the historical context, a description of a political situation in the UK and Scottish culture or a definition media background in Scotland. The author assumes referring of authors of opinion articles about Brexit was crucially influenced by the perception of "Scottishness", which defines Scots from their British neighbours, most importantly Englishmen. The goal of the thesis is not to discover, how many articles were published but what were the most often mentioned topics, what Scottish authors regarded as important and how did they face the idea of Scottish independence in connection with the results of the Brexit referendum.
A "Special Relationship"? the Anglo-American Relationship in the Age of Barack Obama and David Cameron
Nováková, Michaela ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
The term "special relationship" was for the first time in public used by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in his Fulton speech in 1946. His belief was based on the assumption that both countries were culturally similar and had cooperated in the Second World War. The cultural similarity and common purpose have been the presumption of mutual cooperation right from the beginning of the Cold War. Personal ties and Anglo-Saxon roots played also played a key role in defining the relationship as undoubtedly special. Such examples are JFK and Harold MacMillan, Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, and the subservient policy of Tony Blair towards G. W. Bush. The last mentioned is also used for partial comparisons throughout the thesis. The thesis called A "Special Relationship?" the Anglo- American Relationship in the Age of Barack Obama and David Cameron deals with the question whether the so-called special relationship is still special. By setting Obama-Cameron relationship into historical context, it offers a comparison between peaks, troughs, and average- level Anglo-American relationships. This leads to a conclusion providing specific factors of the Anglo-American special relationship. Those factors stem from the historical perspective and are then used in the main-body analysis of five...
