Religious development of Pilsen during the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938)
Vedral, Patrik ; Štemberk, Jan (referee) ; Šebek, Jaroslav (referee)
The main topic of the thesis is the religious development of Pilsen at the times of the First Republic (1918-1938), which is understood as the development of the Catholic Church, the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, the Czechoslovak Church and the Non-believers' Movement. The aim is to introduce individual religious entities, to show their mutual interaction and their ability to influence the surrounding society. The influence of religion is observed throughout the society, from the communal politics through the school education to the regional identity. This is all happening on the background of complex social processes (demographical, economic, cultural, political and social) that are properly taken into account. Another important topic of this work is the ability of religious organizations to respond adequately to the new challenges that emerge with these processes. The regional data identified are compared to similar urban areas and the rest of the country. Religious development in Pilsen should not only give evidence of the city itself, but also about the First Czechoslovak Republic as such. Ledererová, Eva ; Štemberk, Jan (advisor) ; Cviklová, Lucie (referee)
Women's National Council, Advocate for the Emancipation of Women Abstract This thesis examines the work of the Women's National Council, which operated between 1923 and 1942 and was the largest feminist organization in interwar Czechoslovakia. It shows how the Council functioned and what activities it focused on. The thesis also explores the Council's goals and how it achieved them. Its primary goal was gender equality, as stated in the Czechoslovak Constitution of 1920. The most effective way to bring this about was to understand the country's legal framework. To that end, the Council carefully examined existing laws and proposed amendments when those laws or passages within them were found to disadvantage or discriminate against women. The Council would then appeal to the legislature to consider its proposals and shape them into law. In this way, the Council changed some very significant laws, making their application more equitable. The Council was active in other areas, too. It held lectures, organized cultural events, and educated women. Founded by Františka Plamínková, a renowned feminist and advocate for suffrage whose life was forcibly taken during World War II, the Council would certainly not have had nearly such success without her. Miženko, Milan ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Štemberk, Jan (referee)
Thesis "Vítkov as a realm of memory of the Czech society in the nineteenth and the twentieth century" deals with questions of historic memory and opportunities of its study in a context of the Czech society. Thesis focuses on changes in perception of Vítkov hill as a "realm of memory" of the Czech society during the nineteenth and the twentieth century, specifically in the years from the end of the second half of the nineteenth century until present days. From early establishing czech society in Austrian empire, through the first Czechoslovak state, following communist regime to contemporary ages, every ideology left its traces on Vítkov hill. Every ideology perceived Vítkov hill in its ways and every ideology dealt with Vítkov hill in its own ways. Thesis aims to study a question of how did the perception of Vítkov hill changed during ages and which role did Vítkov play in the Czech society.
