Sartre and His Perception by Czech Intellectuals in 1960s
Molodkina, Irina ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee) ; Emler, David (referee)
The relationships between the power blocs during the Cold war have been researched by scholars. The question of the influence of Western ideas and representatives on the political thought in Czechoslovakia is still discussed. Although major differences were happening due to the work of institutions, their functioning was not possible without specific personalities. The aim of this thesis is to show how Jean-Paul Sartre and his arrival to Prague in 1960s did influence Czech intellectuals. The issue is approached by the review of the biography of the French philosopher, highlighting crucial events that linked him more with the Czechoslovak society, and then analyzing the way the Czech intellectuals reacted to his ideas and statements. Sartre was chosen as an intellectual who was uniting both, the East and the West, and went through a change of views, after the occurrence of several international events with the direct intervention of the USSR. Realistic views of the Czech representatives are facing relatively optimistic ideas of Sartre on the reformation of the Marxist ideology and preservation of it as the ruling one.

Kačerová, Eliška ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Lukešová, Anna (referee)
Shortly after the end of communist regime, four Czech high schools opened French classes. These so-called bilingual sections could have been founded thanks to resumption of Czech-French relation after they were silent for more than 50 years. Support of this special school programme reflected the intensity of bilateral cooperation in the field of culture and education. However, in the present day it can be observed that bilingual French sections do not receive same amount of support and interest. In addition, their condition is not equivalent to state of their founding. This bachelor thesis focuses on the evolution of these sections and aims to analyse, which are the crucial changes from the beginning 1990 to this day that made an impact on them. The introductory of this paper presents the historical context. First chapter is dedicated to transformation that took place in France. In particularly it focuses on new approach to cultural diplomacy, that caused decline in interest for Czech Republic, and revaluation of amount of investment that goes to bilateral educational cooperation. Second chapter works with transformations that occurred in Czech Republic on several levels. First it refers to the change in society regarding French language but also French education system. Sováková, Veronika ; Hnilica, Jiří (advisor) ; Pokorný, Jiří (referee)
v anglickém jazyce The present thesis deals with the life and activities of Hanuš Jelínek (1878-1944), one of the most prominent figures of the Czech-French relations of the first half of the 20th century. Based upon studies of archive documents, press and literature, its aim is to explain his activities namely during the period of the First Republic which has not been much reflected in the literature so far. This is mainly due to the fact that the primary source on Hanuš Jelínek - his memoirs called Zahučaly lesy ("Forrest Murmurs") end in 1919. The thesis is divided into three bigger parts. The first one recapitulates Jelínek's youth, formation of his personality and political views and last but not least the birth of his Francophilia. The second, pivotal part, places emphasis on his effort to get himself established in the nascent Czechoslovak diplomatic services. It analyses the eleven year period Jelínek spent at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as other activities stemming from his position there. The final part deals with Jelínek's cultural life and influences, however, it only gives a general overview necessary in order to understand Jelínek's personal life and has no ambition to review his extensive literary work. It accentuates, though, his work in Lumír journal that Jelínek...
France's Role in Forming the Czechoslovakian Elites (1900 - 1950)
Hnilica, Jiří ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Lenderová, Milena (referee) ; Ory, Pascal (referee)
This work seeks to answer questions concerning the role France played in shaping the Czechoslovak elite in the first half of the 20th century. The study rests on three basic pillars. The first is a study of the framework in which Franco-Czechoslovak relations developed in the area of culture, cultural and educational policy. The second pillar is the question of France's direct involvement in Czechoslovakia - by means of solid structures created in connection with the establishment of the new state, and with the development of active French cultural policy after 1918. On the one hand, the French Institute in Prague, which, in the period under study, wanted to be more than a mere cultural centre, its ambitions primarily concerning scientific cooperation (language, philosophy, history, law, medicine, economics, chemistry, technical disciplines). On the other hand, the French Real Grammar School in Prague, the example of which gives a very good study of the competitive limits of cooperation between the two countries in the field of secondary education. Despite the growing number of students, this private institution (nationalised in 1937), never stopped addressing a key question: is it a Czechoslovak school teaching in French or a French educational institution operating in Czechoslovakia? The third pillar is...
