The Effect of Local Policy on Local Parliamentary-Election Results
Vlčková, Kateřina ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Baxa, Jaromír (referee)
The thesis examines the relationship between the local policy and local parliamentary election results in Czech municipalities of extended scope from 1997 to 2013. We study the election cycle in subsidies and the impact of higher subsidies to the share of votes for the current ruling party. Besides, we analyse the effect of higher spending to the share of votes for the mayor's incumbent party in parliamentary elections. We test specific expenditure subgroups, such as transportation, education or leisure activities. We apply the system GMM to identify the election cycle in subsidies, while we use 2SLS and instrumental variables to test the effect of higher subsidies and higher spending prior to the elections. In general, municipalities obtain higher subsidies per capita in electoral years. If the mayor is affiliated with the current ruling party on the national level, the ruling party is rewarded for higher subsidies per capita in pre- electoral years by a higher share of votes in parliamentary elections. The mayor's incumbent party obtains a higher share of votes in parliamentary elections as well with higher capital expenditures on education and environmental protection in the pre-electoral year. Bc. Kateřina Vlčková ABSTRACT: Petya parent - "socialist" fatherhood in Mladý svět magazine at the end of the 70th and beginning of the 80s of the 20th century The topic of my thesis is fatherhood in socialist Czechoslovakia in the late 70s and 80s of the 20th century. My primary source research is a section Péťa Parent, published from 1979 to 1982 in the Mladý svět magazine. The theoretical part will focus on the concepts that are relevant to my research, such as the gender culture, fatherhood, masculinity, private and public sphere, motherhood, femininity, etc. Among the basic questions I'll ask include the following: How "socialist" father defends and publishes his paternal role, how he views care and education (his) child or what image of man-father Mladý svět magazine helps to create. With my work I try to contribute to a greater awareness of the history of fatherhood changes and involvement father in a family area, which was at that time primarily attributed to the women-mothers.
The Impact of Judicial Verdicts Regarding Patent Litigation on Stock Prices
Vlčková, Kateřina ; Novák, Jiří (advisor) ; Kvaček, Jan (referee)
This thesis examines the impact of judicial verdicts on patent holders' stock prices. Our dataset contains 40 companies which were involved in a legal dispute concerning patent infringement or patent invalidity and which were judged by the England and Wales High Court (patent court). This work states three main hypotheses which are examined within the empirical part. To understand the impact of a judgement on the stock price of the patent holder we used an event study which measures the impact of economic events on stock prices. We divided the main hypothesis into two parts. The first part examines whether the stock price increases in case of a trial victory and the second part tests whether the stock price decreases in case of a trial defeat. Our empirical analysis refused an alternative hypothesis and so the first part was confirmed. Nevertheless our results did not confirm the second part of the first hypothesis and the stock price shows the positive abnormal return even in case of a trial defeat. On the basic of these results we conclude that judgements influence the stock price in some specific cases but they are not a dominant factor. However we confirm the next hypothesis that the stock price reacts more sensitively to the judgement's announcement in a trial concerning patent invalidity than...

Vlčková, Kateřina ; Filipová, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Drozen, František (referee)
These days, companies and individuals often look for opportunities that will bring them lower liability of paying taxes. Every year, there is a higher number of companies interested in tax havens. By setting up an offshore company in one of the tax havens, it is possible to reach lower corporate income tax rates, as most of the tax havens provide international companies with lower or zero rates on income taxes. However, low income taxes are not the only indicator that should convince companies to establish themselves in these countries. It is important to take additional costs into account. The objective of this thesis is to provide a primary overview of tax havens, their purpose, specifics of their usage and to find out under which circumstances they can be beneficial. With the help of a fictional company established in the Czech Republic, calculations of tax liability in various havens will be presented. Measured countries are Luxembourg, Cyprus, British Virgin Islands, Seychelles and Bermuda. On the basis of final calculations, conditions suited for offshore company establishment will be suggested.
