Teaching Visual Culture Through Semiosis: Transporting Postmodern Paradigms in Ars Education
Tipton, Tereza M. ; Fulková, Marie (advisor) ; Hernández, Fernando (referee) ; Tavin, Kevin (referee)
This research study demonstrates what happens when students and preteachers of art become aware of how they encode and decode visual experience in contemporary society, and how they relate these experiences to artistic practice. The study inquired into how pre-service teachers and high school students of art/education interpret visual culture and contemporary art when it is taught through a process of visual semiosis, involving dialogic inquiry, reflective writing, and art-making. Participants in the study were encouraged to become aware of and reveal their own thinking and learning processes by examining the nature of their perceptions, ideas, attitudes, and beliefs. Participatory Action Research (PAR) was conducted between 2005-2008 during four, semester-long seminars with an internationally mixed group of (15) under/graduate students of art/education at Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic and collected from two sessions with (13) Visual Culture students at the University of Western Bohemia, Plzeň, Czech Republic. Sessions included contemporary gallery exhibitions in Prague with critical theory texts, dialogic and written reflections, and art-making activities. Additional data was gathered with (108) Czech high school students at the Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague during the exhibition: Uncertain...

The Home Environment
Matoušková, Šárka ; Fulková, Marie (referee) ; Dvořák, Jaroslav (advisor)
Analýza pojmu " prostředí domova", "domov" a "prostředí" a jejich sémantické významy. Zkoumání osobních vztahů člověka k prostředí domova. Funkce symbolizace a procesy identifikace v prostředí.

The Puppet as a Created Artifact in the Context of Good and Evil
Přibylová, Barbora ; Ebelová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Fulková, Marie (referee)
My thesis is divided into 3 parts - theoretical, educational and practical part and author part. In theoretical section I am looking at the puppet as a methaphor and opportunity of (her) life (wake up the puppet). I am trying to find possibilities us to how the puppet can turn into a live person or wake up. I am looking at the problem of good and evil through a different point of view. The phenomenon of good and evil is reflecting into the educational and author part. At International School of Prague I did a puppet lesson with the theme of "Good and Evil". Students first created two puppets and then teamed up with a partner to write a fairytale script that went along with the puppets. In author section I am expressing the fenomen of good and evil. In doing this I used makeup as a tool. I painted my face in both good and evil ways and was photographed. I also went on the make masks and puppets of my own. During this process I documented my learning through written text, photography, and made a video in the form of a DVD.
Home as a Calling Card

The main purpose of this work is to find an answer for a question how can be visual art stimulated by music and what can be the result of such stimulation. In the theoretical part of my research I analyze correlations of rock music and visual art, which can be nowadays seen for example on CD booklets, in the visual production at a concert show and especially in the music videos. In the practical part I'd like to introduce the results of my own work under impression of music stimulation as well as the results of my pupils' works.
I - The Picture of a Woman
Vidrmanová, Hana ; Fulková, Marie (advisor) ; Slavík, Jan (referee)
/Thesis/ Prague 2005 - Charles University, Faculty of Education, Department of Art, p. 132 (visual materials: 17 scans of graphic diagrams based on Grounded Theory, 7 illustrations , 4 copies of students' art work.) The goal of the thesis was to analyse and describe the origins and sources of the gender identity constitution in the society with a view to a popular visual culture influence. The present media production was the starting point for the art educational project based on the gender stereotypes generated by media and the traditional description of male and female role stereotypes in the society. The main part of the thesis is the qualitative analysis of the project materials based on Grounded Theory procedures and techniques. Description of the analytic story, central cathegory and several selected main cathegories follow. The results of the qualitative analysis itself based on Grounded Theory, newly constructed theory describing the relations between central and main cathegories in the model of reality i.e. the field of research and other useful outcomes offer many possibilities of deeper analysis and further theoretical development of this theme. Key words: Gender stereotypes, gender identity, male and female social roles, visual culture, media, power, society, Grounded Theory.

I - Vision, Icon (representation). The transformation of identity in relation to visual culture. Analysis of an influence of the contemporary media production to a subject, an individual. Graduation Thesis is formed in two parts: theoretical and practical. These parts are not presented separate, because in practical part I tried to suggest and validate experimentally my own pedagogical project in conjunction with the theoretical part and it's content, where in the text those two parts support themselves.
