Aristology - Food as a Cultural Phenomenon

The diploma thesis focuses on the fundamental moments in the development of food, especially on the interpretation of significant differences in the understanding of food, both throughout our history and at present. The work tries to approach that food from a one historical moment is not only a neccesary part of human life, but it serves as a means of a certain cultural and social act and interferes with the social conditions of each person. In specific chapters, which are arranged according to the gradual emergence of period, the importance of food in society is described, as well as the expansion of gastronomy, as a science of cooking, but also the consumption of food or the development of dining and related tools. In the research of the postmodern period, the origin of which is limited to 1989 in the Czech context because of socialism, the work approaches the issue of consumer culture and hyperconsumer society. It also looks at two somewhat different aspects, the first one from the perspective of sociology as a science of society, the second one from the perspective of anthropology as a science of human. In addition to the traditional research, the work is based on a reflection of socio-cultural theories, such as Claude Lévi Strauss, Norbert Elias, Pierre Bourdieu or Roland Barthes, who more or less touch on the concept of food in their scientific interpretations. Part of the work is also the introduction of a not very well-known scientific discipline - aristology, which deals with all the above-described views, as a general science of food, so this thesis may be called aristological work.

Soundscape of Prague Psychedelic Guitar Rock Scene

Since its beginnings in the 1960s, psychedelic rock music and "psychedelic sound" sound has become an integral part of rock and Western popular music. This scope of this PhD thesis covers the performance of psychedelic rock music in Prague, Czech Republic, i.e. Prague's psychedelic soundscape (Shelemay 2006). The structure of the thesis is loosely inspired by the scapes concepts as defined by Arjun Appadurai (1996). First, it summarizes the development of the "psychedelic sound" and employs ethnographic research in order to elucidate what this sound means to its agents within the studied soundscape. Subsequently, it proceeds to discover who the agents of this scene are, how the roles of the performers and the audience blend together, how the agents understand their music within the multi-genre context of the scene, and what the phenomenon of psychedelic rock music means to the agents - both in terms of its sonic elements and the "ritual" (Turner 1969) aspect of live performances, often associated with the use of mind-altering substances. The aim of the thesis is to describe the psychedelic soundscape of Prague as a large organic network based on reciprocal friendship and support, rather than as a mere set of music groups that refer to themselves or are referred to as psychedelic. A comparison of selected anthropological theories in view of their pragmatic value

The study deals with the problem of applicability of two anthropological theories, structural functionalism and interpretive anthropology of Clifford Geertz. By applicability is meant what concrete difference using of one or the other theory brings about in ethnography. Each of the theories is at first thoroughly examined with emphasis on its possible aims, assumptions, and consequences for an ethnographer. Then each theory is put to test in examination of one particular ethnography associated with the theory. Evans-Pritchard's The Nuer serves as an instance of structural functionalism. Clifford Geertz's Negara as an example of interpretative analysis. Structural functionalism is shown to provide an ethnographer with a much more definite guidance which contributes to better possibilities of verification and comparability of the results than interpretive anthropology. Apart from the main subject, the study is concerned with more general questions, especially related to non-existence of a paradigm in anthropology and some of its causes.

Paleo Diet

Topic: Paleo Diet Objectives: The aim of bachelor thesis is to study available literature about Paleo Diet and evaluated it. Then determine whether there is awareness of Paleo Diet in Czech republic. In addition, find out whether there is any experience in dieting according to Paleo Diet and whether Paleo Diet coul be applied in our environment. Methods: As a source of information served a survey. The research group consists of respondents who should have any experience in dieting according to Paleo Diet. The results are presented by using frequency tables and charts using the functions in Excel or data analysis at www.survio.cz. Results: Some people in Czech republic have experience in dieting according to Paleo Diet and i tis positively evaluated. This was find out because of knowlegde from literature and information got from survey. Also physical aktivity has a important role and place in life style according to Paleo Diet. The applicability of Paleo Diet should not be a problém in our environment, all food stuff is available. Though Paleo Diet is not without controversy. Title of the thesis: Provence mirrored in its legends Keywords: legend, myth, tradition, folklore, Provence, anthropology Abstract: The subject of the bachelor's thesis is the French region Alpes-Côte-d'Azur and its legends.The first part is focused on the region itself from several aspects. There is the geographical location, the climate and the typical products of the said region. Furthermore, a part of the thesis consists of the history of the region spreading from the antiquity until the middle ages. A very significant part is that of the language environment of Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur. The legends, which are sorted into the historical development of the region, are then individually analyzed.

The human dignity topic in the writings of Pope John-Paul II.

The thesis named: "The human dignity in the writings of Pope John-Paul II." tries to give a general overview of the theological-anthropological viewpoints of the teaching of the Pope John Paul II concerning the protection of the dignity of human being. The thesis begins by touching the life stages of the Polish priest, bishop and cardinal Karol Wojtyla and later the pontificate of the pope John Paul II. The thesis looks on particular events which had made an impact on his personality orienting his whole being to the protection of human rights and dignity of every human being. The second part of the thesis looks at particular theological- anthropological aspects and statements which make up the corner stones of John Paul II's teaching. The third part then goes on to focus on certain impulses given by the signs of the times and serious topics which lead the pope to raise his voice to call for protection of human rights and dignity of every single human being.

Phylogenetic assesment of cultural characters

Phylogenetic methods have been used for analysing cultural characters extensively in the last ten years. This bachelor thesis starts with a brief overview and characteristics of the methods used for these analyses and then it deals with all three main fields where these methods have been applied. The first one of them is the analysis of manuscripts and their relations which is unique in that even non-cladistic methods bring usually good results. The second field discussed in this thesis is the anthropological characters, including both artefacts of material culture and various features of social orders. The last one deals with the analysis of languages and language families. In all the chapters, different approaches to different data are listed and the most important studies are described in detail. The thesis also attempts to find negative and positive sides of different approaches.

Social bodies within queer enterprise

The thesis strives for the anthropological interpretation of the body within queer enterprise. It tries to capture, interpret and understand the processes that form human bodies in this enterprise, in this thesis called Osvěžovna. Osvěžovna can be considered a certain social field within the queer habit is manifested; and as it truned out some sort of "friendly" habit too. With regard to the research landscape and research questions, the main research method is qualitative - participant observation. The main theoretical concept is the division of the cultural dimension of the human body into three structural levels according to Soukup and Balcer. This structure affects the division of thesis itself, which gradually deals with the techniques of the use of the human body and the ways in which the human body in Osvěžovna is modified; the way the human body is disciplined there; and what cultural significance can be found in Osvěžovna. This division is supplemented by the level of consumption. In conclusion are these findings summarized and there is also confirmation that these structural levels of the human body are very often intertwined. That points the integrity of the body culture system in Osvěžovna. Key words body; queer; anthropology; discipline; habitus
