Bats of the genus Plecotus in the fossil record of central and SE Europe.

In this thesis a review and detailed morphometric analysis of fossil material of genus Plecotus Geoffroy, 1818 (Microchiroptera) from central Europe from miocene till recent was done. Both metric and phenetic features of skull ant teeth were compared with recent european species of this genus. The most detailed attention was focused on fossil species Plecotus abeli Wettstein-Westersheim 1923, which is most likely only an extreme phenotypic variety of Plecotus auritus group. Fossil record from Karlukovo (Bulgaria) was studied too. The first record of Plecotus macrobullaris Kuzjakin, 1965 was found there.
Miocene-Pliocene age of cave Snežna Jama na Raduhi, Southern Alps, Slovenia

Snežna jama cave is 1,600 m long horizontal cave at about 1,500 m a.s.l. in Raduha Massif (Kamnik-Savinja Alps) rich in cave deposits (both allogenic sediments and massive flowstones). The cave size, shape and deposits show (1) formation of the cave in different conditions, and (2) its substantial age. A 4.8 m deep pit was excavated in allogenic sediments. Samples were taken both for palaeomagnetic analysis and palaeontological screening. Sediments consist of rhythmically arranged layers deposited in phreatic conditions. Fragments of rodent teeth and a well-preserved molar of genus Baranomys were identified. Fossil remains indicate mammalian zone MN 16 and MN 14. A high-resolution palaeomagnetic analysis revealed total of 3 principal normal polarized and 2 principal reverse polarized magnetozones. If we accept the palaeontologic calibration, the deposition took place within Gauss and Gilbert chrons, from about 2.6 to more than 5 Ma. Long sedimentation period is in concordance with the cave rocky relief that shows phreatic and epiphreatic morphology and predates the main uplift of the area for about 900 m.
Spatial activity and diet of Rousettus aegyptiacus in Cyprus: Does conservation of the only European fruit bat depend on supporting alien plants?

During the recent decade the Cypriot population of the Egyptian fruit bats, the only European megabat, dramatically decreased and active conservation management is urgently needed. However, quite a limited information is available on details of its life history and ecology. Our study focused on spatial activity and food habits of three nearby colonies of fruitbats in mid summer and late winter when food supply is supposed to be particularly limited. Using radio-tracking techniques (both manual and automatic), we investigated spatial activity and food habits of 43 fruitbats (summer: 8 females, 11 males; winter: 9 females, 15 males).
Okrouhlík. Excavation of Mesolithic settlement area in the Kamenice river canyon

This paper introduces a group of newly discovered Mesolithic rockshelter sites, clustered at the confluence of two rocky canyons in the sandstone region of North Bohemia, Czech Republic (Dolský Mlýn, Šamanská rokle, Prasečí převis, Ferdinandova soutěska, Kostelní rokle). The Okrouhlík rockshelter, representative of the Early Mesolithic stage, was excavated almost completely, demonstrating internal within-site patterning: a central hearth, system of surrounding kettle-shaped pits, and two large, stone-filled, marginally located hearths. Analyses of the environmental data, fauna, and raw material, typological and use-wear analyses of lithic artifacts are included.
