Colonial thinking of Czech travellers at the juncture of teh 19th and 20th centuries

The subject of this diploma thesis is to look at the journalistic work of Czech travelers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through postcolonial theory, using the example of orientalist Alois Musil. It draws primarily on the psychoanalytic reflections of Frantz Fanon, the essays of Aimé Césaire, and Edward W. Said's conception of orientalism. The subject of the thesis is also to look at Czechoslovakia's "colonialism without colonies", especially through two theories: the non-colonial orientalism of Sara Lemmen and the colonial exceptionalism of Filip Herza. The intention of the thesis is also to mention the history of Czechoslovak colonialism, which forms the context of Musil's work, and to summarize research that focuses on the Czechoslovak image of colonies and the colonized. These serve, among other things, as a point of comparison with the results of the analysis of this thesis. The main aim of the thesis is to find out whether Alois Musil's journalistic work contains stereotypes of colonial thinking, or what specific stereotypes are involved. Going West: Czech Immigration to California (1960-1970)

The construction of human identity involves various aspects of self-definition, often involving an interplay between ethnic, national, and personal identities. In the case of emigrants, their self-concepts about their identities can undergo a profound transformation when they leave their home country. This oral history research project studies the experiences of emigration, arrival, integration, and identity among Czech immigrants in California who emigrated from Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. While contemporary research has centered primarily on Czechs in New York, Illinois, Nebraska, and Texas, where large Czech communities have historically existed, this study intends to fill a gap in our knowledge about Czechs who settled in California, of which less is known. Through oral history interviews with five narrators, this study examines their decisions to emigrate; their experiences of arrival and integration in California; their participation in the Czech community in California; and their perspectives on their identities before and after the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia in 1989. HIstorical arguments in politics: Interpretation of Slovak History between 1989-1992

This diploma thesis is a case study that is focused on application of the historical arguments in politics. This focus is closely oriented on the analysis of the interpretation concepts of Slovak national history in the period between November 1989 until the end of Czechoslovak federation in 1.1.1993. In the initial chapters, I primarily focus on the introduction into the issue of nationalism and national history. In the next chapter, I create a basic cleavage for Slovak national history and from that the derived typology for the concepts of the interpretation of national history. In the last chapter, I analyze the interpretation and its application by specific political actors in the above-mentioned period, which I try to add into the typology that was created in the previous chapter.

Between Global Ambitions and Economic Pragmatism: Czechoslovak Experts in Angola and Mozambique in the Cold War

In the mid-1970s, the Soviet Union and its allies, strengthened by the Helsinki Conference's success and the United States' international weakening after the defeat in Vietnam, launched a new global offensive. One of their priorities became cooperation with the newly established states in Sub- Saharan Africa - Angola and Mozambique. In addition to continued military support, the Eastern Bloc states invested in their industrialization, agriculture, and key infrastructure, which were supposed to contribute to the development of both states. In the case of Czechoslovakia, like other European socialist countries, sending experts to Angolan and Mozambican factories and other institutions became part of its foreign policy. By the end of the Cold War, several hundred Czechoslovak citizens had gained work experience in Angola and, later, Mozambique. The aim of the dissertation dealing with this key Czechoslovak foreign policy strategy in the broader Cold War context is to contribute to the current academic discussion on the forms of socialist globalization and the approach of the East to the Global South in the late Cold War. Cartoon humor in Dikobraz magazine from Velvet revolution to the Czechoslovakia dissolution

The purpose of the work is to analyze cartoon humor on the pages of the humorous and satirical magazine Dikobraz between November 1989 and December 1992. This period was a significant change in the political system for Czechoslovakia. The communist totalitarian regime was replaced by a democratic establishment. At the end of this period, there was a division into independent Czech and Slovak republics. For the purposes of the work, the professional literature devoted to the observed period, especially in the political sphere, was studied. Furthermore, 162 issues of the magazine Dikobraz were studied, or Nový Dikobraz. In the practical part, selected political and social events and their depiction with the help of cartoon humor are presented.

Czechoslovak newsreels from the perspective of social transformation (1989-1990)

This thesis deals with the end of film news in Czechoslovakia, which was realized in the form of film weekly newsreels until 1990. In the first part I define film news from the theoretical and terminological point of view and try to describe its specifics. I then explain its birth and the production of newsreel films on our country's territory, from its beginnings before the First World War until the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia and the establishment of democracy, which ended the continuous, state- subsidized and controlled production of regularly published weeklies. In the second, practical part, I use the method of qualitative content analysis to examine the form and thematic framework of the weekly newsreels produced in 1989, when a new concept of film reporting focused on the so-called magazines began to take effect, and in 1990, the year Czechoslovakia entered the democratic process. My aim is to find out what was the role of weekly newsreels as a means of socialist propaganda and a channel of social criticism in the first, revolutionary year and how they changed in the second, democratic year.
